Modern boutique hotel with recording studio near Union Square

Quirky, modern and ultra-hip, The Mosser Hotel is the only lodging option in San Francisco with a state-of-the-art recording studio on premises. Rooms in this Union Square hotel are clean and efficient. All have platform beds, while some have private bathrooms and others share. Annabelle's Bar & Bistro, the on-site restaurant, utilizes organic ingredients sourced directly from area farms.

Highlights
  • State-of-the-art recording studio
  • On-site Annabelle's Bar & Bistro
  • Platform beds
  • Walking distance to shopping at Union Square and Westfield Centre mall
Rooms

"The Mosser," as it's known locally, has 166 rooms in all -- 112 deluxe rooms with private bathrooms and 54 "economical" rooms with shared hall baths for travelers on smaller budgets. Each room boasts platform beds and vanity sinks. Rooms also come standard with robes, ceiling fans, hair dryers and free Wi-Fi. Many rooms have windows that look out onto busy city streets; some even have reading nooks built into bay windows.

Features

Opened in 1913 as the Keystone Hotel, the historic property was completely redesigned in 2003 and now feels modern and chic.

The centerpiece of that redesign was Studio Paradiso, a state-of-the-art recording studio that is available to hotel guests. Other standard amenities include ironing boards, two-line telephones and custom-designed furniture.

In early 2010, the hotel announced a commitment to embrace eco-friendly products in all the rooms. The Mosser family donates a portion of all hotel proceeds to reforestation, literacy and educational projects.

Dining

For a fabulous cocktail or tasty sandwich, pull up a stool at Annabelle's Bar & Bistro, a French-style eatery located on the ground floor. The restaurant features an eclectic wine selection.

Small but nice

The rooms are very small. I didn't even have a table or dresser. If you are interested in historic, this is your place. Everything, and everyone, was very nice. Just not what I like when I'm travelling on business.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Right next to Mel's Diner, on Fourth, is a self-serve frozen yogurt place that was awesome! I didn't eat at Mel's this trip but LOVE it, too.

Great Hotel, Convenient Location!

Really nice hotel, especially for the price. The staff is nice and the front doorman is especially courteous. The rooms are small, though. And, be sure to ask them not to put your room next too the elevator or shower (unless you like hearing unpredictable noise at night and early morning).

Great boutique hotel at a low price

This is my second stay here. The rooms are small but smartly laid out. The shampoo, lotion, hair gel, etc... smell so good. The staff is so genuinely nice! I brought my 13 year old daughter with me this time and she liked it too. The shared bathrooms are clean and I've never had to wait.

Mosser Hotel Review

This is the second time I've stayed at the Mosser. I love this hotel. It's right downtown, in a good area, and the staff is very helpful. However, I do not believe that they wash the sheets between guests. My first night there I discovered a blood stain on my sheets. That was the only problem I had with the place.

Affluent Room Amenities

There were various room amenities such as soap, shampoo, razor, candy, perfume, toothpaste, breathe right, and more. Most of them are corporate advertisement purpose, but I don't care. Enjoy your stay!

Location is spectaular with a fabulous long boardwalk with the beach on one side and Pebble Beach Golf Club on the other. Rooms are small, but great socialising/reading/writing/contemplation areas dotted all over the centre. Hearty breakfast, helpful staff. Had a great stay and would recommend to all.

5 Star treatment at a two star price

My experience was a really good one!!!! Because this was my first time in San Francisco and staying in a boutique hotel, I was pleasantly surprised!!! My initial response to having such a small room was one of complete shock. I mean, i haven't had to share a community hall bathroom since I was a freshman in college 12 years ago!!! But the bathroom was immaculate!!! They even provided basic amenities, such as razors, toothpaste, shampoo, and bathrobes!!!! Besides the accommodations, the customer service was top-notch!!!! Our flight didn't leave til well past check out and the concierge was able to hold our luggage for us. He also helped us secure airport transportation, and even pointed us in the right direction for dining options!!!!! I will definitely book another reservation!!!!

