Riverfront hotel in Savannah’s historic district

Originally a storehouse for cotton during the 1800s--when Savannah's waterfront boasted a bustling cotton exchange--River Street Inn sits on a bluff overlooking the Savannah River. The inn comprises five floors wrapped around a central atrium. Throughout the property, antique furniture and period décor create an old-world ambiance with modern conveniences. The inn's central location at the north end of Savannah's historic district puts guests within easy walking distance to the bars and restaurants of River and Broughton Streets.

Highlights
  • Great location overlooking River Street and the Savannah River
  • Trolley tours of Savannah's historic district stop outside the hotel
  • Walking distance to many downtown bars, restaurants and attractions
Rooms

Southern ambiance permeates the inn's décor with antique and antebellum-style furnishings. Each room has its own personality, from hardwood floors and four-poster beds to plush carpeting and wrought-iron headboards. All 86 rooms overlook the Savannah River or downtown Savannah. Watch large ocean freighters ply the busy port river from French-style balconies found in some rooms.

Features

Built in 1817 out of ballast stones left by visiting ships, the first two floors of the inn make up a section of Factor's Walk--a network of narrow streets, alleys and bridges that supported one of the South's busiest cotton ports. Numerous restaurants, bars, shops and tour options surround the hotel. Visit Huey's Southern Café for low country favorites like shrimp, oysters and fried green tomatoes. Guests can buy tickets for trolley tours of the city or river cruises from the front desk. A complimentary evening guest reception with wine and hors d'oeuvres is held Monday to Saturday. A fitness center with professional-grade cardio equipment is located onsite.

Great!

The hotel is an old cotton exchange building, so if you like history, this is the place. The only reason it was noisy is that it's right on the river and there was a band playing right outside the hotel in the touristy river walk, but one expects a party down there. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. River Street Inn had nice remodeled bathrooms. It was a very pleasant stay.

River Street Inn

The parking was a bit unusual if you arrive later in the day. Easy to handle once you are aware you can double park in front of the inn until you get a pass. After this and the rooms may take a bit of getting used to, you don't just go to the 5th floor and get to any 5th fl. room. U may have to go to another elevator on the 4th fl to get to certain 5th floor rooms. Otherwise it was all very good.

In the Heart of Historic Savannah

My husband and I flew in from Kansas City and we stayed 5 days. We never needed to rent a car, everything was within walking distance and the River Street Inn was in the mecca of River St. which is the most hoppin' place in town, beautiful views from our room and we were Not on the River side and still had an awesome balcony. Some Tips: 1. If you plan on eating at Paula Deans, Lady & Sons, go on the Paula Dean Tour through Old Savannah Tours. You'll get to eat at her brother's place (Uncle Bubbas) and get a VIP pass for Lady & Sons, which is well worth not standing in line for half a day, just to get your name on a list.2. First day there, take an Old Savannah Tours - Historic Hop on & hop off Trolley ride. You'll learn alot and be able to "get your bearings" on what is where.3. All the Ghost tours are fascinating and fun, I don't suggest taking any "walking" tours though, because you'll be "pooped" from walking so much anyway, and Savannah can be a little "sketchy" after dark.4. Shrimp Factory on River Street was one of the best places to eat - average meal cost: $15 to $25 per person - but delicious!5. The Andrew Low House was my favorite house to tour, next would be the Mercer, then Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, then Davenport...all the houses are just amazing!!!6. Look for the FREE Ferry across the river, great for pictures. Usually boards off of River St., just to the east of the Hyatt.7. [*]8. As long as your beer or mixed drink is in a plastic cup, you can walk right out the door and down the street with it (can't be over 16 oz. though) - really cool.Overall we had a great time and my only complaint was the pillows were very flat at the River Street Inn, and each time I called the front desk for extras, they were out, but the bed was comfy and the room was amazing. It was a little noisy Thurs-Sat. Nights because of all the commotion on River St. when trying to sleep, but not horrible.

Charming and very quiet, not the commercialized hotel look. Added bonus was complimentary wine when we arrived. Breakfast in the hotel was amazing! Parking is off-site for $10.

Fantastic Historic Hotel

What a great place to stay, especialy if you're looking for a place full of history. Staff was friendly and helpful, rooms were comfortable and clean. Parking not great, but stayed across the street and an overnight stay only cost $12. Beats running to the meter. Would go back again for sure.

River Street Inn - Savannah

We toured Savannah for a few days. Loved the location of the hotel and its history. The staff was wonderful, only complaint is that the bed was rather uncomfortable as it was a super firm bed.

Definitely check out the restaurants below the inn, cruise down River Street to the Bohemian hotel and enjoy cocktails dinner on the rooftop bar. :)
