Budget-friendly hotel overlooks Wailua Beach on the Royal Coconut Coast
Easy on the budget, Kauai Sands Hotel is garden-style lodging overlooking the ocean on the east shore of Kauai. There are not a lot of frills here, but basic vacation needs are nicely met in 173 comfortable rooms decked out in casual island-style decor with air conditioning. The 6-acre property has two pools and puts guests steps from user-friendly Wailua Beach, where activities include swimming, snorkeling, sunning, surfing and boogie boarding. The hotel does not have its own restaurant, but the many eateries of Coconut Marketplace are close by.Highlights
- Steps from Wailua Beach
- Two swimming pools
- Budget-friendly accommodations
- Walking distance to Coconut Marketplace
- Internet access (fee applies)
Location
A central east coast location makes Kauai Sands Hotel a fine base for easy exploring north to Hanalei Town, Princeville and the Na Pali Coast and south to Poipu Beach Resort. Even the rugged western shore, with spectacular Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park, is a doable day trip.Rooms
All rooms at Kauai Sands Hotel can accommodate up to three adults or two adults and two children. Basic amenities include both air conditioning and ceiling fans, a small refrigerator, balcony and tub and shower. All rooms have wireless Internet access (fee applies). Kauai Sands Hotel does not have adjoining rooms or cribs available, but families with young children can request a rollaway bed (fee applies).Features
Kauai Sands Hotel is a good choice for vacationers on a budget and those who plan to spend most of their time out and about in gorgeous Kauai rather than in a hotel room. The hotel is only a couple of miles from Wailua Golf Course, well under a mile from tranquil Wailua River and just a short walk to the 60-plus shops and restaurants at Coconut Marketplace. A small in-room refrigerator allows guests to have snacks, juice and breakfast items on hand, making it even easier to keep a vacation budget in check. And although many island accommodations, even the most luxurious, do not have air conditioning, Kauai Sands Hotel does.Transportation

Hotel has access to the beach, and we seen a Monk Seal while we were there. Hotel has two pools and it is within walking distance to stores, shops, and restaurants at the Coconut Grove. Each room has a little deck with chairs and table. It is not fancy but adequate for short stay.

NOT worth the savings!
This Hotel is in the great town of Kapaa and on the beach but other than that I can't write any good reviews about this place. We felt like we were sucked back the the 50's in a bad way! They are doing the bare minimum to keep the place running probably in hopes for an investor to buy and renovate the entire place. My recommendation is pay a bit more for a lot better service, and accommodations. Please take my advice!

Cockroach Hotel
Let's start with the positive... the pool was clear and the sheets were clean. Other than that it is hard to speak kindly of the place. No, I take it back, housekeeping did a good job cleaning the room daily. The buildings either smelled like smoke or BO... take your pick. We picked the BO building and bought air freshener. The carpet made you feel dirty just walking across it. The Swamp cooler vibrated on the wall so loudly, we had to turn it off to hear the TV. Then the roaches... they were everywhere. My kids even like bugs and they were a little grossed out. But, I guess if you don't mind sharing your room with some cockroaches, buying your own air freshener, and spending very little time in the room, you might get away with a semi-positive experience. As for me and my family, we'll definitely spend an extra $20, and stay somewhere else.

Clean, cheap, right on the beach!
My husband & I Thought this hotel was perfect! Yes, it's outdated but it's a clean place to stay. My best friend got married on the beach right behind the hotel. The location is fabulous! The hotel restauraunt is closed but everything is near. From restaurants to grocery stores, souvenir shops n scuba rentals. We recommend going to Lydgate park!! Perfect place to snorkle n great for kids. It's just a little south on the highway.

Great price for a quick visit
While not the most glamorous hotel on the island, Kauai Sands Hotel is perfect if you plan on being out and about most of the time. Although the rooms themselves aren't picturesque, the beach front location more than makes up for it. My room did not have an iron or ironing board, the fridge wasn't plugged in, and the mattress could be much more comfortable.

Great location for the price
It was a nice place to stay and for the price I can't complain. The staff was very friendly and provided me with valuable information. I stayed in a standard room which faced the parking lot. It was really spacious and had a lot of walking room as suppose to other standard rooms I've stayed in. They no longer have an onsite restaurant which would've been nice, but within walking distance was the Coconut Marketplace which provided me with one of the best "chicken and fries" i've had by far. And at $6.75...great place!

Paradise
The hotel is right on the ocean. If you're looking for a room as fancy as your own home then u will be disappointed... but if you're looking for a nice hotel in paradise on the ocean that is clean and has great staff then this is your place. If you're looking for a nice cushy matress and elegant carpet and real fancy then this isn't your type of hotel. It's clean but just dated hotel.

Inexpensive, decent hotel
My girlfriend and I wanted an inexpensive hotel during our stay in Kauai. We figured that we would be gone all day exploring and would only need the room to sleep in. Why pay more for some fancy hotel when we're not even going to be there? The hotel is in a good location. It is about equal distance to the north or south sides of the islands. The farthest drive is to the west side of the island. There is nothing special about this hotel. The rooms do include air conditioners, fans, and small refrigerators. I saw several small cockroaches in our room over a course of nine nights. I either flushed them down the toilet or threw them outside. This might bother some people. The hotel is next to the coconut marketplace which has a bunch of stores and a few places to eat. There is even a nice nightclub there. The gas station by the hotel also seemed to have the cheapest gas on the island, though you may not need to fill your vehicle up much. There are also plenty of other restaurants within walking distance. All in all this hotel fit our budget, was in a good location, and suited are needs just fine. Oh, one thing to mention, they have rooms with either king size beds or two full size beds. My girlfriend and I got stuck with a room with two full size beds. We pushed the beds together but they were uneven. It would have been nice to have a king size bed.

A lot of hotel for this price
The lawns and pools were kept in good condition. A lot of empty rooms in this hotel. I easily upgraded to the ocean front room. The room was very spacious and sunny. But the refrigerator was too small, inconvenient and there was no appropriate desk in the room to have a meal. The window AC was extremely noisy in both rooms as glass was vibrating in the window and not powerful enough when it was hot outside. The room was infested with some very small ants, they were everywhere. They also need to improve the water pressure. The hotel is actually on the beach, but nobody cleans the beach and surf on the whole east coast was too high. We made daily trips to the south coast. I could recommend this hotel for the really tight budget only.
