Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa in Anaheim is a luxury resort displaying marvelous American Craftsman architecture. This style of design flourished during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and it's both elegant and rustic. There are more than 1,000 rooms at this tranquil hotel, which offers pool, courtyard and theme park views. The Grand Californian offers a water-lover's paradise, with a large swimming pool, a water slide that looks like a redwood tree, two smaller pools, and a pool just for kids. Several ballrooms and meeting spaces, an elaborate spa and fitness facility, and a gift shop round out the full hotel experience. Guests won't be short on dining options, with two lounges, a snack bar, the family-oriented Storyteller's Cafe, and the first-class restaurant Napa Rose all on-site.

Neighborhood
The Grand Californian looks out on Disneyland and is right next to Disney California Adventure. Disneyland, which opened in 1955, is packed with both cutting-edge and traditional rides and shows, and Disney California Adventure recreates scenes of California's yesteryears. For instance, a section of the park purposely resembles 1920s Los Angeles. Between these two parks is Downtown Disney, a lavish shopping and dining district with a huge range of activities on offer.
Hints and tips
Guests of the hotel have their own access for entering and exiting Disney California Adventure, making it easy to slip away from the park for a swim or a nap.
During check-in, ask the desk clerk if you can get a complimentary room upgrade - there are occasional openings and it's worth inquiring about.

Great Hotel but consider sticking with the basic rooms

First of all, let me just say that I love this hotel. It is beautiful from the inside out and incredibly comfortable. I usually purchase the bare minimum room (either the standard or woods/garden view). However, this trip I decided to splurge on the premium view, imagining that meant a theme park or at least a downtown disney view. When we checked in, our view was a partial view of the pool, but mainly all you could see was trees and sidewalk which was highly disappointing. So I've decided not to purchase the premium view in the future as the woods/garden view was better (in my opinion). The beds are amazingly comfortable and the location in relation to the parks is unbeatable. The pools and hot tubs are constantly full of children, so I would recommend going to the pool/hot tubs early in the day or trying to use your key card to get into the Disneyland Hotel pool (which wasn't as busy). Expect to pay the additional $30 for valet parking or $15 for self park (if you can actually find a self park spot during busy times).

Great Property, but misleading room descriptions

The hotel is great, with a very convenient location, naturally. However, we were led to believe our room had 2 queen beds and a bunk bed. We were surprised when we checked in to find our room had only 2 queen beds. Not optimal for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. The hotel initially resisted finding us a room with 3 beds, and when they did, it seemed to be off the grid and wasn't cleaned properly for the first day. Turn down service happened on the second half of our stay, which made us wonder what happened the first 2 days. Otherwise, a great stay, and the problem was fixed. I just caution calling the hotel to find out exactly what your room will have for sleeping arrangements.

Exceptionally professional and friendly

Our family just spent 4 days at the Grand Californian at Disneyland, and hands down without a doubt it was the best hotel experience I've ever had. I'm self-employed in the videography business and I've stayed at *many* high-end hotels throughout California: San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, Monterey, San Diego, and more. Production companies want to keep their crew on-hand so large multi-day conferences means the crew stays where the attendees stay instead of an off-site low end hotel. All that to say... I've seen some serious hotels and none have been as great as the Grand Californian. We were greeted at the front gate by a very friendly staff member, gave her our reservation/confirmation number, and a few seconds later when we drove up to the valet area, we were welcomed by name by another very friendly staff member. And yes, from this point forward every single staff member continued to be warm and friendly (and sometimes funny), and went above and beyond what I've ever seen at any hotel before. They were so friendly as we checked in, gave our kids buttons and stickers and a free photo for our birthday boy. Our 5th floor room was very clean, and we had a great view of the pools, though we didn't have any time to visit them - too busy at both parks. The bed linens were clean, the entire room smelled fresh, and the bathroom was spotless. The entire hotel was always buzzing with activity, but even with that much motion, the central lobby area was always inviting. A live pianist (sometimes MIDI controlled but still providing the proper atmosphere), a warm fire, beautiful wood everywhere, etc. And talk about clean - it was nearly perfect everywhere. It was so clean that the few rare occasions I saw trash on the ground I picked it up and threw it away myself, just to help out. Checking out was a breeze. Our bellhop stayed with us as we waited for our car, and he asked us about our stay and how much fun the kids had. He even offered to take our picture for our final group shot together. My only "complaint", if you could even call it that, was that our car came back from parking and the harsh reality of normal life settled back in as I realized how filthy our windshield was. I don't expect them to wash my car (and they may even have that service available, but I didn't ask), but if the car came back with at least the windshield cleaned off for us... I would have probably died. Again, a very very minor observation, but it didn't make a difference in the big picture. Definitely a 5+ star experience. I mean seriously, have you ever stayed at a hotel where even the cleaning service employees can strike up a conversation and answer almost any question you have, all with a smile on their face? Some people may find that annoying and surreal and just a front to keep the customer happy, but for us it felt genuine, and it made all the difference in the world. And for them it means a repeat customer, as we will never stay anywhere else ever again.

Great 40th Birthday Trip

We had a great experience at the Grand Californian on our 40th birthday trip to Disneyland. It was our first trip to Disneyland and the convenience of the Grand Californian to the park and Downtown Disney made for a truly memorable experience. Getting to check in early when we arrived (before noon) gave us extra time to relax and a few extra hours in the park. Getting the extra hour each morning with the park to ourselves let us knock out a lot of the popular rides without having to wait. Great hotel and great location!

Love the Grand Californian

I love staying on-site at the Grand Californian. It adds a special sparkle to my trip to Disneyland. I enjoy being close to the park the direct entrance into DCA the elegance of the lobby the Hearthstone bar and the quietness of my room It isn't always in my budget, but when it is, it is a magical place to stay.
