Not great, not horrible.
We weren't at the hotel often, but when we were it was very easy to hear when everyone else was there too. Located right off the freeway, the traffic noise is inevitable, but the softball game across the road in the morning was unexpected. Guests' car alarms going off and people generally being noisy late at night and early morning were not the hotel's fault, but still made the stay less than enjoyable. All the outlets in the room were horrible! We had a hard time finding an outlet that was not loose so we could charge our phones. That was a bad point. A weird rip on my comforter with a stain around it weirded me out too. We would have liked a microwave in addition to the mini fridge to heat up our food, but there was none. The location was amazing for us, right across from mission bay and a short drive to downtown. That was a redeeming point. Staff was friendly and prompt. No problem there. I would recommend if you are not expecting much from your hotel other than a place to sleep and shower or take a break during the day's activities, which is what we used it for.

You get what you pay for
Upon our arrival we were greeted by a clerk. Our reservation hadn't arrived yet. He took my cell number and said he would call as soon as it arrived via fax. He was helpful with telling us a great place for dinner, right across the street. Great Mexican food! We went to our room to drop our things off. Next we took the short walk to try the Mexican food. He was right, it was great. The clerk never phoned, so we went back to check on our reservation. The fax was there, he just hadn't phoned (I hate broken promises). We weren't surprised the room wasn't big or updated. We were looking for something inexpensive for a night. It was clean enough for the night, but I was glad we were only staying a night. When we returned later in the evening the smell of marijuna was ripe around our room. Not long after we woke up the same smell lingered around our room. We quickly got ready and went to check out. There was a small place to order breakfast. Our waiter didn't speak English well, but managed to take our order. We think he was the cook too. Only one other table of customers in the place. Food was fine but the service wasn't. We paid our meal and left. Lastly we went to fill up our ice chest. No ice. We asked one of the hotel clerks if there was another machine. He sent my husband to the kitchen and the cook had him do it himself. We enjoyed San Diego however we won't be going back to the this hotel anytime soon. My husband reminded me, you get what you pay for. I'll spend more money next time...

Good for money saving travelers
I had some time off and decided spontaneously to go to San Diego for 2 days (one night). I didn't know much about San Diego or where to stay, so I chose a hotel based on price, reviews, and location on a map (and took into consideration things I read about neighborhoods online). The room was very spacious and comfortable, though old. In spite of the old interior, things appeared clean. The air conditioning needed some time before it cooled the room, but did its job. Also, the person who worked at the counter, though he was cordial, did seem a bit questionable/creepy. With respect to location, it is an excellent location. Very close to Old Town San Diego, and close driving distance to downtown, Balboa Park, and highway. Overall, it was decent for the location and good for the price I paid. If the room had been $15/20 more (and I had booked earlier instead of last minute), I might not recommend it, because there are nicer hotels for a little bit more in the area.

Savvy Hotel Shopper
"Nestled in paradise", BUT...
The opening states that Americas Best Value Inn (aka Padre Trail Inn) is in an "undiscovered quality hotel nestled in paradise". I agree that this hotel is nestled in paradise alright, but not so much on the quality. . . My friend and I ventered to San Diego last minute. I rely on grate rates through Orbitz and quickly clicked on the first link which was ONE of the least expensive places. We were greeted at the hotel with a warm smile, but the actual room had a list of faults. Our room had holes in the ceiling, a dirty toilet/shower, the water pressure was worse than my bathroom sink (and we had to lean under shower head to bathe), the beds were rock hard, the TV had snow on all channels expect for MTV, and even though we laughed this off we could not handle the ants in the bathroom when we returned from dinner! Once we asked for a room change the same friendly smile gave us one with no questions asked. The only fault to this room was the same uncomfortable beds, and the clogged toilet. We left with lots of bites on our bodies, perhaps from the beach or from the beds?? Although this place was quite the experience, the location was grand! We walked to the historic district several times and even stayed an extra night due to the location. However, I was quite peeved that they did not indicate that it would be ten dollars more than what Orbitz had offered AND with the whole complaining there was no discounts offered. I would never stay at this place again, nor would I recommend this to families, couples, or even college students unless they can laugh off negative situations. This experience has left me to always, always read what others have to say about their experiences!