Excellent bargain in a great location.

The Mosser is located off of 4th and market, which as it turned out was a great place to be! I was within 2 blocks of a variety of places as well as less than a block to both BART and bus stops. The hotel does have shared facilities but they were always clean and never felt like they were shared. The room was small, think of it more the size of a bedroom, with a queen size bed, a closet, sink, small television and nightstand. The restaurant and bar Annabelle's is attached to the hotel. I recommend stopping by for a quick drink or dinner before you continue with your night. The staff of The Mosser was outstanding. They were very efficient and happy to offer assistance. I will definitely return and this is now my first choice for a hotel in San Francisco

If you are driving in, there is a close 24 hour parking garage with good rates at the corner of 5th street and Mission. It's 1/2 block from The Mosser and very well lit.

Shared Bathrooms - So Worth It!

We were visiting San Francisco for 6 days/5 nights and our only affordable option to stay downtown was the Mosser's shared bathroom rooms. It was SOOO WORTH IT! The bathrooms were right across the small hall from us - we never ran into other guests. It was right off of Market Street which was the best street for us to be off of, because it gave us such easy access to everything. We were a minute walk away from Diners, Bars, Restaurants, Starbucks, Walgreens, parks and everything else under the sun - but most importantly - the F Street Car. During our whole stay we didn't have to use any other public transportation than the F. It took us to the Wharf and the mission directly and was really exciting to use since they resemble the old street cars from all over the world. This hotel also puts you about a two minute walk from the middle of beautiful Union Square and Union Square Park. We found that having the Mosser as our epicenter made it possible to walk to most places we wanted to go to. The staff was super friendly and inviting. The "continental breakfast" is just coffee and mini-muffins - so it would have been nice to have something else offered to make it more substantial, but the lobby is very cozy and I enjoyed my morning routine of getting coffee and a muffin and sitting next to the window to people-watch and check the weather. The rooms are VERY SMALL. It was perfect for what we needed - and honestly it has all the essentials so we really didn't miss anything. The sink area in the room was convenient so we didn't have to use the shared bathrooms for everything. The closet came stocked with robes, hangers, an iron and ironing board. The bed was super comfy, and there were some great samples given to us in their goody basket. Our room's window faced 4th street, which has the Marriott hotel right across with their concierge constantly tooting his train horn to hail cabs, and a parking garage that has an alarm that goes off to alert pedestrians that cars are exiting. Those sounds at night were very obnoxious to fall asleep to, especially when we wanted the windows open. The bathroom situation is a bit strange. The bathrooms are separate from the showers, so you have to go to the bathroom, then go to the shower. There's literally nothing in the shower room other than a full bathtub with shower head, a mirror and racks to hang your towel on. It would have been much more convenient to have them together, but I assume it makes it better in the long-run so if someone is taking a shower you aren't without a toilet. The bathroom is just a room with a toilet and a no-water-needed hand sanitizer dispenser. It would have been nice to have a sink in there as well so the hand sanitizer isn't all you have to clean your hands, but I just used that then washed my hands in my room. Make sure to utilize the concierge for tips on places to go and coupons - they were super helpful. There are practically no amenities at this hotel, which would have been nice. The only thing that was there and valuable was the free use of a computer, internet and printer, however there was only one computer so we occasionally had to wait for it. We really loved our hotel. The location, the ambiance, and the price made all the other shortcomings worth it. We would definitely stay again.

Money-saving tip: Long walk from hotel

If you are willing to walk you can get surprisingly far in San Francisco. Places can look very far on the map but are actually walking distance (depending on how much you like to). We walked all the way from Ghirardelli Square by the Wharf to Lombard Street, all the way down to China Town and back to our hotel without needing public transport or a cab. And it was a really cool beautiful walk to take.
