Location can not be beat

Had a boys weekend with my four brothers and needed a place in the city, close to culture and food. This was it. While the hotel is a bit worn around the edges (think 1960), it has been upgraded in the past year or so - new AC, improved restaurant, exterior redesign - and is probably better than it was several years ago. It still has a bit of the 60's motel feel with exterior walkways, a fair amount of wear and tear in the rooms, and some funkiness in the overall feel of the place. the lobby is nice and very European feeling, the 4th floor restaurant had spectacular views, and the 5th floor terrace (ps - the one they show on the web site is closed and only opens for special events - there is a much smaller one open for guests) was a great place to spend the evening though it can get crowded. But, on the other hand, this location turned out to be spectacular - one block off of little Italy with bistros, coffee shops, and pubs galore - while being walking distance from the harbor, the gaslight district, the train station, and more. Plus, it was only 1 block from a freeway entrance, which was a plus for getting to places by auto quickly. I should note that the only parking is vale and it is pricy - very pricy. The service was exceptional, particularly the desk and vale staff. Very helpful folks. I suspect there are some seriously sub-par rooms in the hotel - we did hear some guest complaining -, but we were not there for the rooms, rather for the city and so it worked very well for us. Beds were comfortable, AC cold, and the general ambiance pleasant. Not perfect, but in the summer, about 1/2 of what one would pay elsewhere in the city. Cigars and drinks on the rooftop at night, great views, and walking distance to sights in the daytime (about a 10 minute walk to the USS Midway as a reference)

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

one block to the west - check out the Italian restaurants and British pubs. Do NOT miss Filippi's In the front it is a deli and store, but has a fantastic restaurant in the back through the store. Not to be missed. If you get there too late on Fri/Sat, be prepared to stand in line. You could call in a take-out and avoid the lines.

Nice hotel

Nice modern hotel. Stayed two days on way back from Mexico. Parking was somewhat high and wireless connection was not great, but otherwise I would stay again. Very close to Little Italy and downtown sights and easy access to the trolley. Good location. And staff was friendly and helpful.

Lovely boutique hotel

The rooms were very clean and newly renovated so that made our stay very enjoyable. The beds were extremely comfortable to sleep on. It's located in Little Italy and the neighbourhood has a whole host of restaurants and cafes to try. Also, it's a short walk to the Marina!

If I could give 0 stars, I would!

I was very disappointed with the Buena Vista Hotel. The room was very dark, having just one window which showed to the inner court of the motel (yes, this is more a motel than a hotel!) with parked cars. No "VISTA" at all, apart from the restaurant which the most disgusting breakfast buffet I ever ate in my life (we all had stomach ache after eating breakfast, as it was so fat). The staff could not do anything about our complaints, as we had booked over "orbitzz", so that was no fun. I DO NOT RECOMMEND to go there for a vacation, as it did totally spoil ours and my memories of a vacation in San Diego!!

get out of the heat

It is a good location $22.00 to park and I had my dog But what the web site failed to disclose was a $75.00 no-refundable deposit for "cleaning". I got to my room there was a dried urine stain in the carpet and smeared fecal matter on the carpet like someone picked it up with a bag but didn't wash it up. It was quite and there was a coffee shop and small store within 4 blocks

awesome hotel

The Porto Vista was a pleasent unexpected surprise. We drove up to a new renovated hotel with old world charm. New clean rooms with 12 ft ceilings. Nice views of downtown, water and Coronado bridge from the centrally located rooftop deck , which had nice lounge furniture to use. The staff was super friendly and always used my name which is huge in my book. Lastly the unlimited access to the valet with one flat nightly rate encouraged us to use our car go eat and shop. 100% would stay again. Remodel still in progress but not inconvenient or noisy.

All the reviews are, true and I should've listened

Unless you blatantly can't afford to stay anywhere else, I would skip this hotel. The reviews are correct, the lobby is gorgeous, then you're thrust into this melrose place style hotel where everything faces inward and the center piece is the parking lot that runs between the rooms. The rooms were average at best, the place is really loud -- every suitcase that rolled by, every person walking, when someone starts their car etc. I just would never stay here again. I was born and raised in San Diego and there are better places to stay - I'd recommend the Sofia downtown or La Pensione if you want to stay in little Italy. I'd like my money back from this experience.

If you're just staying the night and leaving by 10am, find street parking. It's all unmetered street street parking so after 6pm and before 10am you should be able to leave your car free of charge.
