Nice Little Hideaway

Estancia La Jolla is a nice little hotel with pretty gardens that reminded us of being in the Carribean (minus the scorching temperatures). It's not in downtown La Jolla, but it is in a good location to get to both the town to the south and beaches to the north. The rooms are nicely decorated, comfy bed with a cozy wool throw blanket, Starbucks coffee in the room, bathroom was clean and spacious. Overall very nice.

Torrey Pines State Park beach. Go as far north as you can and still be in the park and go to that beach. There are changing rooms, rinse off showers, a little river flowing into the ocean, and it's relatively uncrowded. We did hear about a riptide somewhere, so stay close the the entrance and the little river.

Great stuff nearby, once you find it!

Part of the charm of this hotel makes it difficult to navigate at first. The gorgeous foliage tends to cover all the signs you need to figure out where you are going. Once you know the lay of the land, it's much easier. Beds and pillows are very comfortable and I love the salt water pool. Spa is expensive for the facility, but the massage and facial were top notch. Great service, okay facility. There is a $17 amenities fee a day, for the wi-fi (which is spotty), the work out room (SMALL) and the two bottles of water in your room. The $20/day to park was a surprise at checkout (and not a happy one). I loved the Salk Institute next door and spent a lot of time at the gliderport. There is no easy way down to the beach, but it is worth the hike when you figure it out. Be prepared for the nudists...

sign up for the daily free tour at the Salk Institute. It is at noon M-F, but you need to sign up online, two days in advance. I LOVED it!

family getaway

the hotel was beautiful but lacked the usual 4 star amenities such as mini bar, gift shop, etc. Overpriced restaurants and food at every turn. Pool staff and front desk personnel are a dream. If you like to hike, getting around is manageable. Downtown taxi ride, etc. adds up without a car.

Great value, some improvements could be suggested

My first room reeked of cigar smoke. No problem, that happens sometimes at any hotel. I was quickly moved to the adjoining room but found the sink stopped and the toilet running. No problem again, that happens at any hotel. I made a call, left for dinner and found the problems fixed. The halls are a maze. After three or four tours of the hotel grounds, I found myself familiar with the layout and I was helping others who were lost. I think that a map at each corner with a "you are here" dot would be helpful. I even rescued a hapless convention attendee who was far from where she wanted to be. I found the pool and two of the restaurants. I'm sure there are other joys that I missed out on during my stay. That's ok. It is a very nice place and a good value for the money. It was quiet, clean, safe and happy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa to friend or family. Thanks!
