Intimate boutique hotel with outdoor pool just steps from Union Square
This Union Square mainstay, dating back to 1908, mixes old and new under one roof. Older rooms bring with them a hearty dose of history; newer accommodations, completed in the last 15 years, are more spacious and have upgraded amenities. There's an outdoor pool -- a rarity for downtown San Francisco -- a heated sauna and an on-site barbershop. One of the city's most popular taverns, The Daily Grill, is located on the ground floor.

I could not ask for better people to welcome you to the hotel than the front desk staff, Shirley is the best. Love the location but with it comes city noise. They provide you with ear plugs but didn't need it. Basic room and CLEAN. Shower was a little tight. Liked that windows open, it was raining and loved the sound and smell of rain.

R and G Lounge is the best Chinese restaurant around, worth the walk and wait. Fried salt and pepper crab only available for dinner. House special beef for lunch. MAKE RESERVATIONS first.

Perfect location
The service was excellent. I loved the fact that the hotel was close to everything...restaurants, theater, car rental, shopping! I had room service for all three breakfasts and they were delicious and the servers were very courteous. My room was clean and comfortable. It was located in the back, so it was quiet. I love the doorman and the bell staff...so welcoming and nice. This is a hotel I will return to....and soon.

Excellent location and value
The location was perfect for my theater-going plans. The staff was extremely helpful and the room was spacious and pleasant. (Only drawback: the A/C-heater fan was noisy.) I like being near Union Square, the theaters, fine art galleries, and Muni which I use to go to either the Legion of Honor or the DeYoung. I'll probably stay at the Handlery again for future trips.

Both the Curran and the Geary theaters are just a block or so away. The Orpheum and the Golden Gate are either within walking distance or a very short cab ride away.

Very helpful, courteous staff. Fabulous location. An older hotel, so the room was a bit noisy, although very clean and updated.

Charming, Clean, Well-Situated Hotel
I had a room billed as "petite," which worried me a bit until I saw the room. For one person, even a couple, it was more than adequate: a desk, comfortable bed, large clothes closet, modern bathroom. The room was spotless, and my bed was extremely comfortable. The hotel was air conditioned, but I preferred opening the windows. Would highly recommend.

Xanadau Gallery (on Maiden Lane) is an ethnographic art/jewelry gallery housed in a Frank Lloyd Wright building. Even if you're not interested in the type of museum-quality works they offer (Pre-Columbian, Indian, African, etc.), a visit to see the building is a must.

Staff was great and attentive. I only had issue with 2 things. 1. The long wait for a cab if I depended on the hotel. 2. Unable to get a late check-out when I had a late flight. I wanted to relax and the airline had just delivered my luggage as I was going home.

Great Hotel in Great Location
I wanted a class, clean, reasonably priced hotel within easy walking distance of Union Square and Chinatown. This was it! In addition, it had a very nice restaurant.

Nice, clean and next to all action
I was there for the JCAHPO meeting. The Hotel was nice, clean and conveniently located. The room was clean but with old furnishings and I couldn't adjust the temperature. I missed the free WIFI that was available in the rest of the area hotels ,
