Old-fashioned hotel with modern seaside elegance
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean since 1926, the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla deftly mixes old and new.  With its pink stucco hue, the property is known as the pink lady of La Jolla. The Mediterranean-style boutique hotel offers luxurious accommodations and amenities and enjoys walking distance to La Jolla village for some of the best shopping in Southern California. Three on-site restaurants, including the Art Deco Sky Room, provide guests with ample dining options.
Highlights
  • Historic buildings hearken back to another era
  • Marvel at views of the Pacific Ocean
  • Enjoy live music several nights a week in La Sala Lounge
Rooms

La Valencia Hotel offers 112 rooms, including nine suites, richly appointed with custom furnishings and luxury textiles. Each room comes standard with a plasma TV, Egyptian cotton linens and in-room safe, with many including a patio or balcony. Guests receive complimentary high-speed Internet access. Wi-Fi Internet access is also available (fees apply).

Features

The La Valencia Hotel has received AAA's four diamond award and was selected to the 2010 Best in the World Top 100 list by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. Today, the hotel retains many of the same design elements and characteristics that became trademarks of the hotel in the 1920s. The hotel developed a sustainability program in late 2009.

Three on-site restaurants provide multiple options for dining. The Sky Room, an Art Deco masterpiece, is by far the swankiest of the bunch, offering exotic spins on Californian fresh cuisine. The Whaling Bar & Grill is more casual with a bar and TVs and The Mediterranean Room provides fantastic ocean views as well as outdoor dining.

Overall, good

Overall, I thought the hotel was good. The staff was really nice and friendly, maid service was good (twice a day), had a fitness center and a business center, a pool with service, and access to the beach (about a half a mile walk fro the hotel). The only complaints are the rooms are the size of sardine cans, the expense of room service (literally 50 dollars for 4 shrimp and some cheese---- 20 bucks for each + 5 dollar room delivery fee and 20 percent service charge) and parking. It is 29 dollars a night to park, plus you cannot park yourself you have to get a valet to do it (meaning a tip each time you want to use your car). Simple things like ice or silverware you have to call room service, have them bring it to you plus another tip. All surrounding areas in La Jolla are overpriced so be prepared to spend a small fortune. But other than these things it was great.

More to Come

La Valencia continues to explore new renovations, which is done quite well. Cafe Rue is good, although we missed the ambiance of the Whaling bar. Look forward to experiencing the new lounge area under construction, now.

Beautiful historic hotel

I have always wanted to stay at this hotel. It was beautiful with great views. My only complaint is that when we first checked in at 6pm, the AC in the room was not working. We had to leave for dinner and the front desk assured us it would be fixed before we got back that night. When we retuned at 11:30, the AC still wasn't working and the guy we spoke to was gone for the day. We had to wait for a maintenance guy to come and confirm that it wasn't working. They did accommodate us and switch us to another room, but by then it was after midnight and all we wanted to do was sleep. We had breakfast on the terrace the next day and the view was gorgeous and the food was delicious.

Solid, not extraordinary

A good hotel. Very confusing to get around, the slowest elevator on the planet (there is basically only one). But good food at the restaurant, good staff, clean and attentive.

Great ending to a business trip

La Valencia Hotel is beautiful with so much charm. My husband and I loved the amenities; the sheets and towels were top quality. The restaurant was amazing! We ate their signature crabcake as an appetizer every day!!! The hotel is located in the best spot on La Jolla. There's so much to do. Can't wait to go back again and again. Very sad to leave!

Great hotel

Beautiful room, very comfortable and wonderful location. The staff was friendly and helpful. Everything was going great until we returned from the pool to our room to find the maid cleaning our room eventhou we would be checking out within the hour. I mentioned she would only have to do this all over again; she said she was almost finished. So my husband and I stood in our bathing suits while she made the bed and vacuumed. Awkward! Also, I was not comfortable with the fact she had to move my purse and my husband's wallet to do her cleaning while we were swimming.
