Stately boutique hotel near Union Square
Considering its name and the British flag flying out front, it's no surprise that the King George Hotel near San Francisco's Union Square district has a decidedly European flair. Decorative touches are subtle but continue this theme: chess boards in every room, coats of arms, and more. All guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access. The on-site restaurant, Winston's Bar and Lounge, even serves imported beer.
Highlights
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access
  • Hop on any one of the city's cable cars down the street
  • Union Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel
Rooms

Single Traveller

Really liked this hotel. As a single female traveller (meeting up with relatives living in SF) I felt really safe and secure at this hotel. Friendly helpful staff. Comfortable room. One day the lift was out of action and being on the 6th floor the walk up was quite tiring (for a fairly fit 67 year old) but this was only a minor inconvenience and did not distract from my stay.

Pleased for sure

The hotel is in a great area. Close to the BART station if you are flying in and would need to take it. Hotel is clean, nothing extraordinary, simple, but does the job for sure.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

If you don't have alot of time in SF (we stayed for 4 days) but want to see alot, do use public transportation to get across to the west side of the city. We walked everywhere (and loved it!) but may have seen more things if we drove places.

Great Location, not for those who like Peace & Quiet

This is an old property, almost a hundred years old in fact according the the hotel's guide book. Lobby is well decorated. Elevator & stairs are extra small by today's standards but add to the charm of the place if you seek that antique feel. The room was very small compared to modern standards. The bathroom was average both in size and overall appearance. The heating system is an old fashion charming furnace, there is no air conditioning in this hotel or central control system. The room had a nice ceiling fan. You could open several windows in the room and bathroom for fresh air but be prepared for street noise that is constant and 24/7. Two 24/7 diner type restaurants in the block and a 24/7 parking garage mean constant noise at this property both from pedestrians and motor vehicles even when the rooms windows were closed. Staff was helpful and professional. No breakfast, only coffee is offered. 24/7 room service consists of food from a diner next door delivered via the front desk to your room. Overall a good value for the location only a block off Union Square, just don't expect hours of uninterrupted restful calm at this property.

Lefty O'Doul's bar and restaurant is just around the corner on Geary Street - Serves up tasty traditional American / Irish food and great drinks for a moderate price.

Awesome Vacation

This is the first hotel I always check for availability when I go to SFO. It is right in the heart of downtown, surrounded by a whole lot of choices for eateries, stores, shops, and clubs. And the price is not so bad. Very clean room, and the staff ensure your needs are met.

King George: pretty good

Not bad. Great central location for Union Square shoppers. Walls a bit thin. Lots of loud noise from the street below, but that can't be helped. Nice staff.

Good short term alternative

Perfect location and affordability make this a good selection. Staff very nice. Hot water only part of the time and heat which would not turn off or down were two problems that detracted from an otherwise fine experience. My recommendation, below, would depend on learning that these problems had been fixed.

Family getaway

overall the hotel is convenient to all the shops n restaurants. The room was clean n beds were comfortable enough. Just remind the maid service not to make too much noise early in the morning. They may not realize some people like to sleep at 8 a.m. afterall it is holiday. Thanks but the hotel is a thumbs up.

Wonderful weekend trip

The best location possible and the price could not have been better. The staff was helpful and friendly. The rooms are confortable and the place is like an old victorian place. Our favorite restaurants were just a few blocks away like Kuleto's and Le Colonial.

Great place to stay

I've stayed here three times for a week at a time each. The internet isn't the best, but it is free. Shower hot water was flakey on me in 1 of the rooms, but has been fine in the other 2 I've stayed in. Other than that everything has been great.
