Not so relaxing trip

Terrible birthday getaway

To begin with, we were given a bedroom with one bed when we had booked a double bed. They said all rooms with two beds were booked and completely disregard our reservation. The room was tiny but 4 adults had to cram in. The hotel card key didn't work. We went down to the lobby 3 times to get them to fix our keys. At the third time, the receptionist sent security with us "to show us how to use they key." The key didn't work for the security guard either! They finally said they would reprogram the key and they ony gave us one working key. The air conditioning didn't work in the room. Only the bathroom would get cool. We were hot and uncomfortable during the entire stay. Cleaning crew and hotel bartenders were nice but overall the room was a huge disappointment! It was clean but subpar amenities. Valet was $40 and they parked our car in an outdoor lot. We will never go back.

The W

Loved the hotel... staff was awesome super nice and accommodating! But the bars closed really early and there was no hot tub-weird for a 4 star and to pay that much.

Great Location for Downtown Conferences

I stayed at the W while attending a conference at the San Diego Convention Center. The hotel was just a 10 min walk from the convention center and 5 min walk from great restaurants and bars. The hotel was beautiful. My room was very clean and comfortable. Unfortunately, the group in the room next door returned at 3AM and were terribly loud. I called the front desk and they had someone at the neighbors door within minutes. I would highly recommend this hotel to any friends or family staying in San Diego.

We are not their normal demographic

This hotel probably skews more to the under 35 single dating crowd, with the DJ and other funky things. We are 40 year olds with a small kid. That being said, we brought the whole family and the dog for a quick get-away and were pleasantly surprised. We are got a small, but very comfortable room, the dog was more than welcome and they brought a crib right up for our toddler. We travel a ton, in a variety of hotels and levels and this had 2 things that are very critical to us, a comfortable bed with no groove worn down the mattress, and a workout room with free weights and good cardio machines. All in all, we would stay here again, even if we look like the parents of the rest of the guests.

Good experience overall

The W chain is a step above without being extravagant or high luxury. The hotel is very nice. As I read before my trip, it's a bit isolated, but easy enough to walk to restaurants or take a quick cab. We actually walked to lunch, then down to the USS Midway museum. So location is good to downtown sights, just nothing on the immediate blocks around it. As I also read before, the valet parking is quite expensive at $37 a day. That can add up. But the appeal to me is the overall modern design of the W hotel. Service was very good from all.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Tender Greens restaurant is a short walk from the hotel, as is the USS Midway, which is a great museum to visit.

Hip hotel, questionable location.

W's are decidedly for young people. Lots on energy. Loud music. Lobby full of people on laptops. Great staff. The San Diego location is not the best, however. Across from the county courts and correctional facilities. Quite a few homeless folks in the neighborhood make walking a bit uncomfortable. Several blocks from Gaslight Quarter and Convention Center.

Great price

Great price for a W. Not really the best location, but a short half mile walk from LIttle Italy and Gaslamp.

1 star (if it wasn't for a serious attitude problem with staff, I'd give them five stars)

It it wasn't for a serious attitude problem by the hotel staff, I'd give them five stars. Problems happen. Just because there was a problem, I didn't "deduct" points. However, the problem was 100% the hotels, yet still the hotel staff displayed a serious bad/lecturing attitude. That's what I remember. That's the lasting impression. That's why the hotel receives the lowest possible rating of 1 star. Too bad. And on check-out, when I was asked about my stay, I made sure the staff knew of the issue.
