"Nestled in paradise", BUT...

The opening states that Americas Best Value Inn (aka Padre Trail Inn) is in an "undiscovered quality hotel nestled in paradise". I agree that this hotel is nestled in paradise alright, but not so much on the quality. . . My friend and I ventered to San Diego last minute. I rely on grate rates through Orbitz and quickly clicked on the first link which was ONE of the least expensive places. We were greeted at the hotel with a warm smile, but the actual room had a list of faults. Our room had holes in the ceiling, a dirty toilet/shower, the water pressure was worse than my bathroom sink (and we had to lean under shower head to bathe), the beds were rock hard, the TV had snow on all channels expect for MTV, and even though we laughed this off we could not handle the ants in the bathroom when we returned from dinner! Once we asked for a room change the same friendly smile gave us one with no questions asked. The only fault to this room was the same uncomfortable beds, and the clogged toilet. We left with lots of bites on our bodies, perhaps from the beach or from the beds?? Although this place was quite the experience, the location was grand! We walked to the historic district several times and even stayed an extra night due to the location. However, I was quite peeved that they did not indicate that it would be ten dollars more than what Orbitz had offered AND with the whole complaining there was no discounts offered. I would never stay at this place again, nor would I recommend this to families, couples, or even college students unless they can laugh off negative situations. This experience has left me to always, always read what others have to say about their experiences!

You get what you pay for

Upon our arrival we were greeted by a clerk. Our reservation hadn't arrived yet. He took my cell number and said he would call as soon as it arrived via fax. He was helpful with telling us a great place for dinner, right across the street. Great Mexican food! We went to our room to drop our things off. Next we took the short walk to try the Mexican food. He was right, it was great. The clerk never phoned, so we went back to check on our reservation. The fax was there, he just hadn't phoned (I hate broken promises). We weren't surprised the room wasn't big or updated. We were looking for something inexpensive for a night. It was clean enough for the night, but I was glad we were only staying a night. When we returned later in the evening the smell of marijuna was ripe around our room. Not long after we woke up the same smell lingered around our room. We quickly got ready and went to check out. There was a small place to order breakfast. Our waiter didn't speak English well, but managed to take our order. We think he was the cook too. Only one other table of customers in the place. Food was fine but the service wasn't. We paid our meal and left. Lastly we went to fill up our ice chest. No ice. We asked one of the hotel clerks if there was another machine. He sent my husband to the kitchen and the cook had him do it himself. We enjoyed San Diego however we won't be going back to the this hotel anytime soon. My husband reminded me, you get what you pay for. I'll spend more money next time...

Okay

I was kind of disappointed with my stay. It stated free Wi-Fi and it did not have it. When I asked about it, the person at the front desk told me to come to the lobby and I would be able to get it. I don't want to hang out in a lobby to get my free Wi-Fi. The rooms were very small, and the cleaning was terriable. Everything felt like it hadn't seen fabric softner in years.

Ok stay

Check in was quick and easy. The staff was friendly upon checkin and checkout. The parking lot was situated strangely so that I had to do a 3 point turn to get out. The rooms and bedding were clean, but very outdated. The bathroom was functional, but the shower was a bit small. The hotel is close to a MTS transit station which made it easy to get downtown. Overall the stay was adequate. I would visit again if in a pinch (which I was this time).

Not a bad experience.

Nice low price, centrally located, friendly receptionist when we checked in, neat and clean hotel room. The only problem we encountered was on the second evening there when we returned after a full day at Sea World. Upon entering the bathroom, I saw three long, black, curly hairs stuck in the bath towels. I returned them to the woman who was working at the front desk late on the evening of July 8 and was promptly given some new ones. However, she looked at me as if I was attempting some deceptive maneuver... maybe trying to get them to lower the charges because of the inconvenience of having to return the towels. I would have been satisfied with a simple "Sorry about the inconvenience". Despite the great price, it might be worth spending twenty dollars more per night and upgrading to a different hotel.

Good for money saving travelers

I had some time off and decided spontaneously to go to San Diego for 2 days (one night). I didn't know much about San Diego or where to stay, so I chose a hotel based on price, reviews, and location on a map (and took into consideration things I read about neighborhoods online). The room was very spacious and comfortable, though old. In spite of the old interior, things appeared clean. The air conditioning needed some time before it cooled the room, but did its job. Also, the person who worked at the counter, though he was cordial, did seem a bit questionable/creepy. With respect to location, it is an excellent location. Very close to Old Town San Diego, and close driving distance to downtown, Balboa Park, and highway. Overall, it was decent for the location and good for the price I paid. If the room had been $15/20 more (and I had booked earlier instead of last minute), I might not recommend it, because there are nicer hotels for a little bit more in the area.
