In addition to an impressive guest list, several prominent local figures have been permanent residents, including clothier Bill Solof, restaurateur Ray Lubach and San Diego Padres manager Lefty O'Doul.
Despite extensive renovations in 2009 and 2010, much of Lafayette's historic grandeur still exists today. One highlight of the San Diego property is the original, Olympic-sized Terrazzo-tile pool. Guests and locals flock to the Red Fox Room & Piano Bar, which still hosts nightly entertainment. Dining
- Red Fox Steak House
- The quintessential steakhouse that doesn't just reach for the lounge vibe, it helped define it. The entire interior was shipped to the United States for blonde cinema actress, Marion Davies, and was dismantled (again!) and installed at the Lafayette during the 1950's. If the history and nightly piano doesn't get you, the stiff cocktails, steak, and seafood surely will. Hours: Monday - Thursday (11am - Midnight) Friday - Saturday (11am - 1:30am) Sunday (4pm - 1:30am)
- Imig's Kitchen & Bar
- Loved by locals and guest alike, Imig's serves up a modern, casual and honest twist on breakfast and brunch. The relaxed and open setting gives guests the perfect space to gather daily for breakfast, brunch (or both, after all you're on vacation) or a mid-day custom cocktail overlooking the historic Weissmuller Pool. Hours: Everyday (7am - 3pm)
- North Park Neighborhood Restaurants
- Quickly becoming nationally recognized for it's culinary diversity and appreciation for craft beer, the neighborhood offers Lafayette guests an incredible opportunity for food exploration. We encourage you to dine with us once (ok, maybe twice) and then experience the local cuisine within our wonderful neighborhood! Our front desk can assist with recommendations and reservations.

it sucked!
I had to get a hotel room due to a change in my flight itinerary that I did not want to make, not sure WHY I had to change anyway, the entire flight home took 2 days and was a nightmare. When we checked in at the airports, both at our beginning location and at San Diego, we could not find our confirmation, it took the airlines themselves to do some research and find our reservations.

Unforgettable, that's what you are....
The hotel is a landmark on the Boulevard, great architecture from the 50's, in the process of being remodeled. It needs a lot of work. We asked for a room that has been redone and we ended up with a HUGE room, with 2 brand new queen bed, with new beddings and pillows, new lights, and tv. That was that. The bathroom had classic San Diegan charm, very clean. The staff at front desk was has helpful has they could. We did not have coffee/tea makers yet, or other furniture, but it did not matter. We ate around the corner where there are many mom and pop fabulous local restaurants. Lafayette hotel is located at the edge of University Heights, Hillcrest and Normal Heights area which are all amazing to hang out. This hotel has great potential and the staff the right attitude, so i will continue to support them until they are all done and hope to come celebrate with them the effort put in preserving a Great San Diego heritage.

needs updating
The hotel has definitely seen better days. They say they are renovating, but we didn't see any sign of it. The hotel looks worn out, it could be gorgeous if they get if fixed up.

A good place for the price
We stayed just for a night. We were looking for a place to sleep. For this purpose the hotel is good. If you like luxuries, then pay 3-4 times more and reserve another hotel. Everything has its price.

run down dream
The best thing about this hotel is the pool- big enough for laps. Apparently they usually open it to the public on the weekends, which would have been a nuisance I'm guessing. They are suspending that right now since they are "renovating"...but for now it's great for laps. I saw someone reviewing it as terrible green water- not the case when I was there. Aside from the pool, though...this hotel is very low rent. The rooms, beds felt like a bad motel, stained carpet, cracked walls. The "breakfast buffet" was down a long hallway and in a room that felt like a bad conference room with low ceilings and a few tables set up. Cold cereal and bagels were the offerings. And, well, the coffee sucked. It wasn't a room I wanted to spend any time in. I guess the rates here are cheap, and I have heard there are better rooms by the pool. But I looked at 3 on the 3rd floor and they were all depressing. The location is near the 805, but as far as going out and walking anywhere, it's not that kind of neighborhood. Lots of cops out on a Sat. night. I was glad to have a frig and microwave, but the room just didn't have a comfortable vibe to it, so staying in it and eating food just wasn't ideal.

They have a lot of work to do
It is a great old building but it needs to be remodeled big time. It was perfect since it was close to the zoo for us. We stayed one night and the beds are the most horrible and hard things I have ever been on. The bathroom was nice but needed new fixtures(big rust stain coming down from the sink) and the light washard to see. The room was huge which was very nice since I could easily put up our playpen for the baby. The carpet was filthy and my baby found an old piece of cereal on the floor from who knows when and I kept a close eye on her there. The complimentry breakfast buffet was two types of cereal and juice. Not really what I would call a buffet. This could be a gret property but there need to be a lot of money put back into the place.

Historic is the keyword
This hotel is pretty old, but in a decent location with underground parking, which was great because it was raining a little bit. Continental breakfast was muffins and cereal, OJ and coffee. The room was pretty tight with 2 beds, but for an older building I suppose that is normal. Bathroom needed redone really bad, fixtures were so hard to use my kids couldn't wash their hands themselves. Beds may need updated soon too. I think they are in the process of fixing it up? The lobby has been redone and is really nice, but the rooms need a little update. It wasn't bad for the deal we got, and the short drive to the zoo and seaworld was great. It's right in balboa park area.

Good for the price, I suppose
Checked into the hotel using it only as a place to sleep in mind so it did it's job. Hotel itself is very outdated and needs a lot of TLC. It was able to follow through on what is advertised such as free Wifi and breakfast, however the quality of such items were sub par. Possibly one of the worst hotels i've stayed in, but good for it's price I suppose.
