Not a good experience.

Really bad. It´s a Hostel and not a Hotel. Is in downtown, but not where things are happening, mor next to administrative office buildings. You don´t hav a private bathroom and it´s not very clean. My room was on the third floor and you could open the window and the roof is right there so you can go from room to room through the roof. Unsafe feeling! People shouting and slamming doors all night long. They offer WiFi, and they don´t have it, Been in San Diego befor in better hotels for the same rate. Not a good experience.

Good for Economy

This hotel/hostel is great for its context - cheap. It's just within walking distance of gaslamp and costs ~$50 a night. It's not "ghetto" or anything. Just old and small. The area that it's in is still high end and plenty safe (by Karl Strauss). We actually live in the Del Mar area, but are still a ~20 taxi cab from the coaster. In the end, taking the coaster + taxi - round trip - actually costs us more than using this hostel.

Everything I need

The lobby is beautiful and spacious. Wifi is free. Nice cafe for breakfast and lunch on premises as well as YMCA fitness center. Room was small but I expected that. Bed and pillow were comfortable (better than I expected). Would have liked a chair at the desk rather than a hassock. Best deal in town.

Great for what it is

This hotel/hostel is not fancy; the rooms are small, and overall, it is a bit run down. BUT, it is clean and comfortable and convenient and inexpensive for downtown San Diego. I was attending a conference and just needed a place to sleep. 500 West provided all that I needed. When I arrived, I noted that there was no chair for the desk in my room. When I mentioned this to the front desk, they took care of it. Other than that, I had no problems! The shared bathrooms were kept quite clean. (You lock yourself in to the bathroom for privacy while you are using it.)

Not A Hotel

This is not a hotel...or like any hostel I have ever stayed in. They offer weekly and monthly rates, so many of the "guests" are in fact residents. Very nice folks I'm sure, but maybe not folks with whom you want to share a bathroom. This was NOT made clear on Orb**z or on the "hotel" website. Also, my electronic key to my room stopped working while I was in the shower down the hall (due to a low battery in the door). This left me mostly undressed, wet, and in the hall for about 25 minutes until staff 1) believed me enough to come take a look and 2) figured out how to open the door while telling me what I should have done to avoid the situation. Location is great...right downtown and convenient to public transport.

Cheapest deal New Year's Eve in downtown San Diego

$52 for a small room. The YMCA built it in 1920 so the clean private bath rooms are down the hall like a Hostel. Great location right on Broadway in-between Gaslamp District & Little Italy. Trolley, train and bus lines nearby. Onsite gym, free wifi, small TV, safe had security guard, good breakfast cafe, friendly staff, no bed bugs in our room. Our room looked out onto internal courtyard so no street noise. I spent twice that on drinks. It was a nice alternative to driving home. Parking ranges from $10-$15 in nearby parking lots and garages. There is street parking but downtown but is tricky.

Great Value

This hotel is great value for your money, given its prime location just a few blocks from the Gaslamp district. As a single female traveler, I felt safe walking in the area after dark to get to/from restaurants. However, one needs to be aware in advance of what the hotel offers: private rooms, shared bathrooms (hair dryer available at reception desk).
