Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousness

Green is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation.

Highlights
  • Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal Building
  • Complimentary nightly wine hour (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.)
  • On-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine
Rooms

The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

Features

Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.

All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.). Hotel Carlton also offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.

Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner.

Great value for money

Safe location, cleanliness and friendliness were all things we wanted in a hotel with our young family and this hotel delivered in all areas and more. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and the location was perfect for what we wanted with a reasonable price. IF travelling through San Fran again we would not hesitate to stay here.

Great Hotel - Bad Marketing

There is nothing at all wrong with the Carlton Hotel. It is an amazing 2-2.5 star establishment. The only problem (and where my disappointment comes into play) is that it's marketed as a 4 star hotel. Needless to say, my expectations were a little high. The lobby of the hotel sets the tone/theme for the entire building. It's a little drab, but very cozy. They have an "international" theme which I thought was great and seemed to attract a wide variety of travelers. Most of the front desk staff and all of the housekeepers that I came into contact with were extremely nice. The hotel obviously has some sort of customer service training and it shows. The rooms themselves are very small and a little run down. There's no mistaking that the Carlton Hotel is an old building. The adjoining closet seemed larger than the bathroom and the only bath products they offer are shampoo, conditioner, bath gel (all received from a dispenser on the shower wall) and a small bar of hand soap. If you forget your hand lotion or expect any of the other amenities of a 4 star hotel, you're out of luck. I even asked for eating utensils because the delivery guy forgot to bring some and they didn't have any. All said, my stay was pleasant. The hotel is located within walking distance of some very nice places and I didn't spend much time in the room. I would stay here again if pressed; although for the same price you can book the Westin just down the street.

Wonderful experience

My wife and I choose the hotel for a weekend in San Francisco mainly because of its green character. Then I read earlier reviews and was concerned we made a mistake. Perhaps they were written before the hotel was taken over by new owners, but we did not find any of the criticisms to be valid. The valet parking made access very easy, the front desk staff were delightful, the room was spotless and very comfortable, and the hotel is centrally located in San Francisco. Although we did not have a chance to try it, the middle-eastern restaurant looked intriguing. I was pleased to find free wireless in the room, although it was very weak (what a relief to get away from it!) We will definitely come back.

The restaurant in the hotel should be tried. Another, which was one of the reasons for our trip, is San Francisco's first sustainable sushi restaurant, Tataki, 2815 California. We highly recommend it!

it´s ok

It was our trip for the thanks giving weekend. The location is ok (10 min to Union Square). Nice Check In. Very polite people. At night a little bit noisy (police, ambulance, firefighters), but not too much. We just stayed there to sleep. Good hotel. Test it!
