Good Location, Good Place to stay, but Noisy
Hotel was in a good location, easy to walk places and get around. Staff was very helpful, breakfast was very basic, but good enough to get you started. Small rooms, but don't think there are large rooms for 2 anywhere around there. Housekeeping was great - our room was very clean. Only complaint is the noise. We were 4th floor street side. I felt like I was trying to sleep with the windows open. Earplugs should have been packed. Lots of street noise, you know when the bars let out and I am guessing there was a fire station not too far away. I would stay here again, but I would definately bring my earplugs. Good value too - much cheaper than other hotels.

Great location and staff
The Hotel California is located near all the things we like to do: Shopping, cable cars, wharf, night clubs, restaurants and more. The room was cozy and clean. The staff was excellent and accomodating. Yes, it's small and a little noisy, but welcome to the big city : ) Overall, really good value.

Very disappointed in my recent stay while in town for a nearby conference. The staff at this hotel is thoroughly unprofessional. The gentleman at the desk with dark hair was consistently rude and refused to provide a receipt for my stay at check out, claiming that he did not do that for "___ (online site) customers." He also would not provide proof of my deposit/refund of the $50 required at check-in. My room on the 7th floor was incredibly loud. There is an outdoor restaurant/bar below the hotel that was very noisy until 2am everyday. There was also a lot of street noise (sirens, cars, etc) coming in all night. I could also hear my neighbors' conversations. This is not a place to get any rest, apparently - the walls and windows are paper thin. Will not be returning to this hotel ever. That being said, the restaurant inside the hotel, Millennium, is quite good. So dine but don't stay here!

10 for location, 3 for noise
great location, perfectly adequate hotel, near to a "cult" (ie well regarded) ramen noodle shop (Katan-Ya), breakfast in the morning included and was quite good, coffee decent, but no AC in the room, which was OK with the fan in october but with the windows open was very noisy - especially on a weekend due to the bar directly across from our windows, and on a weekday due to trash collection and street cleaners. On the whole, not bad, but if you cannot sleep through noise, don't bother booking here.

Meh
I stayed here with my husband while he was on a business trip. The location was good, and the staff were as expected. However the room was very small, and the bathroom not very clean. The fixtures were coming away from the wall, there was mold in the grout and there was a layer of dust in the window. I had read on the sight that if you wanted a mini fridge that you could ask for one to be brought up to your room. When we asked at check-in we were told that they were only for people staying in the suites/ premium rooms. On our last day we had a knock at our room door from housekeeping. It was 9:30am and we had just gotten back from breakfast. I guess it was just a 'reminder' that we had to check out, and to find out what time we would be leaving so they could some in and clean. I don't think that we will stay here again. I am willing to pay a little more for a better experience.

Nice but noise issue
great location, good breakfast with fantastic raisan bread? Major downside is the restaurant next store is very loud and open until 2am. This made sleeping difficult. Without this issue would have rated a four. Also free wine and cheese hour which is very nice.

Good value for your money.
I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The location does not get any better. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms are small but to be expected at an older property such as this. The elevator was also small, slow and could only hold 4 people but so what?!?!? It was a 10 min walk from the Bart which made it even more attractive vs paying sky high prices at other nearby hotels. I would stay here again.

Pleasantly suprised.
Being familiar with the downtown are in San Francisco , I was careful to choose a hotel that was not in a bad neighborhood or certain streets within. I thought I did a fair job , and I did . The place is not far from union square at all, which in turn allows you to merge with a flow of continuous walking traffic of business people and tourist. A safe feeling. We were greeted with great hospitality, and a complimentary shot of quality tequila. Talk about a surprise. Sounds kind of weird and maybe "cheap", but it was fun. I was checking in with my partner for valentines day, so it was fitting. The room was quite nice, small, but to be expected. No complaints otherwise.

Entertainment tip:
Short drive from hotel
Market street from union square to the Castro (my favorite place for a subtle alternative look a culture) and to the wharf is full of fun things. Market street is just fine for a stroll to shop , drink and eat. Stick on the main path, as always when traveling, and youll have a great time in San Francisco.
