For the Price you can do Better

The hotel location is right in the heart of the Gaslamp District which is great. The hotel is more like a boutique style hotel and is esthetically pleasing and cute but the staff is sub par at service. The valet employees were more professional than the hotel employees. For the price you pay which is not cheap you expect professional employees with exceptional service but everyone there can use training on this and I mean everyone. The front desk told us that our cehckin was at 4pm even though my confirmation showed us 3pm. With no expression she offered us complimentary drink tickets to the bar (keep the tickets and show me some personality). We went up to the bar while we waited for our room and checked our bags at the desk to be delivered to the room. We sat at the bar by the pool and waited 7 minutes until we were acknowledged. We received our drinks and put in a food order but after 30 minutes realized no food and guess what no order had been put in actually because as we signed off on our tab there was nothing...great huh? When we went to our room there was a knock on the door to let us know they could not find our bags and asked us to describe our one bag for them....really? you cannot find the single bag we just left an hour ago?! So the gentleman went back down and came back up after we described our bag and brought it back. When I used the room phone to find out what time the pool closed the front desk told me "hold on let me find out" hold on is more of a command phrase but rather "May I place you on hold while I find that information" and wait shouldn't they have that right away? We went downstairs to ask the front desk for some recommendations of places to eat and stood at the front desk in front of two employees not on calls or with customers for a good three minutes before one of them finally said "have you been helped" really does it look like we have been helped or did you think we were standing there for fun? Again the hotel is pretty but the service is not worth the amount of money you pay!

Good location, thin walls

We arrived late afternoon after a long day of traveling and wanted to take a quick rest before heading out on the town. Our room was right next to the elevators which made an unnecessary loud ding - almost like an alarm - so it was very hard to rest. We could also hear the people in the room next to us; they weren't being loud, the walls were just very thin. When we gave up on resting and decided to get ready, we discovered that the bathroom outlet did not work (yes, we tried pressing the reset button), which isn't that big of a deal, but there weren't any other outlets by a mirror. We decided to call down to the front desk and try for another room. They were very accommodating and sent a bell hop up promptly. The next room was just fine, but the walls were still very thin. The look of the room was very modern and appealing, but the lack of a dresser or any place to store clothes was a problem. Also, the practically see-through door to the bathroom left little to the imagination for someone else in the room. If you enjoy some privacy in the bathroom, this is not the place for you. The mini-bar was overpriced, no surprise there. We weren't sure if we were able to really use anything in the room - like the coffee pot or the bathrobes without being charged. The spa looked great, but also a bit pricey. The pool area looked wonderful, but the weather was not the best so we did not get to use it. We did enjoy the location of the hotel, the modern appeal, the friendly staff, and the cleanliness.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

Spend a day in Balboa park. Lots to see and do in a beautiful area just north of the gaslamp quarter.

We stayed one night at the Se for our anniversary. It was a beautiful building, and had a very competent and courteous staff.
