Great for Downtown
The Ramada was very clean, tidy, and boasts an incredibly friendly and efficient staff. Rooms are tiny, but comfortable. The only drawback is that there should be some sort of restriction on TALKING LOUDLY IN THE HALLWAYS outside other guests rooms. Also liked the fact that the 2 queen beds are in separate little rooms. Nice rooftop seating area with views of the city and port.

The Chestnuts
Completely charming, slightly noisy
The Ramada Gaslamp (St. James Hotel) was extraordinarily charming. Historic architectural details have been maintained/restored from the original 1913 design, including the original gated "fastest elevators in the world" and what appears to be original tile and stained glass. The location was ideal for anyone looking for convenient access to public transit or for proximity to nightlife, shopping, and dining. We enjoyed relatively fast, easy transit to the Embarcadero (a great early morning stroll!), Downtown, Old Town (a little "touristy"), La Jolla, and Tijuana. This center-city convenience, however, came with slightly more late-night noise than a light sleeper might prefer, and the hotel walls don't block very much of any loud conversations from in the hall or in the next room. But this did not really impact our overall very good experience. What really stood out - more than the beautiful aesthetic, more than the impeccably clean amenities, and more than the vibrant neighborhood - was the top-notch, friendly & welcoming staff. Above all, Alex in reception had excellent recommendations for absolutely everything, and greeted us warmly in the morning and enthusiastically upon our return. It was clear that he, as well as other staff, takes pride in beautiful San Diego and felt personally invested in contributing to our positive experience of "his" city. I have never been more pleased. Highly recommended.

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Enjoy Tijuana's vibrant pulse and some really fun shopping by first hopping on the Blue line trolley to San Ysidro. The city center is then just several blocks walk. Every shopkeeper will give you personalized attention and a pretty good deal. Take the same precautions that you would in any major city, and this gem south of the border will leave you invigorated and with great memories. Be prepared for 1- or 2-hour wait for re-entry to the U.S. - enjoy the colorful pop-up market that surrounds the route.

Quick Weekend trip
Only spent one night. Easy walking distance to Gaslamp Quarter. Staff very nice. Hotel has old time feel. Elevators have old style open door with the sliding gate. Best part of hotel is the rooftop patio. Beautiful 360 view of Petco Stadium, downtown and Coronado bridge. Definitely worth the price we paid to have that "location....location...location. Only problem is where to park if you have a car. Your car can be put in hotel valet or needs to be put in public parking garage. We will be coming again.

Great location and very friendly staff
We read all the reviews before we booked this hotel so we were aware there were issues with the 100 year old elevator and room size. As antique lovers we felt the elevator was charming. Yes it was slow but the stairs provide an easy climb if you can't wait. The rooms were tight but equipped with all the amenities needed and very clean. Above all, the staff was great...especially the front desk and valet drivers. And of course, the location was everything! Walking distance to just about everything. We would definitely stay there again.
