Second time there - would go there again
Was there 14 years ago. It was good then and I think it has been updated this time around. Very nice and comfortable - within easy walking distance to the town, restaurants and shopping.

Royal Kona Resort
This hotel is older and isn't high end however it has a lot to offer - good location with lots of free parking close by, internet for a daily or weekly extra charge if you wish, off the main road making the location quieter than some, walking distance to lots of good restaurants and shopping as well as a salt water lagoon for swimming and snorkeling, a terrace and pool for relaxing. The only downside was that the hotel restaurant was expensive therefore we did not eat there. I would choose this hotel again.

Location and View are unbeatable
With an oceanfront location on Ali'i drive and a panoramic view of the ocean, coastline, and Kailua bay, you can't beat the Royal Kona. Restaurants and shopping are literally steps away from the hotel. Yes, the outdoor carpeting in the walkways has seen better days - who cares? The rooms are nice with a flat screen TV, comfortable beds, a table & chairs, a wet bar & fridge, and most importantly a large balcony. Its a great set up to relax and watch the sunset after a long day snorkeling and sightseeing!

In Hotel
There is phenominal snorkeling in front of the Bay Tower of the hotel. Ignore the signs - there are plenty of people swimming/snorkeling in the bay everyday. We saw turtles, eels, tons of fish and even a manta ray!

Great Place for a Three Star Hotel
My daughter and I had a great stay at the hotel even though we weren't there except to sleep. We have made many wonderful memories on the island before she leaves for the Army at the beginning of the year. Thanks to God and all His blessing He gave to us on the island and all the kind people He put in our path. Merry Christmas A Grateful Mom

Great Family Vacation
At first glance, really pretty exterior, and the location is awesome! Most of the staff were friendly, and so helpful! The extra fee for the full ocean view is what really made our trip! We didn't even mind the sounds from the luau, it was entertaining from our balcony! The pool is a little small, but their on site lagoon was awesome! I really enjoyed the snorkeling in a comfortable small setting with beautiful fish. Rooms are outdated, and they do not offer room service. Wifi fee is $10 per day, and parking is also $10 a day.

Unsatisfied exprience at Royal Kona Resort Hotel
I've booked this hotel 4 months in advance. I was placed in the room in the tower that faces the stage and the luau concerts are held every other day from 5pm till 8pm on this stage. The sounds of drums and music from the loud speakers was unbearable, it's impossible to have any rest even with all windows and balcony doors closed. I requested to change the room and had passive agressive attitude from the staff at the front desk. Finally, after insisting on changing the room, I was relocated to the room above the commercial air conditioner of their downstairs restaurant. Isn't it 'good care about their clients'? There were cockroaches in the room, the floor of the kitchenette and bathroom was dirty with the brown stains. There is no beach at this hotel, only tiny lagoon with the ice cold water as the hotel building actually blocks sun in the mornings. Please save your money and nerves, do not spoil your vacation, book some other hotel.

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Rent a car, drive to the Hapuna beach or better book the nearby hotel at this beach. It's only 25 minutes drive to the north from Kona airport but the beach and the ocean are gorgeous.

On the ocean!
The rooms were comfortable and had a nice view. The staff provided some misinformation at times. The lounge and grounds are lovely. The drinks from the bar- not so good. The price was good.
