Family-friendly Los Angeles upscale beachfront destination resort hotel

Sea breezes flows naturally at the Terranea Resort located on the uncrowded tip of the Los Angeles Palos Verdes peninsula, recalling a time of wild coastal bluffs dotted with haciendas. This large-scale luxury destination resort channels this in grand style on the singular spot of untamed coastline between L.A. and Orange counties. Unlike California of the 1800s, the Terranea Resort guests spend hours under the calming rapture of aromatic massages, delighting kids with the saltwater pool and indulging in menus designed for 21st century families.

Area description
Poised along one of Southern California's most scenic and coveted coastlines, Terranea is set on the spectacular Palos Verdes Peninsula, a stunning and irreplaceable site with unobstructed views overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island.

Dining

Catalina Kitchen
Experience a culinary adventure throughout the day at Catalina Kitchen where it's all about good food, at any time with kids, friends or colleagues. Dine indoors or on the patio with its wide open space and views of the ocean and the adjacent Resort pool. Enjoy a full-service breakfast, occasionally in conjunction with hot and cold buffet offerings. Throughout the day and evening the menu broadens into California market/Mediterranean cuisine with elements of Spanish, French Riviera, Greek and Southern Italian flavors, including specialty pizzas served during dinner. Don't miss the extraordinary Sunday Brunch, complete with a kids buffet.
mar'sel
Open for Dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Reservations are recommended. Terranea's signature restaurant, mar'sel, (Spanish for sea and French for salt,) is a destination in and of itself. This classic Southern California Oceanfront restaurant has a warm residential feel complementing a menu reflecting a simple, modern representation of California cuisine. Herbs and produce are grown on property in the chef's herb and vegetable garden. An emphasis is placed on procuring ingredients from the area, resulting in a menu that is truly Californian. Enjoy a hand-crafted cocktail at mar'sel. Indoor and outdoor seating take full advantage of mar'sel's stand-alone locale overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Outdoor diners can bask in the warmth of a stone fire pit in this dramatic setting. An intimate Private Dining Room with seating for 16 offers stunning views and the perfect venue for that special occasion.
Ceilo - Adult Pool Bar
Open Daily for Lunch & Afternoon Cocktails | No end to sun-drenched offerings at Terranea, the casual eatery at Cielo Point is adjacent to the adult pool at the head of the Discovery Trail, making it convenient to explore the adjacent areas and return to the Resort in a short walk. For a nibble or a refreshing beverage, menu items are meant to cool, refresh and satisfy. Local hikers can enjoy Discovery Trail Refreshments adjacent to Cielo Point pool. Even canine friends can enjoy the view as doggie resting places are located next to the trail.
Lobby Bar
Open Daily | The Lobby Bar, Living Room and Terrace at Terranea are the welcoming spots of the Resort. Indoor and outdoor seating offers some of the most breathtaking views. Beverage offerings include classic cocktails with a modern twist, wine by the glass emphasizing California wines, and micro brewed regional and international beer varieties. Enjoy these ideal settings for a pre-dinner meeting, a social gathering spot, a place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the afternoon or to relax with an after-dinner nightcap.
Nelsons
Restaurant and Bar | Open Daily for Lunch & Dinner | A particularly scenic and noteworthy dining option is Nelson's located directly above the Pacific. With a view to the Point Vicente Lighthouse, Nelson's offers one of the most scenic locations from which to enjoy a meal in a casual setting. Menu offerings include regional favorites presented in a casual atmosphere while you relax by outdoor fire pits and soak in the incredible natural beauty of the coastline. Enjoy a wide array of beverages including California wines, micro brewed beers and specialty blended drinks. Canine friends are accommodated outside with a doggie resting place and water to wet their whistle. Nelson's is furnished with items using recycled material - the bar countertop is made of recycled wine bottles. Nelson's is a tribute to Mike Nelson, the character played by Lloyd Bridges in the famed Sea Hunt television series.
sea beans - Coffee Boutique
Open Daily for Breakfast & Lunch | This coffee bar, located off the front drive, features gourmet coffees with a full array of espresso drinks, organic teas, pastries, muffins and Danish - all made in house. Throughout the day, enjoy pressed sandwiches, homemade gelato, fruits, salads and wraps. An assortment of beverages and snacks are available for purchase to go.
Spa Cafe
Open Daily for Breakfast & Lunch | This tranquil and serene setting invites one to relax and enjoy freshly prepared foods, juices and drinks.
Terranea Grill
Open Daily | Adjacent to the Resort pool, The Terranea Grill offers poolside service throughout the day. This open-air dining features informal fare delivered to covered patio tables or to guests relaxing by the pool. Grilled and casual meals and a wide assortment of specialty drinks and non-alcoholic beverages are served under the sun all day long. Menu offerings include such delectable items as Crab Cobb Salad and Chipotle Cheese Quesadillas. Children will enjoy special items such as Cornflake Crusted Chicken Tenders and of course, fresh fruit smoothies. The abundant seating at the curved bar is an inviting location for an end-of-day cocktail with associates or friends.

A treasure close to LA

You feel like your're at an Italian villa or somewhere in Europe..not one hour from LA! Must get an ocean View Room. Staff could not be nicer. Cliffside easy walks are lovely. Nelsons at sunset for a drink is sweet. Adult pool very nice unless someone asks for music too loud; then jut go in a bit & say its too loud - easy! Adult pool has gorgeous firepit. Go into town and eat at Zazoo's for finest filet mingnon. Only issue is spa - I know mot LA prices and $165 an hour is very very high. Most are about $150 for 80 minutes. Otherwise, perfect!

Great weekend getaway

This coast resort is off the beaten path, hidden away behind the Palos Verdes mountains, which is a good thing - the hills shield it from the parts of Los Angeles that I wanted to get away from. The ocean view is spectacular, the spa is expensive but worth it, and the hiking trails provide easy outdoor exercise and great views of the hills and the water. When the checkin line got a little long (four people) the manager came out and passed out champagne flutes. No one complained about the wait. The room was very clean and the beds very comfortable. Only one spot on the carpet detracted from the overall impression. The HVAC was quiet and effective. The breakfast buffet was pricey but lavish - good value if you have seconds.

Terrenea Resort in Ranchos Palos Verdes

I was able to hike and sit on the beach and enjoy beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. Would have loved to enjoy more but time and other committments prevented.
