If you need the location you can not do better

This is an older nice hotel in a marginal transition area of town. If you need a place near the HP Center or near downtown you can not beat the price for the buck. The rooms are very large, with a coffee maker, fridge and Microwave. Rooms are older but well maintained and very clean but on the dark side. Excellent off street parking and quite rooms for sleeping with excellent air conditioning. Area is safe but empty at night except for a few homeless and bums. Excellent restaurants are within walking distance downtown (1/2 mile) and a CVS pharmacy within a few feet of the hotel. It is well lit for walking on the main streets but I would not stray to far from the main streets. Easy 5 minute walk to the train station. Breakfast was excellent but the same each day with eggs, sausage, potatoes, pancakes and french toast and the best biscuits and gravy I have had in years. Some fruit and yogurt, with hot drinks and juice.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The main downtown dining areas are withing walking distance, but it looks like the downtown is not doing well with a lot of closed restaurants.

Good place

The hotel is very nice, very convenient and well located to a concert in hp pavilion and close to caltrain station. It also has a good internet and very relaxing jacuzzi. Breakfast is ok, but it could improve.

Good Value

The Arena Hotel is old but considering the age, was clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly and helpful. Amenities included hot buffet breakfast, small kitchen, free parking, wireless internet and morning newspapers. Pleasant 1.5 mile walk to convention center.

Best solution in San Jose

The Hotel is really nice, well furnished, and with the best price of the area. It beats the price of most motels with ten times more comfort. The location is nice, walking distance from SJ downtown. Perfect either for short or long stay. The room had 2 queen bed and a 2 persons jacuzzi! Price around 80$ per night. Breakfast included. Not the best breakfast ever but absolutely sufficient.

Worst Experience of a hotel stay

When we checked in at the hotel, the carpets looked like really old and needed some cleaning. After getting to the room, the AC did not work and we had to call in the maintenance to fix it. The rooms are so dimly lit. and suddenly in the morning the bathroom lights just wont turn on. The bed was so hard, We could barely get any sleep. The only upside to the room is the jacuzzi, but this hotel is just not worth the price. I will never stay here again.

Good value hotel!

Good value! Great breakfast variety, saves time & additional expense. Front desk staff very helpful! Only negative was that I think the room was previously a smoking room. Odor lingers but tolerable.

Not too shabby

Most of the breakfasts were lousy (we were there 4 nights), the A/C & refrigerator leaked...a LOT, and the 3rd floor lobby area wreaked of cigarette smoke. However, there was a full sized refrigerator and microwave (we saved a ton on eating out), the room smelled fine, they listed on the TV which channels were what and CVS was right next door; not to mention the jacuzzi bathtub!!!

Decent for the price

The hotel had nice amenities: free parking, free wi-fi (with good speed), and complimentary breakfast, microwave/fridge in room. The hallways smelled heavily of smoke (although my particular room was a non-smoking). Also, it's pretty obvious that the hotel is on the older side; some small stains on the walls, shower door somewhat dirty... but it was fine for the price. The hotel service/housekeeping could probably do better to make things "shine" a little more.

Light sleepers beware

We used this as a place to spend the night in between a late birthday party and an early trip to Monterey. The lobby personnel were very friendly, and the lobby had a nice decor and was clean. However, if you're a light sleeper, the hotel sits near Hwy. 280 and a street that enters/exits Hwy. 280. We also heard an airplane at night and because the walls are so thin, various guests speaking very loudly in the hallway and letting their doors slam past 10 p.m. If you're a heavy sleeper, you may not mind, and if not, perhaps going to sleep with headphones/music or ear plugs may help.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

There is a mall-area nearby with a cinema, and there is also the Elephant Bar, which in itself was nice with friendly servers.
