Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousness

Green is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation.

Highlights
  • Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal Building
  • Complimentary nightly wine hour (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.)
  • On-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine
Rooms

The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply).

Features

Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.

All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night (30 minutes at 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.). Hotel Carlton also offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.

Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner.

Don't believe the hype. Terrible.

Computers were "down" for 20 minutes while we waited to check in.[...]Elevator was impossibly small, like a broom closet. Rooms were only slightly bigger, with the bathroom experience being very intimate with anyone in the vacinity of your room.Luxurious view of a brick wall. The only plus is the free wifi.

A very friendly welcome at a great price

The welcome from the staff was wonderful, the room was very clean and beds comfortable, though the room was a little small. Free drinks from 5.30 to 6.30 in the lobby was an unexpected joy. We went to a gig at The Great American Music Hall, for which this hotel is perfectly located. Overall this is a great value hotel, the only things missing being a pool and a gym.

Good time

Great Staff, very nice. Only problem was very thin walls, could hear conversations clearly of the guests in rooms next to, below and above room.

Clean and comfortable

The staff was friendly and welcoming. The decor was beautiful, and the room was unique. We had a very comfortable stay, the bed was nice and so was the bathroom/shower. Much nicer than the places we usually stay. Valet parking however was expensive. I recommend asking them if there are other, cheaper parking options.

Cute, boutique horel with international

This hotel is located in a safe neighborhood, within a short walking distance to restaurants and shops. Very friendly staff. There is a free wine reception with music which, was an added bonus. The rooms were very clean and quiet. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

A Gem in the City

Great Nob Hill location at an AMAZING price. Room was terrific - old fashioned, but I like the ones that have survived the big earthquakes! No doubt the best, nicest service from the staff. They are incredibly attentive and sweet. Don't miss the free wine soiree with live music every night at 5:30 - great way to unwind after the day before heading out for the evening!

Head down a couple of blocks to Polk Street and check out all the great tiny ethnic restaurants within a few blocks of the hotel. Or just go right next door for a great bar and restaurant, too.

Value.

Loved the staff and their enthusiasm to serve and make sure we had fun. They kept it light-hearted without losing any style points. We enjoyed the world theme and the warm decor. We easily (comfortably) walked to the Union Square area on a cool night and walked back. Staff had lots of real restaurant recommendations, not the chains. Staff included the kids in every transaction in some way to keep them engaged. We were worried that the thin walls would make for a sleepless night, but we didn't hear a thing from our neighbors at night. The old radiator heater may be something to consider if you are a light sleeper. If you are staying with the kids, the double beds are a bit small for the 6' plus folks. We will definitely consider this property and the Joie la Vie company again when in SF. We are hooked.

Nice Hotel not far from Union Square

The Carlton Hotel is a great little hotel for folks who don't want to be right on top of Union Square, but want to be able to walk there. The hotel was clean and well-maintained. I only have 2 complaints: 1.) a fire station and nearby hospital can make the hotel a noisy place, particularly if you're on a lower floor. 2.) San Francisco got fairly cold at night and there was no heat in my room. The radiator made all kinds of noises in the morning, but no heat. However, when I mentioned this the next morning, the very pleasant staff member installed a portable heater in my room. From thereon the temperature was quite pleasant.
