Features

Built by Larry Imig in 1946, the Lafayette Hotel & Suites spent its first few decades as a popular spot among celebrities and movie stars. In addition to an impressive guest list, several prominent local figures have been permanent residents, including clothier Bill Solof, restaurateur Ray Lubach and San Diego Padres manager Lefty O'Doul.

Despite extensive renovations in 2009 and 2010, much of Lafayette's historic grandeur still exists today. One highlight of the San Diego property is the original, Olympic-sized Terrazzo-tile pool.  Guests and locals flock to the Red Fox Room & Piano Bar, which still hosts nightly entertainment. Guests also receive complimentary access to an on-site fitness center and free Wi-Fi Internet access in the lobby. Dining

Red Fox Steak House
The quintessential steakhouse that doesn't just reach for the lounge vibe, it helped define it. The entire interior was shipped to the United States for blonde cinema actress, Marion Davies, and was dismantled (again!) and installed at the Lafayette during the 1950's. If the history and nightly piano doesn't get you, the stiff cocktails, steak, and seafood surely will. Hours: Monday - Thursday (11am - Midnight) Friday - Saturday (11am - 1:30am) Sunday (4pm - 1:30am)
Imig's Kitchen & Bar
Loved by locals and guest alike, Imig's serves up a modern, casual and honest twist on breakfast and brunch. The relaxed and open setting gives guests the perfect space to gather daily for breakfast, brunch (or both, after all you're on vacation) or a mid-day custom cocktail overlooking the historic Weissmuller Pool. Hours: Everyday (7am - 3pm)
North Park Neighborhood Restaurants
Quickly becoming nationally recognized for it's culinary diversity and appreciation for craft beer, the neighborhood offers Lafayette guests an incredible opportunity for food exploration. We encourage you to dine with us once (ok, maybe twice) and then experience the local cuisine within our wonderful neighborhood! Our front desk can assist with recommendations and reservations.

Adequate

If you set "Motel 6" in mind, you won't be disappointed. If you expect more, you will certainly feel let down.

Not that great!

It needed major updating and the continental breakfast was very limited. The free wi-fi was very slow and you needed a cord to get on the internet, only like one outlet to use in the whole room. I wouldn't stay there again.

convenient location

The location was great since we went to Balboa Park several times. The continental breakfast was very appreciated. We were very glad to have a microwave oven and refrigerator that worked. The beds were comfortable, but fat pillows are uncomfortable. We didn't ask for flatter ones. The on-location parking was nice, but there was a brick holding a security door open, not very secure in my mind. The room was fine, just poorly maintained. The sliding mirror doors to the closet were installed wrong and looked very wierd. The clock radio didn't work right and in five days was not replaced with a working one. The caulking around the tub was poorly done. The toilet took three to five minutes to refill. One faucet was installed crooked. When the middle dresser was closed, there was a big gap on the lower right side. We could also tell where the vacuum rubbed against the dresser, leaving marks. The curtains didn't close with the pulls (cords). We had to reach up and try to pull them closed. The tread mill in the fitness room was out of order.

We had a great time!

This hotel is great perfect location and great prices. We had a blast and would always come back and stay at this hotel. If you are traveling with family this might not be the place since it does have a party atmosphere.

Good Experience

When we arrived we were put in a two queen and hide-a-bed room. Because there was five of us, we felt it was too small. They offered us a 3 bedroom 2 bath condo about 1800 square feet for 20.00 more per night. It was very old, but charming. Beds could have been more comfortable, but they were clean. Bathrooms are old fashioned but clean. It is in a nice quiet area in a residential but old downtown. Continental breakfast was good. Pool is very nice! If you want to stay in a hotel that has Old Town San Diego feel - this is great. The entrance of hotel is grand, but the rooms do not resemble intial impression. Recommend downstairs room by pool or the condo. Off season is best. Hope this helps. :)

Weekend Away

We've stayed at the Lafayette many times and had our wedding reception there last year. The service is great and the location is fantastic -- close to the 163 but not right on the highway like Hotel Circle. It's an old but beautiful place! And you can't beat the waffles at breakfast....

Lafayette Hotel

This hotel is good for the price. Nice pool but don't get a room on the front street, too noisy. It's close to the rte 163 which brings you right to downtown in about 5 minutes. Bar was inexpensive and close to supermarkets if you need them but I won't go to far from the beaten path, not the safest looking location. Bed ok and breakfast was not bad. The staff seemed friendly but I didn't have to deal with them for more than the usual.

Time-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

The rte 163 was about a mile away and it took me straight into downtown San Diego, gaslamp district, within 5 minutes.
