A poetic combination of sol and mar the Spanish words for sun and sea Hotel Solamar is a name that captures the allure of its San Diego setting - an area rich with the sun and proximity to the ocean. Hotel Solamar is the epitome of urban coastal chic. The decor radiating light and warmth is only eclipsed by the sunny personalities of the staff with their bright smiles and a welcoming spirit. From sunrise to sunset the goal of the day is fun and ease - even for business travelers -in a setting of style and comfort. As the sun set... the daylight may fade but the heat continues well into the evening with a lively and sophisticated scene at LOUNGEsix on Solamar Terrace or coastal California dining at Jsix. From check-in to check-out Hotel Solamar is the equivalent of calm waters and sunny skies. The 235 guestrooms and suites provide the perfect space to relax and create with overstuffed chairs LCD flat-screen TVs opening windows and a fully stocked honor bar. Each room offers welcome amenities such as Gilchrist and Soames bath products plush robes laptop friendly safes and spacious work areas with ergonomic chairs. Adjacent to the hotel guests will be enticed by Jsix Restaurant featuring Executive Chef Christian Graves enlightened menu serving Coastal Cuisine guided by the principles of sustainability and inspired by California farms and the regions coastline.

Boyfriends 1st time to San Diego

I brought my boyfriend to California for the first time and we stayed in San Diego at the Solamar Hotel. The location was great we were able to walk to tons of different restaurants and shopping places and the pier. The staff at the hotel were very helpful with showing us and telling us places to go eat and check out.

Family vacation/football game

When we checked in, it was not a good start. Since we booked it through a third party (cheap tickets) the hotel was sold out. We booked a room with 2 queens since their was 3 of us, the only thing they had open for us was a king room. We had to make a bed for him out of the chair and 2 ottomans since he is 6' 5" but we made due, the next day we got to move to a room like I had booked. Location was perfect, close to all the restaurants, bus station, ect. The walls are very thin, as doors slammed all night and was awakened around 3 am due to someone's phone ringing. All in all we would probably stay there again.

Enjoy the stay

The location is pretty convenient. I also like the happy hour from 5 to 6 and you can drink free white wine and red wine. The parking fee ($45) is really high though.

Great Trip, Nice hotel.

Hotel is in a wonderful location, close to the Gaslamp, harbor, convention center and Petco Park. Due to the cost we did not use the Hotels valet, ended up parking in a downtown garage just down the street. Once the car was parked we walked everywhere, shops, resturants and the bay. Staff were all very nice and very couteous. We enjoyed the wine which is served to the guests between 5-6 pm. Our only complaint, which was not the hotels fault was the noisey guests in the room next door. Does make you question the sound insulation used though. Would definitly stay again.

Location, Location and a great Staff

As the title states the location is near perfect for our purpose. We were there for a show at the convention center and the hotel is centrally located in the Gaslamp district just one block off the "main drag" therefore quiet at the hotel. Staff was friendly and courteous for whatever the reason we contacted them. We had a little housekeeping issue with our room upon arrival but is was corrected immediately after we notified the staff. We did not use the amenities or restaurant due to our schedule but everything looked as good as advertised. We received a great discount for our business stay otherwise I would not pay the going rate unless you go for vacation and fully utilize the services.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Many great places to eat within walking distance. You may have to step around a panhandler or bum sleeping on the sidewalk. None were aggressive but it tainted the experience. San Diego should keep it clear in the main tourist areas.

Perfect. It doesn't get any better.

The hotel lived up to its high reputation. It was clean, modern, comfortable, eco-friendly, well-priced, conveniently located in the hub of town but not noisy at all. The price was excellent! I appreciate the free internet service, high quality beddings, excellent coffee & tea free for guests. Didn't get a chance to take advantage of all the amenities this wonderful hotel offered. Enrolled in the Kimpton membership and will definitely stay here for future travels.

Pleasant Stay

It was a pleasant stay. I had a King Suite; it was a very spacious room. The internet connection was fast. The closet had shelves to unpack and plenty of hangers for clothing. The room was wonderful. I did dine on the 4th floor outdoor lounge one night. It was delicious and very good service. The hotel is located a few blocks from the Padre Baseball Stadium. I heard it is a very busy place when there is a game. I did hear music from an outdoor bar across the street on the last night, Thursday. I just turned up the fan and put in earplugs and was able to sleep easily. The front desk was happy I mentioned the loud music and was going to contact the GM at the bar. I would stay here again but ask for a quiet room away from the outdoor bar across the street on 6th. The only downside is the parking. I did not want to pay $32 for valet parking. They do not offer self-serve parking at the hotel. The guys who handle valet where very quick to direct me to the parking garage just two blocks down. There is an attendant 24 hours a day; it is clean, secured, and very reasonable. It ranged from $8-10 a day depending upon if I took the car out during the day. Good location. Close to many restaurants and not far from shopping. I attended a conference at a hotel 7-8 blocks away and took a taxi. It cost was only $5. Very easy to get around.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Park at the parking garage just 2 blocks down on 6th street. It is $10 a day if you don't take your car out. Much more reasonable than the $32 valet fee. Other hotels charged that much and more. Take a taxi to get around the area instead of driving.
