Standard facilities, good staff
I had need of special accommodation, e.g., early registration, change in length of stay, room needs, etc., and the desk staff went above and beyond to work things out. Hotel was clean, room utilitarian.

The hotel is old and it looks old. They made no effort to renovate the rooms while the lobby looks nice and neat. The carpet, the beds, the furniture, the curtains are old and filthy. The bathroom is old with cracks in the tub. The balcony was really dirty. I think they haven't cleaned it for at least a year. In the bathroom there were only shampoo and body cream. We asked for some shower gel and they gave us the same stuff. They charge for wi-fi in all areas of the hotel for $10 per day. The charge for using the SAFE!!!! Yeap, they charge $5 per day to lock your valuables in your room. They have a business center and I thought I could be able to check in and print my boarding passes for my flight but in my surprise I couldn't because I had to pay $10 to get internet connection on their desktops.

Should not even be a 3 star hotel
The rooms had an awkward smell and beds were uncomfortable. We asked for a king and paid for an ocean view and received neither. We left our air conditing on and came back to the room with it being turned down! It took forever to cool the room back to a comfortable temperature. I should have paid several hundred dollars more and get a better room!

Mini vacation
My wife and two baby boys and I really needed a break from the grind. So even though we here on beautiful Oahu, last minute we decided to go to Waikiki for a couple nights. So I busted out my best inet searching. We didn't want a super cheap hotel, but we didn't want to pay 400 a night at the Hilton Hawaiian village. So I chose one that looked nice and clean in the 100 a night range. I saw your pics online and reserved with a very nice and professional lady. The whole thing took about 10 mins. When we got to the Hotel we were a little stressed.... Like only a 2 year and a one year old can create. But once we pulled up in valet....we were so happy for the treatment we recieved. That's what made it a relaxing time for me:) my wife really enjoyed it as well! Very nice location. Close to the beach for me and many shopping locations for her.... Thank you for making our little trip great! We will definately be back....

Cheaper doesn't mean better
The staff was very friendly and helpful especially when we asked to change rooms. Booking at this price(Least expensive 2 people, 2 double beds, no extras) means the 9th floor on the Diamond Head side which happens to be the side where all the trolleys and buses stop and across the street is a building with lots of glass to reflect the noises of trolley bells and buses. The ac didn't cover noise up but added to it because it was very loud and clunked every time it turned on. when a room became available on the other side, we went and it was much better. this hotel is really at THE gateway to Waikiki where 2 roads split off on both sides of the hotel and there is ALWAYS traffic so for the convience of being close to the action, there is a price to pay for a cheaper room. Ask for a room on the West (Honolulu side).

Money-saving tip:
In Hotel
Use the coupons in the flyers that are available all over and if you stay at Wakiki Gateway ask for a room on the West side. Also if you stay at the Aston Hotel because it is the opposite end of the bus/trolley lines ask for a room on the Diamond Head side(east).

...there are better places in Honolulu for the same price...
When I arrived there I was a little bit disappointed because they charged me almost the same price as in other hotels close by and they offered less. I had to pay extra for the WiFi and the room was a little bit old. Anyways the location is great and you can easily walk to the beach from there.

This is a nice hotel, with great staff, good Waikiki location
This is a nice hotel, with a great location for the price. It's located at the west end of Waikiki right where Kalakua and Kuhio come to a triangle shaped intersection. This is not an Internationally known 5 star hotel, nor are you paying the Internationally known 5 star price. I think that people who give this hotel a bad review are inexperienced travelers, unfamiliar with the relatively HIGH prices of Waikiki hotels and are making a comparison of the per night price based on their previous stay in Cleveland, OH (nothing against Cleveland) and the price they paid there . . . and they're sort of expecting that due to the per night price this will be an inetrnationally known 5 star hotel (folks you're in Waikiki and a fast food meal is ONE and ONE-HALF times the price you're used to paying on the mainland). Just to give you some basis for my Waikiki hotel experience - this is my 7th stay in Waikiki and I have stayed at (remember they don't let you use other brand names in these reviews) a nice chain hotel that starts with Hy, a nice chain hotel that starts with Shera, a boutique hotel that has since changed hands, an well known Hawaiian chain that starts with Outr and a to-remain-nameless, really. cheap hotel that I wouldn't stay at again. This trip we stayed a week at the Waikiki Gateway Hotel over the Christmas holiday which was part of a flight, hotel and rental car package we booked. We stayed with our 2 children, spent all of our days and evenings away from the hotel, exploring the sights and attractions, snorkeling, dining out and doing fun activities, we simply slept and showered at this hotel (this is NOT a resort hotel, where you go with the intention of never leaving the hotel for your entire vacation). Okay back to the hotel review. ALL the staff was nice and very accomodating. The front desk staff, the valet, the security and the maid staff were all pleasant and helpful. The rooms are average Waikiki sized rooms (meaning they're a bit small, as are most ALL rooms at most ALL Waikiki hotels - think slightly larger than most NYC Manhattan hotel rooms for a size comparison). The hotel furnishings are nice, with signs of wear, the bathrooms are clean with signs of wear. The pool is REALLY SMALL, they have ice and vending on ONE floor only (so it's an elevator trip to get ice), there's laundry facilities, but only 2 washers and 2 dryers. Additional Charges: Parking for hotels guests is $19/day with in and out privileges AND a roll away bed is an extra $30/night. FOR THE PRICE, this hotel gets an OVERALL 3.75 STARS (for a compairson the well known chain that starts with Hy in Waikiki FOR THE PRICE gets 3.75 STARS too, now obviously these are not anywhere near the same type of 3.75 STAR HOTELS, this is NOT an even rating scale - so maybe on an even rating scale this is a 2 star hotel if compared straight across against the Hy's 4 stars, but it's about 1/2 the price or less, so this is a price sensitive, STAR RATING). OVERALL, nice, clean hotel with nice staff, quick check-in, quick check-out, quick car valet service WOULD DEFINITELY STAY AGAIN !!!

Friendly staff though
Very very much traffic right outside the balcony. Never heard customers but the traffic was awful. No ocean view and no working ceiling lights. Bathtub was clogged up. If you're in Hawaii to party with friends this would work fine. To relax, chose something closer to the beach.
