Truly Forgetable

Next to a seedy nightclub that rocked out at 2am. The plunger next to the toilet was all I needed to know about the place. The pool looked like it had been under repair since the last ice age. Need I say more?

worst stay ever

ok i usually don't do this but for the money i paid for this room i expected for the toilet to be working it backed up every since time and was leaking, for the key to open the door to my room more than once before having to have it re programed THREE TIMES, for there not to be snot on the wall DISGUSTING, for the ironing board not to be held together with tape.... yes tape.... like i said i usually take things in stride and try not to let things get to me but this just had too many things go wrong....

just OK

when I got in the room, around 10 flies were hanging around, I spent whole night killing them all, I bet some of the flies egg was left in the room, that's why there're so many of them. Breakfast doesn't provide napkins? It's a minor thing, but, it's like a no brainer.

Montery, CA

An alright motel, close to hot spots and Highway 1. Very clean, quiet and restful. Not too much on the amenities but does have a small indoor, heated pool. Continental breakfast is poor and only 2 tables. Coffee is poor.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

An absolute must is to take highway 1 south to Big Sur. The most beautiful drive in California. Stay away from the "famous" 17-Mile Drive in Montery. They charge you $9.25 and it's mostly residential. Some very nice spots along the coast but not worth the time. You will see much more beauty on the "Free" Highway 1 drive. Everything in Cannery Row is touristy and expensive. A real let-down. However, there is an Irish Pub beneath the Sushi, Japanese Restaurant at the Pier that is a good buy with really good food and great atmosphere. Prices much more reasonable.

El Castell - Aug Review

The amenities were fine for the price. The outside hallway was over lighted. Our first night was a difficult one. Management did fix the problem the next day and it was no problem

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

Lots of specialty shops and a retail mall within a 15 minute drive. Prices were reasonable considering this was tourist season.

Good Deal

My husband and I have stayed at the El Castell every September for the Jazz Festival and we have started staying there for other trips to Monterey. It is a basic, clean motel. We are alway too busy to spend a lot of time in a motel room and we don't need a fancy motel room when all we do is shower and sleep there. The staff is nice and accommodating.
