Westward Look has it all

There are many positive attributes to this resort and a few negatives. Being a positive person I will start there. First, and very importantly, all staff were very friendly and made every effort to accommodate our needs or answer any questions. The resort is situated on 80 acres and practically backs up to the Santa Catalina fore range. The grounds are immaculately maintained by a small army of personnel. The resort has three pools (two for lounging, one lap pool), an excellent fitness center with modern equipment (treadmill, stairmaster, bikes, ellipticals, free weights, and weight machines), tennis courts, conference rooms, spa which includes massage, manicure/pedicure, ramadas (I think those are more for looks), and an equestrian center. Adjacent to and connected to the lobby is a bar, restaurant, and coffee bar. Westward Look pays homage to the desert environment. It does not try to make the resort into Hawaii or a golf course. You will find a lot of crushed granite pathways, Ocotillo, Saguaro, Barrel, and Sanita Cactus, Jumping Cholla, Agave, and Palo Verde. In fact, there is even a foot path (about 3/4 mile) you can walk in the early morning or evening where you can see all these desert plants. It is a very peaceful walk and provides fantastic vistas of the Catalina metamorphic core complex just to the northeast. The cottages are clean and tidy, decor was a bit dated, and include plasma TV, small refrigerator, iron, and safe. The air conditioner worked on demand and had no problem cooling the room. Wifi access is readily available (not free, more on this later) and you can easily upgrade to faster access. The pool and surrounding areas were kept immaculately and there were plenty of recliners and umbrellas, and towels. The main pool has a pool-side bar where you can get food and drink (although it seemed closed most of the time). A few issues that a posh resort such as this should eliminate: Signage! This is a huge resort. I know that management wants the guest to feel like they are in the desert, but signage is minimal. For example, each cottage 4 plex should be marked as unit A or B or C. This was not the case. We had to rely on the map, which didn't identify the units either. The staff wrote them on the map. This facility has many parking lots. Each lot should be labeled something like parking for Units A, B, and C... The shower in the room was badly clogged by hard water deposits. One could not get a fully pressurized stream of water. Even at the low water flow, the water drainage was poor. I'm pretty sure this could be rectified with a new shower head and some occasional rootering of the drain. Finally, and annoyingly, Westward Look charges a $20 per night resort fee. I asked the staff what the fee covers. She said it covers the resort, internet, and other amenities. I asked if this was a mandatory fee and she said that it is. I went back and looked at my booking and sure enough the fee was there. Of course it was in smaller writing below the primary booking, but it was there. I am not sure why this is not part of the rate since it is mandatory. Using this method, a hotel could lower rates like crazy and make everything a mandatory fee. Another reason I found this annoying was that the staff said that wifi access at the resort was free, obviously a falsehood. Finally, for what we paid, it would have been nice to have a continental breakfast included (afterall they did charge a resort fee). Continental breakfasts are pretty standard in many hotels these days. Overall I would definitely return and I would recommend to friends.

Westward Look in April 2013

Upon check-in was not happy with the room. Was to be given a room with a desert view. I even wrote and called ahead to ensure this. We got a room that on was along the road entering the resort. The second room we were given was not any better. The view as of a rock pile -- absolute NO view at all this time. We went to the pool two afternoons. At the main pool there were only 4 towels for the entire pool area and persons using the pool. I moved the lounge chair and the wheel fell off. Tried to drop the back of lounge chair flat and it broke. Used the lap pool the second day -- absolutely no water to be found! Usually at resorts (such as Loewe's) water is provided for all persons at the pool area. Upon check out -- I was handed my bill for the resort fee (still don't know what that was for -- we didn't even get a newspaper!!!) and said this would be our only receipt. Never asked if we liked our stay and never said THANK YOU at all. This was definitely NOT A 4 DIAMOND resort!!! Will not stay again.

Reminded me of home

I am from Tucson but live in Chicago. Staying at the westward look reminded me of my childhood. Also the food and pool were just what we needed after a day of hiking. Thank you

Great location, lovely environment

The hotel was great with luxury accommodations, natural desert environment with many varieties of cactus, and sparkling pools and hot tubs. We really enjoyed its proximity to many excellent hiking and trail running areas including Pima Canyon, Catalina State Park, and Sabino Canyon. It was a perfect getaway from our kids though we did see lots of families with children at the resort also. My only complaint is that the food is rather expensive, though there are plenty of good restaurants nearby. Overall a great value!

Romantic Get Away

Several of the whirlpools only worked part of the time. The lap pool was closed for the last two days. They offer a night turn down service which they did the first night. We asked if that service was a chargeable amenity (also daily paper) the answer was no to both. The paper was delivered daily from then on. The turn down service, which included delicious chocalates the first night, never happened in spite of two requests. Sabino Canyon is great. Also, horse back riding at Coco Ranch was fun. Be sure to buy the Tucson Passport at $18.00. It saved us over $100.00.
