Old San Juan hotel sets the standard for historic elegance
The historic Hotel El Convento was opened as a convent in 1651 and reopened as a hotel in 1963 by an heir to the Woolworth fortune. Rita Hayworth and Ethel Merman are among its famous guests. The hotel sets the standard for luxury in Old San Juan. This gem of Spanish Colonial architecture was meticulously restored with handcrafted tiles, thick mahogany beams, velvet settees and hand-carved chairs. A lushly landscaped interior courtyard is lit by Old World wrought-iron lanterns. Modern conveniences include a rooftop plunge pool, sundeck and free Wi-Fi.

Five Stars for El Convento

Perfect setting in Old San Juan--near Morro Castle, Museums. Free internet, great Wine and Cheese Hour. Great for couples, friends hanging out. Roof top poor. Vouchers for two beach hotels. Beautiful Sunday church service across from hotel. Take the free trolley for tour of the Old City. The hotel does not tell you about "free" trolley. The rum factory is a blast, take the ferry to Catano and then $3 van ride to rum factory. This hotel does not give discount vouchers nor does the visitor's center. Go on line before travelling to San Juan for those. Have a great time.

Hotel El Convento Old San Juan

Positives: This was one of the best hotel stays we have ever had. The hotel is old but in excellent shape, located in the center of Old SJ and in walking distance to all parts of the old city. Staff excellent. Do not expect new hotel room size though. A/C worked great in room. Negatives: Parking at hotel $25/ day for guests. Friday night price triple any other day! Friday night noisey as they have ladies night in one of the restaurants.

Beautiful, historic hotel in Old San Juan

Gorgeous building, beautiful arch-ways, with an interior courtyard...very romantic. Helpful, friendly staff. Excellent restaurants. Would definitely go back in a heartbeat! Right in the city, you can walk to everything. Take a cab to one of the hotel's sister facilities when you want a day at the beach/larger pool. The rooftop pool is small at El Convento, but great to cool off after a day of sight-seeing. Can't wait to return!!!!!! Would highly recommend!

Nice Long Weekend In Old San Juan...except

Hotel nice. Location great. Excellent wine/cheese reception in early evening. Except...the room service was terrible. It might take hours for coffee. Only one staff person at front desk, clearly inadequate, when you would ask for assistance they said someone would call your room and no one would. Worst of all...NO kidding...a peice of jewlery was taken from the room and no one at the hotel cared much. After going back to the lobby and calling numerous times someone finally (two hours later) spoke with me and kindly refunded on night's stay. But I never felt they really cared about my level of comfort and need for assistance.

If you want beaches don't take cabs from hotel. Go to main plaza and take trolley or municipal buses. One fifth the price, and easy.

Perfection

Even with an extra hour and a half wait checking-in (our room wasn't ready and the check-in time kept being pushed back), our stay was perfection. Our room was grand with large windows looking out onto Catedral de San Juan Bautista. What a view! The staff was helpful and the complimentary drinks/bottled water a plus, but the nightly complimentary wine and cheese reception was our favorite part. It is not to be missed.
