Historic San Diego hotel gives guest a glimpse of the past

Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Horton Grand Hotel is the modern incarnation of two Victorian hotels that opened in the late 1880s. The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Highlights
  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Unique Victorian-style guest rooms feature hand-carved armoires, fireplaces
  • Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter
  • New Orleans-style open-air courtyard
Location

Just two blocks from the Horton Grand Hotel, Westfield Horton Plaza is a hub of activity. Live music and performances take place all summer, and public art adds an eclectic sensibility. More than 100 stores and services are anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom.

Rooms

Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Follow in their footsteps by staying in one of the hotel's 132 guest rooms and 24 grand rooms. City views and Victorian-inspired furnishings establish unmistakable sense of place. All rooms feature fireplaces, some have French doors that lead to private balconies overlooking the hotel courtyard. Wi-Fi Internet access is available (fees apply).

Features

After a long day of business or sightseeing, unwind with a drink at The Palace Bar at the Horton Grand Hotel. Be sure to stop by the front lobby and say hello to Sunshine, a life-size papier-mache horse from the saddle shop that previously occupied the building's ground floor.

Hit the Gaslamp Quarter, home to approximately 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Just across the street from the Horton Grand Hotel, FLUXX nightclub has hosted an amazing roster of A-list celebrities. For something slightly more low-key, Cafe 222 is a great place for people watching over breakfast or lunch.

Great location, Great hotel!

Hotel is beautiful and has tons of character! There's a restaurant on site with great food. The location is fabulous and in the heart of the Gaslamp and close to everything! The staff there was incredible - Paula and Nick at the front desk were great, friendly and very helpful. I would come back to this hotel again. The courtyard is beautiful and the balconies in the rooms were perfect for getting some sun and have a cocktail!

Not-a-chain

Went to San Diego for a convention and didn't want to stay at the over priced chain. This was a great compromise! The location was perfect- only a stone's throw from the convention center, and near all the gaslamp restaurants and sites (without all the noise). Was even able to walk from the Amtrak station here, which was perfect. The hotel does have a restaurant and advertises room service, but there was no menu? The two free water bottles per day come in quite handy, but I only got them the first two days... it could be I read that wrong. Free wifi and a flat screen tv were nice. There was a fireplace, but alas, too warm to use it. Overall, a very nice stay, friendly staff and a unique spot- not chain like at all!

Ok for the price.

The hotel was ok. It had a feel that I'm not used to. It was kind of cool in that aspect but the room could have been a little cleaner.

Perfect...except for one thing...

I loved this hotel, and I'm glad I picked it. I stayed on a Saturday night because I had a race early Sunday. I loved being able to just walk right aside the hotel and have plenty of food options - the Gas Lamp was so lively and I could walk to Petco Park or the ocean view by the convention center. The hotel look & feel was unique and fun, more interesting than the boxy/business trip hotels that I'm used to. Only one problem... my wife had trouble falling asleep because of the noise outside, which was apparently a club across the street :( This hotel must hate that club, judging by some other reviews. I had no problem with the noise, and I guess a little outside noise makes me feel like I'm in a city cause I barely noticed it, or maybe I was really tired. Anyways, pick this hotel, and if you are a light sleeper, request a room on the other side of the hotel from the club.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

If you have a race that starts in this area, or are going to the convention center, you can walk there from this hotel, in addition to tons of restaurants & shopping - I believe parking is $25 a day at the hotel, but that was worth it for me not having to drive around looking for parking

Great Historical Hotel

The Horton Grand is a unique Victorian hotel located in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. I have stayed there on four occsions and the rooms are always clean and well furnished for the period. I particularly liked the pull-chain toilets in the bathroom.
