San Juan hotel offers character and comfort on Isla Verde Beach

Few Isla Verde hotels have the personality of the Beach House. On the beach behind the boutique hotel sit huge canopy beds for lounging. Entrance to the hotel's beach club comes with the use of towels and lounge chairs, massage therapists (fees apply), and attendants who dispense sunblock, gelato and frosty drinks. The hotel's Cafe la Plage spills out onto a palm tree-shaded patio, which opens seamlessly to the sand. When the sun goes down, the patio becomes a nighttime hot spot lit warmly with candles and tiki torches.

Highlights
  • Located on Isla Verde Beach
  • Private beach canopy beds
  • Beach attendants
  • On-site restaurant
Rooms

The cozy rooms at the Beach House have a bright, contemporary look that mimics the coastline outside their windows, with thick drapes and duvets the color of dunes and seagrape leaves. Leather headboards and stainless steel lamps give the rooms a European feel. High-speed wireless Internet access is available in every room. Each bathroom has a shower. All of the rooms have a flat-screen TV with DVD player, iPod docking stations and L'occitane products.

Dining

Cafe La Plage is an on-site brasserie serving lunch and dinner. Specialties such as seafood ceviche are served either in the breezy indoor dining room or an outdoor patio. Guests can request a table on the beach surrounded by tiki torches. The cafe at the Beach House is closed on Mondays.

Entertainment

On weekend nights, the patio lights are dimmed, a movie screen is raised and independent films are shown. Thursdays are the nights for "Jazz Under the Stars" at Café la Plage.

Recreation

Step out the back of the Beach House and onto Isla Verde Beach. The hotel's 90-foot-long yacht, the Bateau la Plage, is available for charter (fees apply). The Beach House also offers a "boot camp beach workout," every Saturday for a fee.

couple trip

Gets a little loud with the music. The food wasn't all that great. Access to the beach and servers on the beach was great. Air conditioning stopped working twice. Water pressure in the shower was terrible and it didn't smell clean at all.

Great Little Getaway

This hotel is old, and the rooms don't have much in them. But it's right on the beach, there are beds with draperies right on the sand, they change the linens on them daily. We lounged on the beds, read, drank, and watched the ocean. It was beautiful

not as advertised

The only good thing about this hotel is that it's on the beach. It was infested with biteing bugs, and the photos online are not at all current. Everything is old and worn down. I wouldn't stay here again.

This hotel is a filthy old dump - Do Not stay there

This hotel is a small 2 story concrete/block (no elevator) beachfront building in the Isla Verde area. The building was likely built in the 60s and appears to have not been remodeled since then. We had no hot water for our 3 day pre-cruise stay. Unresponsive, indifferent front desk and cleaning/maintenance staff. Plastic sheeting taped over the old, steel louver windows. Overall dirty room; stains on the walls, dirt and sand on the old linoleum! floors. Ancient TV. Filthy, moldy bathroom with very old fixtures. The wood decking at the hotel entrance is hazardous, rotting and loose. The adjacent restaurant is popular with locals and generates much loud noise most evenings. Photos and descriptions of this hotel listing are completely misleading. This building should have been demolished years ago. There are much nicer budget places to stay in the Isla Verde area.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

If you want to see mainly Old San Juan, do not stay in the Isla Verde or Condado areas; the taxi fees from there to OSJ will run $20 each way. The public bus is cheap but very slow on an unreliable schedule Rental cars are cheap but all of the hotels charge a daily parking fee, $10 to $25, even if you rent a car from them. Overall, San Juan, Puerto Rico is a "been there, done that" destination on my list.
