The Holiday Inn Express San Diego Downtown is located on the edge of the Gaslamp District, arguably the city's most happening neighborhood. Unhappy Not Going Back

When I checked in, I was told they did not have a room for me, even though I had a confirmation number and reservation. But they could accommodate me if I chose to upgrade to a higher priced room...bait & switch??? We were not told about happy hour and stumbled upon it the second day we were there, but it was 5 minutes past the designated time & we were refused a drink. Parking is hideous, $16 a night in a VERY CRAMPED parking structure. The bathroom is in dire need of a remodel, it was cramped and very small. The balcony had a chair in which to sit on, but the sliding glass door was bolted shut, so the balcony was of no value. The location was close to Balboa Park, where we spent the majority of our time.

I was there 1/21-25, 2013 for a business trip. This was a last minute booking thus I paid a full price ($159/night). Hotel does not have an on-site restaurant. Don’t expect to order room services. Business travelers may want to note this. No on-site fitness center, either. Difficult for me to stay there for a week & can’t stretch. Chair height in room does not match desk height. Staffs helped me to fix this. An unforgettable episode was that 2am 1/26 morning, fire alarm went off. Everyone was OUTSIDE hotel for 15-min. Although staffs are friendly (except the one when I checked in), I will go elsewhere next time for business travel. Breakfast was good.

Amazing and friendly staff
I was in San Diego for a conference at the Convention Center. I walked to the Convention Center most days without any problems. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. I told several of them that during my 3 night stay. I would definitely recommend staying at the Holiday Inn Express Downtown.

We had a wonderful stay in San Diego, this hotel was very nice, on the older side but very clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast was awesome, much more than expected and the staff fabulous. They have a shuttle bus that will take and pick you up almost any where you want to go, which made sight seeing wonderful since parking is very difficult and expensive. Would stay here again.

Overall this place was pretty good the breakfast was awesome, I don't think I would stay here again though because of the downtown loacation not the best place if you want to go site seeing and you have to pay an extra16 dollars a night to park.

Rundown and in need of a revamp
Our experience was not very good. The staff was friendly enough, but the overall experience was very subpar. The look and feel of the hotel was worn and rundown. The ancient elevators were frustratingly slow and the parking facilities were annoying and cost $16 per night.

nice and comfy hotel
everything except the pool was great. breakfasts were decent, the room was decent (no microwave though). everything was clean. the pool was just really small and shallow. i would stay here again though.
