Excellent stay at Tryp Washington Madrid
Absolutely perfect location next to Plaza de España, Callao and the thrill of Gran Vía. Surprisingly quiet and tucked away accommodation, but very easy to find and access. Staff is great and helpful, and rooms are very clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
Many great tapas bars and cafes along Gran Vía, also try food around Plaza Mayor (15-20 min walk from the hotel). No need to pay 14€ for breakfast at the hotel, try tortilla at any places on Gran Vía or have breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien bakery close to Plaza de Callao.

5-day stay in Madrid
Hotel staff was very helpful and efficient. The hotel is perfectly located, close to lots of the things you'd want to see in Madrid (museums, the palace, etc.), and right on the Metro too, for when you need to get further. Internet at the hotel is 2 euros for 1 hour or 8 euros for 24 hours, but there are two starbucks on the same block for when you'd like to do it for free. The rooms are fine. Pretty small, but this is pretty normal for Europe. The bathrooms were newly styled and clean, and the beds were big enough, if not the softest. We slept just fine. I would recommend asking for a room on the inside of the hotel, as the outer rooms on Gran Via are exposed to a lot of city noise, even very late at night.

Entertainment tip:
Long walk from hotel
We went to see an absolutely AMAZING flamenco show at Casa Patas (1-2 miles from the hotel) one night. I highly HIGHLY recommend this show. Call to make reservations. We paid 32 euros per person (includes one drink), and were SO impressed and moved.

Very good central location to see the city on foot – Two Starbucks nearby, for morning coffee - Rooms good and clean Underground car park just round the corner but expensive, although the hotel gives a 30% discount on parking

The walls iin the lobby and room
The walls iin the lobby and room were dirty, however, the bathroom was clean. There was not one chair nor table in a very small room. The lift was barely big enough to carry two people and two suitcases. Some of the staff were helpful, but some were not. Location was good, close to all attractions. The dirtiness of the walls in the lobby and the room made it most uninviting.

first time to Spain
The hotel is in a very good location, close to many things. But with it being on one of the busiest street, it's very noisy. The traffic is so loud that eating at a street side cafe made convesation very hard. We upgraded to a room with a view of Gran Via. The first room we were given was room 810. The smell of Ham from the street level meat store was so stong we could never have made it thought the night, and I love Ham. I return to the front desk to request a new room and the counter person didn't seem suprized at the request and quickly assigned us a new room. The new room 907 was ok but the room and hotel were dated and needs updating. Things like chipping paint on the cieling, wore mattress, room safes that didn't work,tv remotes that didn't work

Use the Metro, it's very easy to get from one side of town to the other and much quicker than taking a cab. We took a cab from the airport to the area of the rio Rosa area and the cost was about 30E

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!
The front desk people were not helpful at all. There was NO HOTEL SECURITY at all, day or night. Upon arrival while checking in, in the lobby, which is about ten feet from the sidewalk, our passports and some money was stolen. This could have been avoided if there was hotel security. The front deck told us to go to our room and call the police from there. Which we did because the hotel refused to call for us. When we checked outed the hotel had the nerve of charging us for the phone calls to the police. Which we refused to pay. There was no help with the luggage. We had to take the luggage up ourselves in an elevator the size of a phone booth. The bigger elevator was out of order. It was that way for the 3 days that we were there. There was no restaurant on the site. There was not even a coke machine. Upon leaving, the front desk people were very rude and would not call a taxi for us. We were glad to leave this hotel. DO NOT STAY HERE.
