Modern boutique hotel with recording studio near Union Square

Quirky, modern and ultra-hip, The Mosser Hotel is the only lodging option in San Francisco with a state-of-the-art recording studio on premises. Rooms in this Union Square hotel are clean and efficient. All have platform beds, while some have private bathrooms and others share. Annabelle's Bar & Bistro, the on-site restaurant, utilizes organic ingredients sourced directly from area farms.

Highlights
  • State-of-the-art recording studio
  • On-site Annabelle's Bar & Bistro
  • Platform beds
  • Walking distance to shopping at Union Square and Westfield Centre mall
Rooms

"The Mosser," as it's known locally, has 166 rooms in all -- 112 deluxe rooms with private bathrooms and 54 "economical" rooms with shared hall baths for travelers on smaller budgets. Each room boasts platform beds and vanity sinks. Rooms also come standard with robes, ceiling fans, hair dryers and free Wi-Fi. Many rooms have windows that look out onto busy city streets; some even have reading nooks built into bay windows.

Features

Opened in 1913 as the Keystone Hotel, the historic property was completely redesigned in 2003 and now feels modern and chic.

The centerpiece of that redesign was Studio Paradiso, a state-of-the-art recording studio that is available to hotel guests. Other standard amenities include ironing boards, two-line telephones and custom-designed furniture.

In early 2010, the hotel announced a commitment to embrace eco-friendly products in all the rooms. The Mosser family donates a portion of all hotel proceeds to reforestation, literacy and educational projects.

Dining

For a fabulous cocktail or tasty sandwich, pull up a stool at Annabelle's Bar & Bistro, a French-style eatery located on the ground floor. The restaurant features an eclectic wine selection.

Cozy budget-friendly accommodations in Downtown SF

I had a pleasant one-night stay in a "Shared Bathroom Queen" which is a clean, fairly modern-looking room with about 80% of the floorspace occupied by a comfortable queen bed. Also in the room: a sink (with the usual hotel toiletries included), a VIZIO flatscreen TV, chair, stool and small bedside stand (with alarm clock). This compact arrangement worked out well for me since I was just at the hotel to relax a little, then sleep after a busy day in San Francisco. The shared mens bathroom was a bit cramped; it had just enough space for a toilet and its usage, but for me, that wasn't a big deal. I didn't use the shared shower and can't comment on that. The hotel staff were very friendly, and the free morning coffee and muffins in the lobby were a nice way to start the day. The location is excellent as well; it's a short walk away from the Yerba Buena Gardens, the Powell BART station, Market Street, the Westfield Shopping Centre and many dining options. If you need more space and/or privacy, consider one of their other rooms which include a bathroom, but if you're looking for a nice, little place to rest after spending time in the city, the "Shared Bathroom Queen" is an affordable option for one (or two) budget-conscious traveler(s).

Mosser Hotel

It is amazing to me that a really well-run budget hotel like this exists in downtown San Fran. It is family-run and at least some of the profits go to environmental projects. It seemed very clean and well-run; the staff are really pleasant and attentive. One caveat - the rooms are small. Shared bath facilities (at least in the budget rooms there and there are private baths available) may not be to everyone's liking but it was really no problem at all. It's downtown so not in a scenic neighborhood. Great little hotel especially if you are in SF for a conference like I was or don't plan on spending a lot of time in the room.

Time in the City

A great location just steps away from Bart and 2 major theaters. My favorite restaurant Annabel's located next door. Loved the corner room but not the tiny sink. Will be back.

Pleasantly Surprised!

Needed a room for 2 guests, for Bay To Breakers. Was looking for something under $150.00 bucks and found The Mosser on one of the discount travel sites. BUT it was for one of the rooms with NO toilet or shower in it. I was apprehensive, but decided I would go for it. So GLAD that I did! The room was super duper small. It consisted of a Queen Bed up against the wall (with lots of pillows. that was a plus!) a sink with mirror, hair dryer, lots of towels (wash cloths, hand towels, bath towels, tooth paste, soap, shampoo and conditioner, etc.) a cute wire mesh basket ( that was great for holding my hair brush, tooth paste) a single white swivel chair, closet (with plenty of hangers, 2 bath robes, 2 extra pillows and enough storage for 2 suitcases, carry on bags and our purses and a folding luggage rack) , celing fan, window that opens (loved so you can let in the fresh cool breeze) and nice flat screen tv. Although the room was super small it started to grow on me and I really liked it! It was great for 1-2 night stay, but not much more than that. The room , restroom and showers were all extremely clean. That was a huge plus. Also the staff were all so friendly, helpful and kind. From the valet, to the front desk, to the housekeeping ladies. All were wonderful! One thing to be aware of that the walls are thin and you can hear when people are in the hallway or accessing the restroom, But that wasn't too big of a deal for me. The location of this hotel is perfect! You can easily walk to Union Square, Old Navy is on the corner, Mel's Diner and AMC Theaters are on the opposite corner, Mosconne Center is just 2-3 blocks away, access to Bart. I would definitely stay at The Mosser again and would recommend it to others.

Mel's Diner is just on the corner. They serve breakfast, lunch dinner and dessert. There is also a Subway if you are on a budget. Old Navy on the corner or you can catch a movie and new AMC movie complex, or walk to Union Square. Possibilites are endless! :)

My Downtown San Francisco Adventure

I arrived at about 10:00 p.m on a Saturday night. The city was brightly lit. As we rounded the corner off Market and onto 4th we came upon this cute brightly lit hotel. The lobby was inviting and so was the man who opened the door and the woman behind the desk. They welcomed the new arrivals and quickly checked us in. Apprehensively I took the elevators up the the top floor to see my shared shower. That was all I could think about after booking the hotel. What a pleasant surprise. It was spotless. I went to my room. It was small but very neat. I showered, walked down the aisle in my hotel-provided robe, tucked into bed and decided to love the European adventure I was about to have. I did and it was great. What a steal in the heart of San Francisco. Love it love it love. Would go back
