Budget-friendly hotel overlooks Wailua Beach on the Royal Coconut Coast
Easy on the budget, Kauai Sands Hotel is garden-style lodging overlooking the ocean on the east shore of Kauai. There are not a lot of frills here, but basic vacation needs are nicely met in 173 comfortable rooms decked out in casual island-style decor with air conditioning. The 6-acre property has two pools and puts guests steps from user-friendly Wailua Beach, where activities include swimming, snorkeling, sunning, surfing and boogie boarding. The hotel does not have its own restaurant, but the many eateries of Coconut Marketplace are close by.Highlights
- Steps from Wailua Beach
- Two swimming pools
- Budget-friendly accommodations
- Walking distance to Coconut Marketplace
- Internet access (fee applies)
Location
A central east coast location makes Kauai Sands Hotel a fine base for easy exploring north to Hanalei Town, Princeville and the Na Pali Coast and south to Poipu Beach Resort. Even the rugged western shore, with spectacular Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, is a doable day trip.Rooms
All rooms at Kauai Sands Hotel can accommodate up to three adults or two adults and two children. Basic amenities include both air conditioning and ceiling fans, a small refrigerator, balcony and tub and shower. All rooms have wireless Internet access (fee applies). Kauai Sands Hotel does not have adjoining rooms or cribs available, but families with young children can request a rollaway bed (fee applies).Features
Kauai Sands Hotel is a good choice for vacationers on a budget and those who plan to spend most of their time out and about in gorgeous Kauai rather than in a hotel room. The hotel is only a couple of miles from Wailua Golf Course, well under a mile from tranquil Wailua River and just a short walk to the 60-plus shops and restaurants at Coconut Marketplace. A small in-room refrigerator allows guests to have snacks, juice and breakfast items on hand, making it even easier to keep a vacation budget in check. And although many island accommodations, even the most luxurious, do not have air conditioning, Kauai Sands Hotel does.Transportation

Move Next Door!
The location is perfect, right on the beach, but the hotel sadly is a dump. We spent 1 night there and then found a great room at Islander on the Beach, right next door. For a few bucks more, perfection. Our rental was through the owner at the Aloha Condo website and we booked an ocean view room on third floor. Great views, sounds of waves, amenities, coffee, free internet connection in the room. Great towels and gift knapsack that we used. We were in room 361 and we cannot believe that we did not know about this hotel. Have a real Hawaiian experience, book this room or another. So much better.

Pretty good for budget travel.
I upgraded my room to the room with the kitchen stuff and did not regret it, spent less in restaurants. Shops are close, but beaches around are no good, I went to Poipu every single day.

Its Kauai!
This is a hotel that needs love, but the location makes up for any of the long overdue decor updating. The beach out front is quiet and private. The rooms are clean, no frills. The hotel is midway between the north and south shore, so getting anywhere on the island was a breeze. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. A very good dollar value. I would stay there again in a heartbeat- had a fabulous time!!

Marriage and honeymoon in paradise
what can be said about the perfect get-away...the location is right on the beach (where we were married), staff were THE BEST, clean room and facility, location was perefect to visit everything on the island. the ONLY thing that would have made this hotel better would have been to have a restaraunt at the hotel (but places to eat were as close as a 5 minute walk next door) we will be back for anniversary celebrations !!!

Maybe changing soon.
The hotel was good enough for our needs. It is in the process of being sold and has not been kept up as well as could be. The staff was always available and helpful.

Great Location. For one or two nights it's great value. It's a vintage hotel (70's style), but very clean.

Tired
The staff was friendly and helpful...but the place is pretty tired and run down. No amenities. The snack bar area was severely lackiing. Would have appreciated a cup of coffee! The beach chairs were falling apart and dirty. The beach area covered in branches and leaves. I found myself going to the hotel next door to sit in their lobby to enjoy their gardens and ambience instead of staying at the Kauai Sands. Slept well and enjoyed the lower rate, but think they need a bit of a spruce up!

The Mermaid is a little mom & pop sidewalk cafe with yummy curry dishes. Reasonably priced too.

Would stay again...
Great location and really quiet at night. Short walks to great gift shopping, restaurants and grocery stores. The hotel's decor is 70's dated but I prefer the older places because I like the character. Friendly staff, good security, and lovely landscaping. The Sands is also run be Hawaiians. I avoid the corporate monsters. I will stay there again when I'm back on Kaua'i.

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
The Coconut Marketplace is an outdoor mall with shops, restaurants, entertainment and nice gardens. It's a two minute walk from the Kaua'i sands and a great place to get a morning coffee and write postcards.
