Fancy hotel with super fancy price

The hotel was beautiful! But the restaurants were incredibly overpriced for only mediocre food. The staff was all amazing! You will feel pampered here but make sure to have a car to get food outside of the hotel.

Location is prime. is not crowed at this time of year. incredible value. I have stayed at many lesser hotles in downtown san juan an carolina for more money. Only about 20 min from airport. Only negative resarauants are lame an expensive. Have a rental car and there are many other options close by.

Did not meet expectations

The beach here is not all that pleasant and the resort is spread over a large area. One day there was one bar open in the whole resort. Often the few restaurant choices available were not open as well. Reservations could not get it straight that we were in the same room despite the need to make three different reservations. Pool is very nice. There were few umbrellas available and the cabanas all had a charge.

Beautiful Resort

It is a beautiful resort. The beach however is grainy with lots of broken shell pieces. I would not go into the water without wearing water shoes - I am a tenderfoot. But there were very few people and I walked long stretches of unpopulated beach with only rocks and shells for company. It was lovely. Service was good but slow. If you stay there, be aware that the resort is some 30 miles from San Juan. Either rent a car or be prepared for a massive taxi fare (~$80 one way) into San Juan. Renting a car is best since there are other sites on the island to visit in addition to San Juan.

Too remote anf isolated.

I have stayed at other Gran Melia's in the past and was very pleased with the accomodations and atmosphere. However, the Gran Melia in PR was located in a remote area and had very little entertainment. I was visiting for business during the day, but the afternoons were free. In order to get into town, you either paid $80 by cab, $75 for the resorts shuttle, or rented a car. The tours were over priced, ($75 dollars per person to tour Barcardi rum factory). If you rented a car, $54/day, and drove to the Barcardi factory, the tour was free. If you weren't over charged by the resort, then you were over charged by the cab companies. The only good quality about the resort was that the staff was attentive.

You're kinda stuck here

Beautiful hotel; beautiful grounds; great pool; swimming beach poor. Far away from everything, and renting a car costs another $16/day to park it. Food choices are very limited, expensive and poor (both value and cuisine). Bringing food and drink back to the hotel greatly discouraged (no way to keep anything cold). If you come for golf, the weather and the pool, you might be happy. Otherwise, not so much so.

if self contained is for you....

The staff were uniformly friendly and solicitous without being overbearing. The isolation of the resort may be a bit off putting for those who want to explore but if you want a place to spend that is generally good quality and comfortable for you and/or family, this is a fine place. Still under construction which is louder than need be, some irritating add ons (parking cost each day) and a slower than necessary checkout were not problematic enough to make the experience bad but will be better when completed. They could turn the irritating music off in the open areas and simply let the breezes and nature substitute and it would feel a bit less casino-like.

Not as good as expected

When you first pull up to the hotel you are somewhat impressed. It has a very open, and pleasant feel. But problem's appear as soon as you have questions or concerns. I brought my concerns to the attention to several of the staff, and it seemed like they were just giving you the standard response, yes sir, sorry to hear that, really... etc. etc. Then when you looked around, you staarted to notice nobody,NOBODY WAS IN CHARGE. It was like you were dropped off in the TWILIGHT ZONE, and there was only young somewhat trained monkeys left in charge, with nobody to answer your questions or address your concerns. I was treated with a half hearted sorry/tough tootie, more than once during my stay. Very Unhappily
