Area description
There is no place quite like a tropical volcanic island, and no island in the Caribbean quite like Puerto Rico. The geography of the island is very unusual, as it encompasses distinctly different kinds of topography and microclimates in a relatively small area. A rugged mountain range runs across the center from east to west, which often prevents rain clouds from passing to the south. The north side of the island is covered by dense vegetation, limestone formations, and rushing streams, while, the south side is sun-toasted terrain, home to tropical dry forests and many species of exotic birds. Puerto Rico is only about 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, so its most distant points are only a three-hour drive apart. It also means that just about every tropical landscape in existence is a short trip from wherever you happen to be.

Great, but watch out for resort fees!

The hotel is nice and clean but a bit far from other things. If you're looking to camp out on the beach, this is a great option. If you want to go to a lot of other places, it might be better to stay in Old San Juan (those $12 cab rides add up!). Also, there's a 20% resort fee each night which can add a lot to your costs. Overall, a great hotel, nice beach. The staff was generally helpful and friendly.

Awesome getaway

The hotel has a beautiful open entrance with great views all around to take in. Many things are right there at the hotel including a steak house, native wildlife area and starbucks so we almost never left. It is family friendly although my wife and I came without the kids. The Caribe shaker at the swim up pool bar you get to refill and keep :) If I could change one thing it would be to make our stay longer.

Waikiki restaurant is a great to eat. I reccomend the Charasco steak. PS. Driving without insurance would not be advised if renting a car. People drive a bit crazy.

Fine Hotel

Only real problem was the very long check in and check out lines. Rest of the hotel was great. Restaurants at the hotel were ok but better in old San Juan. The hotel has a very sheltered ocean beach, if you want waves, go to Luquillo.

My "Only" complaint...

Palmera's restaurant, where most have breakfast, want you to have the buffet at $23.00 and too much food. Our waiter discouraged us when we asked for a menu telling us the kitchen had been fumigated...a lie...I said.."And your point??" He took his sweet time getting us a menu and bringing our food. Then we were charged $8.00 for 2 cups of coffee which would be free if we got the buffet....

I did not like the surprise of an 18% resort fee per day that I was unaware of until I checked in. When I book online I would like to know about all fees upfront.

Average hotel

This is not a four star hotel! We booked an ocean view room but were located in the garden section with only a view of a sliver of the ocean. The first room was very nice and updated. When we complained about not having the ocean view we paid for, we were told we could move to a room with a better view the next day. We did move to a room with a great ocean view, however, it was located in the HHonors Tower & was badly in need of updating. Everything was old, scarred, broken and obviously had not been updated in twenty years+. Apparently, there are not any newly updated rooms with an ocean view at the Caribe Hilton!

Can you say fees fees fees!

Went there expecting to pay a local fee of 156 according to the online company we booked through but than was told it was 189. Staff only cares about the next charge $15 to rent a rubber float. Food is very generic but you might have to mortgage house to eat for the week.
