Boutique luxury with a free wine hour within minutes of Union Square

Occupying a beautifully restored 17-story Spanish revival building in the heart of San Francisco, the Serrano Hotel, is both fun and sophisticated. The decor displays a healthy dose of whimsy, as the lobby and rooms incorporate vibrant colors and exotic Spanish and Morrocan accents. The on-site restaurant, Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, serves upscale tavern-inspired fare in a hip and modern space. Serrano also offers wine hour every evening.

Highlights

  • - Union Square and Theater District offer unparalleled shopping and culture
  • - Upscale tavern-inspired fare at Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, the on-site eatery

Rooms

Oversized beds, high ceilings and colorful accents characterize just about all of the Serrano's 236 rooms, 19 of which are suites. Accommodations come standard with cordless phones, iPod docking stations, honor bars, Aveda bath products and laptop-sized safes. The special "Wicked Suite" features photos of characters from the show "Wicked" and was designed in purple and green. Overnight shoeshines are complimentary. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access is available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets welcome (fees apply).

Features

The Serrano prides itself on fun. Arriving guests can try their luck in the "Check-In Challenge," a friendly card-game competition. If the guest wins, the prize is a free upgrade (when available). If the house wins, the guest is invited to make a voluntary contribution to the local SPCA. The property also owns a library of board games for guests to use in the lobby. Upon request, games are delivered to rooms.

The 24-hour on-site fitness center is complimentary. The hotel also hosts an evening wine hour featuring local wines and offers complimentary limousine service to the Financial District on weekday mornings (when available).

Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Don't miss Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen, the adjacent (but hotel-operated) restaurant which offers a great menu of upscale tavern-inspired fare and an extensive beer selection.

not so hot

Room was too small for a couple. No bedside table on one side of bed. Only one bedside lamp. TV was on the side of the room, so couldn't be viewed straight on. Hotel was under construction. Slightly dodgy location. Surrounded by massage parlors.

Great Place in a Great City

This was a surprise trip for my girlfriend and I, and we couldn't have been more pleased. Staff was attentive and amazing (even tracked down a fan for us), the location can't be beat, and the wine reception was actually awesome. Ponzu is a bit overpriced (what hotel restaurant isn't?), but they have great happy hours. The hotel IS undergoing an outside renovation right now to restore its historical facade, but the noise was fairly minimal. I would have just liked to have been warned about it beforehand. One other thing: I've seen many people complain about the area due to the large population of homeless or other unmentionables. Get over it. If you decide to go to a big city like San Fran, you're going to see the homeless, and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not like the Serrano is in the middle of the Red Light District or anything. It's simply part of a very touristy stretch in Union Square where you'll see some hands with cups. It's just as simple to say 'I don't have any change' than to write a misleading review.

Excellent Location

The location of the hotel was perfect for our combined city jaunts and trips to Muir Woods & Monterey. The hotel is very close to BART, cable car and trolley stops. Walking trips included Union Square, Museum of Modern Art, Art of Dr. Suess Gallery (Geary St) and the Orpheum (Wicked). Hertz rental car very close by on Mason Street and facilitated trips to Muir Woods, Muir Beach and Monterey. Trips to Alcatraiz, Fisherman's Wharf, the Wax Museum, Coit Tower and Lombard Street were very much enjoyed. Hotel staff were very pleasant and helpul - especially with taxi arrangements and food recommendations. Taylor Street Cafe and Dottie's True BLue Cafe are excellent for breakfast and/or lunch -- expect long lines as both are very small venues. As neither my 16-year old son or 14-year old daughter had ever been to San Fran it was an educational trip as they learned the difference between high-density city living compared to medium-density midwest living.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

A visit to The Orpheum is definitely in order. We saw Wicked during our visit and it was an excellent performance in an excellent venue. A very short walk from the Serrano with a taxi return recommended after the showing.

Loved it

Everyone was so nice they even printed my airline tickets for me. I didn't like paying for parking, but other than that it was wonderful. The bed was so soft and compfy. The was I had to ask for free WiFi it was listed as so when I booked, but they said it was only for certain club members, but she gave it me for free anyway

Great place to bring your dog

Although it doesn't look like much from the outside, the lobby and rooms are charming and pretty -- and the staff is super friendly, both to my and my dog. The Union Square location is ideal for seeing the city, and my room (facing the back of the hotel -- not the street) was very quiet. I slept like a baby!!

Had a great time

We had a great stay at the hotel, the location was great. Clean, comfortable, close to Bart/powell stop and close to good restaurants like John's grill for dinner or $8 cab ride to water front. The room was not large but more than adequate, especially for the money. The staff is great! and they have good coffee in the morning and wine tasting in the evening (both free). I totally recommend this hotel for a couple for a get away weekend or other vacation. We will stay here again!Bring your own laptop if you need computer access or can use FedEx across the street from hotel.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

If you fly into Oakland you can take the BART into SF to the hotel for about $6.00 per person each way. You will not need a car. Get off the Bart at Powell St. and walk a few blocks to the hotel on Taylor. The hotel is close to car rental locations for $24.per day if you want a car for a day after you arrive. This will save you a lot in parking fees and airport transportation. Do not take Super Shuttle to or from the airport....you will be sorry.

I took this hotel twice

1. What did you do while you were there? - take rest, surf internet 2. Was there something missing that would have made your stay more enjoyable? - coffee maker 3. How did this compare to previous trips you have taken? - almost the same

excellent choice

Really good coffee in the morning, nice complementary wine from 5 - 6 in the evenings. The bathroom was small with limited shelf space, but that was a minor problem. The beds and pillows were some of the best I have ever experienced in a hotel.

Hotel Serrano

The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. We were very pleased with the location and the dining recommendations of the staff. The restaurant in the hotel was great for a quick meal. I wish we had chosen a place with a pool / hot tub...but this worked quite well.
