Old-fashioned hotel with modern seaside elegance
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean since 1926, the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla deftly mixes old and new.  With its pink stucco hue, the property is known as the pink lady of La Jolla. The Mediterranean-style boutique hotel offers luxurious accommodations and amenities and enjoys walking distance to La Jolla village for some of the best shopping in Southern California. Three on-site restaurants, including the Art Deco Sky Room, provide guests with ample dining options.
Highlights
  • Historic buildings hearken back to another era
  • Marvel at views of the Pacific Ocean
  • Enjoy live music several nights a week in La Sala Lounge
Rooms

La Valencia Hotel offers 112 rooms, including nine suites, richly appointed with custom furnishings and luxury textiles. Each room comes standard with a plasma TV, Egyptian cotton linens and in-room safe, with many including a patio or balcony. Guests receive complimentary high-speed Internet access. Wi-Fi Internet access is also available (fees apply).

Features

The La Valencia Hotel has received AAA's four diamond award and was selected to the 2010 Best in the World Top 100 list by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. Today, the hotel retains many of the same design elements and characteristics that became trademarks of the hotel in the 1920s. The hotel developed a sustainability program in late 2009.

All guests enjoy complimentary access to a heated outdoor pool and an on-site fitness facility with cardiovascular equipment and free weights. Guests also receive a complimentary shoe shine every night. The hotel offers in-room spa treatments (fees apply) and 24-hour laundry service (fees apply).

Three on-site restaurants provide multiple options for dining. The Sky Room, an Art Deco masterpiece, is by far the swankiest of the bunch, offering exotic spins on Californian fresh cuisine. The Whaling Bar & Grill is more casual with a bar and TVs and The Mediterranean Room provides fantastic ocean views as well as outdoor dining.

Wedding get away

Was at the hotel for a wedding. La Valencia was very close to everything in La Jolla. Just a block from the ocean and a block from great dining experiences and shopping. The hotel setting was very picturesque overlooking a park and the Pacific Ocean

Geat hotel

This hotel was in the perfect location. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. I would stay here again! My only complaints: Small bathroom. The water never got "hot"--always had a luke warm shower. The water in the newly tiled shower doesn't drain well--should have been designed on a slight slant for the water to run to the drain. The shower water gets all over the floor outside so you'll need to cover the entire bathroom floor with a towel. Lastly, it was obvious our floor was being renovated (prob the reason we paid what we paid) but the doors to the rooms being renovated were left wide open at times. It was creepy and god forbid children were ever walking around with out supervision and wandered in them=disaster! The rooms being renovated should have been kept securely locked.

Wonderful - but stay away from construction (Jan 2013)

First off, we stayed there in Jan 2013, but Orb isn't giving this year as an option to select, so I'll select 2012. For the most part, we really loved this hotel. La Valencia has a very accommodating and friendly staff and our standard king size room was lovely. My boyfriend and I went for romantic weekend together, that was only interrupted by an incessant drilling noise that awoke us each morning. We discovered that it was coming from the floor below us, the fifth floor, where the hotel is undergoing extensive renovations/construction. We were not compensated in any way for the disturbance and it was unfortunate that this left such a sour taste after what would've been a perfect stay. I still recommend the La Valencia hotel, but I would urge you to insist on staying a great distance away from the construction.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The Cottage is a wonderful breakfast spot, only about a ten minute walk away, which is a perfect opportunity to enjoy La Jolla's great weather. Holly Ann is a wonderful server! She was friendly, chatting with us about our stay, remembering us when she saw us the next day, and splitting our meals onto separate plates for us at no extra charge.

Promotions?

The hotel was great, but when I signed up to stay there, the promotion items included, "free valet service and a bottle of wine". The valet service was free, but the bottle of wine was not included. I questioned the staff about this and they were completely stunned by the claim. I allowed it to be dismissed because the price was so low, and the value of the stay was so high. This is a must pick hotel to stay in if you can get the room price for $185/night or less.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The Living Room Coffee Shop is a staple of San Diego and there is one located about 200 yds from the hotel. They have great service, food, drinks, and as important as anything in La Jolla, a water view of the ocean from on top of the cove.

Wonderful...great food, location, view and entertainment, my complaint was that the room we stayed in was very small. Also there is a restaurant on the 10th floor we were not told about. Found out the last day and we had already eaten. That was disappointing.

Fabulous hotel in fabulous La Jolla

We spent two nights in la Valencia as part of a three week holiday in California and wished we had spent more time there. The staff were extremely helpful and our upgraded villa was perfect. This was a large, well equipped room with a comfortable balcony overlooking the pool and the bathroom was enormous with a spa bath and walk in shower. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who likes classic elegance and good service.

Perfect Scenic/Lovers' location

Extremely gracious staff welcomed us and assissted us throughout our stay. The Hotel has that certain charm and character that only comes from a classic historical property which has received excellent care and maintenance. The "feel" at La Valencia takes one back to wonderful memories.
