Art-Deco whimsy, 1920s-era grandeur and wine hour near Union Square
The Art-Deco era is alive and well at this boutique Hotel Union Square, which was returned to its 1920s grandeur during an exhaustive renovation in 2008. Today, the hotel features signature staircases and opulent moldings, while loft-like guest rooms boast brick walls and mosaic murals. Another benefit: the world's only Dashiell Hammett Suite, named after the author of "The Maltese Falcon." The property is part of the Personality Hotels Collection. It sits mere blocks from the shopping of Union Square.
Highlights
- Located blocks from Union Square
- Fun and literary inspired Dashiell Hammett Suite
- Funky style and 1920s grandeur
Rooms
Accommodations -- 39 rooms and seven suites -- are infused with the colors of San Francisco: crimson, gray and taupe. Designed to give the feel of a sophisticated urban apartment, rooms at the Hotel Union Square are custom-furnished with platform beds and tufted leather headboards, sleek dark-wood desks, velvety chaise lounges and expansive capsule-shaped mirrors. Many offer stunning views of the city skyline as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. Pets welcome (fees apply).Features
Hotel Union Square is best known for its specialty suites. The Dashiell Hammett Suite is the world's only suite dedicated to the author of "The Maltese Falcon." Apparently, the famous scribe loved the hotel so much that he booked his bride-to-be Josephine Dolan in that very suite on the night before their 1921 wedding. The hotel also features one Kids' Suite. This boasts a cherrywood trundle bed, a computer filled with history-related games, a Nintendo Wii, a writing desk and colorful rugs. The suite also displays a retro-style mixed-media collage of famous kid-friendly San Francisco landmarks.
All guests have access to a modest fitness center off-site; for a more intense workout experience, guests can purchase a pass to the Club One gym located around the corner (fees apply). Visitors also are welcome to join in a complimentary evening wine hour. Dry-cleaning and laundry services are available as well (fees apply).
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Too much contemporary doesn't work for convenient
Staff was very nice and quick service and great smile . but this hotel room was so so . It might nice contemporary room but everything not convenient . The washbasin is very small and water splashes out from it . Toilet paper was very low position and far . and no space for putting glasses on the washbasin area . Shower is uncomfortable , Bathroom's light switch location is not Enter wall , it is another side wall . why ?? just a little bit disappointment . but again , staff were very nice .

Recent Stay
The staff were very helpful & Friendly. The room was OK. The beds comfortable however the bed frames were not quite right. We both stubbed our toes several times. The hotel is aware of this problem, the frames were covered with foam padding. However I would say this was still uncomfortable. The other disappointment was there was no fridge in the room. I am an insulin dependant diabetic and not having a fridge to keep my insulin is was a headache. I have learned this is something to check in the future.

Short walk from hotel
Riding the hop on hop off for one day would have been enough. We didn't find it really useful. The city has very good bus/train service. I would use public transportation only in the future. The BART to the airport is very economic and quick I would use this again.

Shopping in the city
We took our family to San Francisco to do college visits and shop in the city. The hotel staff were great, we had an issue when we checked in we had a room with only a king bed and there were 3 of us. They got us a cot for the night and switched us to a room with 2 beds the next two nights, staff even moved our luggage for us, and they didnt charge us an additional fees for bigger room. Very clean and great location!!! I would definetly stay there again. July 2012

First trip to San Francisco
The hotel was PERFECT except,...due to the historic structure and the location (which was PERFECT) there was some noise. Not enough to wake you up in the middle of the night, but a little noisy. Tom the concierge was AMAZING. I can not say enough about his service. OUTSTANDING ! ! !

Outstanding Hotel!
The Hotel Union Square is an outstanding boutique hotel with an outstanding location for families traveling with children. For the girls, it is a block away from the Westfield Center...Bloomingdales and Nordstrums. The Walgreens, literally across the street, has everything you forgot or need for the small kids. The restaurant next door Tad's, provides room service and has the best burgers and chicken friend steak ever! Starbucks is a 1/2 block away. The cable car station is one block away. Many destinations are close to the hotel. The staff are pleasant and efficient. [...], the Concierge, is a rock star. The hotel manager is hands on and it shows. I had friends staying at the Four Seasons who spent over $400 a night who could not even come close to the updated design of the rooms or the polite service. We will definitely stay again at Hotel Union Square.Hint:Try the executive room for the kids and Mom and take another Queen room for Dad.Hint: If you ask for a quiet, room they will give you a very pleasant room on the interior light and air well.

Great home base to travel from in SF
Nice euro style boutique hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. You might want to bring earplugs for sleeping at night if you're not used to city noise as some rooms over look the street. Great location, walkable to SOMA,Ctown etc and for access to BART & MUNI transportation which will get you anywhere in SF and eastbay area...Union Sq area in general though,is a city shopping district jammed with tourists so we tended to spend all our time in many of the other wonderful SF neighborhoods ...car rental nearby for drives up/down coast and wine country....

A very nice experience
Second time in SFO, The Union Square was a pleasent surprise, rooms well designed, cleaned and great staff. Located in the best area, my only complaint is that I wish the TV had channels in spanish because my Dad felt a bit dissapointed, but the rest we had a wonderful experience!

Noise Patrol
Hotel was in a very good location for shopping. It was very close to the Westfield Mall, as long as some of other good shops. The cable car is close by too if you wanted to go for a ride. We were in a queen room, which was pretty small. We only stayed one night, so it did the job. The decor seemed pretty up to date, and it even had a ipod stand to listen to music. I liked the hotel until it was time for bed. We were in a room that faced the street, and it was so noisy. I know it's the city so people stay out late, but the sound bouncing off the building was enough to keep me up. There also was no AC, and it didn't get cool enough to really have a good night sleep. I think it would've been worth the extra $ to stay at the Marriot or a larger hotel w/ better amenities.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Parking at the hotel costs $30 overnight w/ in and out privileges. We almost parked there, but than decided we didn't need the car during the night and the next day we were going to another part of the city. We parked at the Ellis-O'Farrell Parking Garage which is right next door to their parking lot. It cost us $17 from 5pm-10am w/o in and out privileges. You should check there before paying at the hotel.
