Modern boutique hotel with recording studio near Union Square

Quirky, modern and ultra-hip, The Mosser Hotel is the only lodging option in San Francisco with a state-of-the-art recording studio on premises. Rooms in this Union Square hotel are clean and efficient. All have platform beds, while some have private bathrooms and others share. Annabelle's Bar & Bistro, the on-site restaurant, utilizes organic ingredients sourced directly from area farms.

Highlights
  • State-of-the-art recording studio
  • On-site Annabelle's Bar & Bistro
  • Platform beds
  • Walking distance to shopping at Union Square and Westfield Centre mall
Rooms

"The Mosser," as it's known locally, has 166 rooms in all -- 112 deluxe rooms with private bathrooms and 54 "economical" rooms with shared hall baths for travelers on smaller budgets. Each room boasts platform beds and vanity sinks. Rooms also come standard with robes, ceiling fans, hair dryers and free Wi-Fi. Many rooms have windows that look out onto busy city streets; some even have reading nooks built into bay windows.

Features

Opened in 1913 as the Keystone Hotel, the historic property was completely redesigned in 2003 and now feels modern and chic.

The centerpiece of that redesign was Studio Paradiso, a state-of-the-art recording studio that is available to hotel guests. Other standard amenities include ironing boards, two-line telephones and custom-designed furniture.

In early 2010, the hotel announced a commitment to embrace eco-friendly products in all the rooms. The Mosser family donates a portion of all hotel proceeds to reforestation, literacy and educational projects.

Dining

For a fabulous cocktail or tasty sandwich, pull up a stool at Annabelle's Bar & Bistro, a French-style eatery located on the ground floor. The restaurant features an eclectic wine selection.

Fantastic convention location, but know what you're in for

I stayed at The Mosser in late January for a convention at Moscone. If you're in town for a convention, the location is perfect: Moscone West is just two short blocks south. The rooms are, as described, really quite small. I stayed in a shared queen, and the arrangement of the bed was quite ridiculous. It's quite easy to see that this room was not intended for a bed of this size. When you walk in, you see the headboard against the wall, a quite conventional thing. But you'll notice that the pillows/etc are placed on the side of the bed, for you're expected - and indeed, it's necessary - to sleep sideways on the bed, with the headboard to your side. Fortunately the beds are quite comfortable. Like some other reviewers have mentioned, the rooms get quite warm. The heaters do not turn off, and the window was stuck, so for the first few days my room became a hot, sweltering mess. Fortunately we eventually got the window opened and it was much more comfortable, at the expense of increased street noise. A word of warning if you're booking through here, however. When I checked in, the front desk did not understand that I had already (pre)paid for my room, through the site. The problem was quickly remedied via a call to support, where the operator contacted the hotel and informed them of the situation (I had to do this the next morning, as presumably the staff did not communicate this to the next shift). Just have the phone number ready so that you can have them clear up any problems.

Great little hotel, lots of clean quality personality.

I reserved a queen room with shared bathroom. You get a small room with wall mounted TV, coat closet(w/iron and board), queen bed with reading lamps, normal sized corner sink, Window to alley, and mirror hair dryer/toiletries. I paid $90 and felt like it was well worth it for the location and quality of the room. You share a Shower room, and a specific men's or women's room with 2 other queen rooms on your floor. The rest of the hotel is the normal bathroom in room style. The lobby is basic, but has free breakfast muffins and coffee from 6am-10am. It was well visited by lots of visitors that lounged for an hour or so while I worked on my computer, enjoying coffee. Lots of internationals and couples seemed to be the clients. Will definitely use again, I liked my cozy quiet room.

Simple, ample, lovely time

In town for a week of opera. Easy access to all transportation and a myriad of restaurants and shopping. Coffee and muffins each AM a nice extra. Free internet kiosk in the lobby. Shared bath not a problem. Excellent beds and linens. Very clean throughout. Staff tried 3 times to fix the TV which I finally diagnosed and got working. Very nice, helpful people. Would go back without question.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

While there are a great number of homeless in SF, they are by no means unique to this neighborhood and were never threatening or troublesome. Just sad.

Location, location, location!!!

This was my third time staying at this hotel and all 3 times I've been very pleased with my room. While the rooms are tiny and the "facilities" are down the hall, the rooms and the hotel in general are clean, well maintained, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. As a single traveler, I generally don't spend my vacation time sitting in my hotel room anyway so the size of the room isn't really an issue for me. I'm out and about and use my room just for sleeping. The Mosser Hotel is just around the corner from the front door of the Westfield Shopping Center and the F train which runs down Market St. all the way to Fisherman's Wharf. Two blocks to Union Square for more shopping and hopping on tour buses. Annabelle's Restaurant right next door is very good but is a bit pricey. But there are plenty of dining options all around Union Square. If sharing "facilities" is not your cup of tea, you can pay more for a room with your own bathroom. As long as you are aware ahead of time that the rooms are TINY !!!! that shouldn't be a problem. It's the only reason I rate my stay 4 stars instead of 5. The next time I'm in S.F.I will stay at the Mosser again. The price is worth it for me.

Unbeatable location for the price

The room was very small, but the location of the hotel was great. Considering the price, you can't find any hotel better than this one.
