Affordable downtown San Jose hotel offers easy access to everything

Located in the heart of downtown San Jose, the Arena Hotel offers walkable access to the HP Pavilion, downtown offices and the San Jose Caltrain station. Guests appreciate the variety of nearby dining and transportation options whether they are there for a San Jose Sharks game or a business trip. Complimentary breakfast (daily) help guests fuel up for a long day of work or night of recreation, and Jacuzzi tubs in each room ease sore muscles afterward.

Highlights:
  • Free wireless Internet access in rooms and common areas
  • Complimentary continental breakfast
  • Walking distance to HP Pavilion, downtown San Jose and Caltrain
Rooms:

The recently renovated rooms have traditional decor, including dark-wood furnishings and printed bedspreads in dark, muted colors. Guestrooms and suites are highlighted by amenities such as 27-inch color TVs, voicemail-enabled telephones, microwaves, refrigerators, coffeemakers and even kitchenettes in some rooms. Two-person Jacuzzi bathtubs and free wireless Internet access are nice bonuses.

Features:

Corporate travelers appreciate the on-site business center, which is open daily and includes a computer workstation with Internet access and a printer. (A fax machine and photocopier are available at the front desk.) Guests who don't like checking bags can take advantage of the same-day dry-cleaning service and an on-site laundry room (fees apply). If you need the location you can not do better

This is an older nice hotel in a marginal transition area of town. If you need a place near the HP Center or near downtown you can not beat the price for the buck. The rooms are very large, with a coffee maker, fridge and Microwave. Rooms are older but well maintained and very clean but on the dark side. Excellent off street parking and quite rooms for sleeping with excellent air conditioning. Area is safe but empty at night except for a few homeless and bums. Excellent restaurants are within walking distance downtown (1/2 mile) and a CVS pharmacy within a few feet of the hotel. It is well lit for walking on the main streets but I would not stray to far from the main streets. Easy 5 minute walk to the train station. Breakfast was excellent but the same each day with eggs, sausage, potatoes, pancakes and french toast and the best biscuits and gravy I have had in years. Some fruit and yogurt, with hot drinks and juice.

The main downtown dining areas are withing walking distance, but it looks like the downtown is not doing well with a lot of closed restaurants.

Not too shabby

Most of the breakfasts were lousy (we were there 4 nights), the A/C & refrigerator leaked...a LOT, and the 3rd floor lobby area wreaked of cigarette smoke. However, there was a full sized refrigerator and microwave (we saved a ton on eating out), the room smelled fine, they listed on the TV which channels were what and CVS was right next door; not to mention the jacuzzi bathtub!!!

Decent for the price

The hotel had nice amenities: free parking, free wi-fi (with good speed), and complimentary breakfast, microwave/fridge in room. The hallways smelled heavily of smoke (although my particular room was a non-smoking). Also, it's pretty obvious that the hotel is on the older side; some small stains on the walls, shower door somewhat dirty... but it was fine for the price. The hotel service/housekeeping could probably do better to make things "shine" a little more.

Light sleepers beware

We used this as a place to spend the night in between a late birthday party and an early trip to Monterey. The lobby personnel were very friendly, and the lobby had a nice decor and was clean. However, if you're a light sleeper, the hotel sits near Hwy. 280 and a street that enters/exits Hwy. 280. We also heard an airplane at night and because the walls are so thin, various guests speaking very loudly in the hallway and letting their doors slam past 10 p.m. If you're a heavy sleeper, you may not mind, and if not, perhaps going to sleep with headphones/music or ear plugs may help.

There is a mall-area nearby with a cinema, and there is also the Elephant Bar, which in itself was nice with friendly servers.

Misleading

This hotel was chosen because it said free transportation to the airport. When we inquired of shuttle times, their reply was we don't offer transportation. When shown the web site with the "free transportation" he said it was a misprint & couldn't help us. Walls very thin, could hear neighbors talking.

Great Stay!

We had a great stay at the Arena Hotel. The gentleman at the front desk was very welcoming, friendly and answered our questions. The room was clean and the Jacuzzi tub was great!! The breakfast was good, with scrambled eggs, potatoes, pancakes, yogurt, cereal, several different choices of juice, the breakfast was better than other hotels "continental breakfast". Will definitely stay here again.

Not what we expected

Not what was promised! The ad said it was a 4 star hotel and I wouldn't even count it a 2 star!! The outside was nice enough, the room was "clean" however it was VERY dated and dingy. The Zacuzzi tub was nice and big but so was the ring around it, again I think it was "clean" just dated and dingy! It advertized an indoor swimming pool but it didn't have one, not even outside!!! If I were to go to that area again I would not be staying there! The entire hotel needed some major renovations!! I almost forgot the bathroom fan stayed on and made a horrible rumbling sound it would turn off but only for a few minutes then start back up rumbling again.

Nice Hotel

Good location. Close to downtown and 2-3 mins to the convention center by car. Nice price, given the quality of the hotel. A nice place to stay for business trips.

clean and quiet

I was there for a conference, and all other hotels near the site charge well above $100. This is the only one cost ~$80. Upon check in, I found the room was spacious, clean, and away from the street. The window was facing the yard, making the traffic noise almost unnoticeable.

my wife and I were in San Jose for a Prince concert. The hotel is only a 3 min walk to the arena. Didn't have to worry about parking and traffic.Only in town for one night.. The hotel was inexpensive and nice.
