Hotel Not that Great
The Hotel location is great, Parking is not. We hand to park two block down in the mall public parking. Hotel parking is very limited in the basement and if you get a spot your not going to be able to get out. Also the Cleanllness of the room was not very acceptable. When we arrived the fridge had leaked all over the floor and the room has a smell. After taking to the girl at the front desk we hand our room changed. The new room was better, we found mole growing in the shower area. Changing Hotel was not an option for us since we had the days planed out already, and doing so would take us one to two days to get another hotel. Bottom line is price and location is good, but nothing special.

Sightseeing tip:
Short walk from hotel
If you are visiting Honolulu, Hi and are staying near the Wakiki strip, there is no need for a car but for only 1 days I would say. All attactions and beaches, you are able to walk, take the bus or shuttle. Only reason I would say you need a car for 1 days is to go to the Pinapple pantation and explore north shore.

Great Option for this Price Range
When booking a 2-start hotel, you never know quite what you're going to get, but Castle Hokele surpassed what I expected from a 2-star hotel by far! The room was small, but it was clean and neat. The bathroom didn't have any signs of soap scum, mold or aging; there was always plenty of hot water for everyone to shower in the mornings. There was no evidence of bed bugs or other nasty critters. The sheets felt and looked clean. The flat screen TV in our room was an unexpected, but pleasant surprise. Parking is $20/night, which, when I asked about parking availability prior to booking, the staff member I talked to "conveniently" forgot to mention. The staff doesn't usually change out the bath towels except for every 4 days, but they were very accommodating when we asked for them to be changed out sooner. It's definitely not a quality, 4-star or a 5-star hotel, but if you're looking to stay in Waikiki for cheap, I'd definitely recommend Castle Hokele!

Not worth money
Tiny, very old, dingy, stayed one night. don't get rollaway bed, had to pay and it is in horrible condition. Hang out in front of entrance for some rough looking characters.

Charmingly funky
At first, it seems old, maybe shabby... We were there 9 nights and each day I liked it more. I love how the place is a bit tattered and solidly repaired. You feel absolutely safe. I love the thick wood furniture, the lanai, the kitchenette.... I love the pool. I love how sweet the staff is. I love how they have everything you want and are so charming. They gave directions, advice, charged half what the library did for copies and always had change for the bus. The laundry is open air. The gift shop is wholesale. (She is unbelievably sweet & patient, and sells to the Kalakaua shops.) The restaurant is geared toward the Asian tour groups that are the main customers. It's all you can eat, run by a grumpy / good natured couple who keep the vast bins full of fresh fruits, tasty fresh steamed cabbage, kim chee, corn, beans , meat & veg dishes, juke ... You can really get your nutrition cheap there! Plus, it is interesting and is as clean as an old place in Hawaii can be expected to be. I will stay there again and tell my friends.

"Brothel" next to Castle Hokele
Stayed at the Castle Hokele several times due to budget. Indeed, the property can use an update. But the so called "Brothel" next to the Hokele is NOT a brothel, but a Thai Restaurant and night club. The food at the restaurant is quite good and before you post things about a property, one should properly investigate their surroundings.

Never again!
Booked this hotel months in advance through a travel agent for a school volleyball tournament. Except for two of the girls' rooms, the other girls, chaperones or coach weren't even on the same floor. That wasn't safe, especially when the girls reported a man knocking on their door at 2 a.m. which the front desk said was housekeeping delivering toilet paper to the wrong room. The rooms smelled of urine which the director of housekeeping said was cleaning solution, they only change towels and bed linen every four days unless you request otherwise, carpet was dirty, old laminate countertop in kitchenette had been patched with something like wood putty, old bamboo dinette had been painted lime green and the paint was coming off as was the paint on the old cabinet handles. No closet doors, just a rod in a hallway between the living room and bathroom. Bathroom had old fixtures from about 1950 and tile grout had been painted over to try and hide mildew stains, which didn't work. Floor tile was dirty and tacky. Bed was old and lumpy. Sliding glass doors were of old bubble glass, couldn't see through them, and didn't close properly. You could see where they had used strips of aluminum to close the gaps. Wanted to open them to freshen the room but there were no screen doors to prevent the critters from coming in. There were cockroaches in a few rooms which the security guard, who finally came up an hour after we called, said came up to the rooms because of the restaurant downstairs. Drapes were stained. Parking was $20.00 per day and was cramped, tiny spots. Location would have been good except for the brothel next door which made it seedy after dark. Service was terrible. Had to ask housekeeping to clean my bathroom sink after two days and I ended up having to wash the dishes if I wanted clean ones. The pool was o.k. but as I was doing laundry I noticed two little girls getting into the pool by themselves, no adults nearby. They were about 3 and 7 years old. When I alerted the front desk, which is in plain view of the pool, they replied that they didn't worry about that because they aren't liable. I suggested they tell the girls they aren't allowed in the pool without a grown up, which they finally did. I couldn't believe it. When we arrived we were told that they stopped offering a free breakfast in 2012 even though it states that in a well know travel company's 2012 brochure. They told us to call another company to get breakfast vouchers but that company said they only give one free breakfast when you attend an orientation. Our team had to use money earmarked for other things on breakfast items when calls to our travel agent, the vacation planning company and hotel didn't work. Worst hotel stay ever.

We needed a place to stay after coming in to Honolulu late. Online the hotel looked good. However, the room smelled mildewy and parking was either on the street blocks from the hotel or $20 a day! We were really close to Waikiki but were glad it was only overnight instead of a longer stay

A old castle that is a great place to stay
This is a great place to sleep, as it is clean, and the staff is kind and courteous. The room is old and in need of minor maintenance. BUT what a great place to stay so I can spend my money on good places to eat and shop. Centrally located, nice pool, helpful staff. But do not use the restaurant, a waste of money there!! But they know this and they are under a long term lease, but you are in Waikiki and there are GREAT places to eat nearby.
