Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousness

Green is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation.

Highlights
  • Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal Building
  • Complimentary nightly wine hour (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.)
  • On-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine
Rooms

The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

Features

Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.

All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.). Hotel Carlton also offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.

Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner.

great location, small room

Room and bathroom were very small. There was no space to put bathroom things for 2 people. But location compensates most of the inconveniences.

a solid 3-plus stars deal

I came to this hotel late during a midweek night and the friendly, courteous staff checked me in right away. I grabbed a bite and drink at the very chill local bar next door. On the first night, my room looked simple, but was comfortable. By the time I awoke in the morning, seeing the light filter in through the blinds, it was downright charming. My room was away from Sutter and pretty quiet, but this is a city and you do hear an occasional siren or street activity. My room was not air-conditioned, but SF is so cool at night, that sleeping with the window cracked open will suffice. Of course, this lets in street noise. Living in a city myself, this isn't a problem, but if you're used to quiet, this might be an issue. Anyway, I slept well every night. The hotel is in a great location in Lower Nob Hill, and it was easy to head out walking to various parts of the city. The WiFi was free. You can print your boarding pass at the lobby computers for free. There is a complimentary wine hour which gets pretty lively. I think they should get rid of the keyboard and just let people mingle, but the crowd seems to like it. Go figure...I've stayed at other hotels in the Union Sq and Nob Hill area and this one compares favorably. It isn't the most swank boutique hotel, but it really does deserve to be called charming. [...]doesn't let me give half-stars, so this one gets 3 instead of 3 1/2.

Nice stay, awesome staff!

Was attending an academic conference and vacationing with my wife. The neighborhood due south of the hotel is pretty sketchy, but other directions are fine; the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and the room was clean and welcoming. Would definitely recommend this place to people traveling on a budget, who don't mind a bit of a walk to the downtown core!

Great Place

A great place; the staff was very friendly, facilities are top-notch and the hotel is in a great location with easy access to transit. My only complaint would be that other guests were a bit loud, but you can't really hold the hotel responsible for that...

Friendly staff and nice hotel

The hotel staff was very kind and friendly. The rooms were decorated in a more personalized manner than most hotels. The hotel feels like an elegant hotel from the mid twentieth century. Everything is very well maintained. Within walking distance of major downtown areas. I stayed here as a cheaper alternative to the conference hotel at the Parc 55 and found the walk there very easy.

Mostly okay for a quick stay

The hotel is charming and has a boutique feel. Staff is personable. The big downside is he noise. It seems to have worse than paper-thin walls. Doors closing in the halls sounded like slamming - they must echo. You could hear EVERYTHING coming from the room next door, and they were very loud at 5 a.m. If you're a light sleeper, this isn't the place for you. Also, no in-room temperature controls. However, the beds were nice, it had a great walk-in closet, and was affordable. Nice to see recycling container in the room.

Just OK

The room was kind of old, and has central heating (no AC). It was pretty cold, as they would turn off the heat in the middle of the night - I later got a room heater after this ruined a couple of days sleep. The breakfast in the restaurant does not open well until 8.00, but there are a few cafes outside. Rooms were clean, and the front desk was helpful. Internet access was slow at times. Not great, but not bad either.

Hotel Was Great

The room was a little cold at night but everything else was great. The staff was really helpful in giving you directions around the city. Telling you where shopping areas are , what buses to take, walking routes, and what ares to avoid. I had to go to the financial district every morning and found that they have a shuttle service that is complimentary from 7:30 to 9 am.
