A good value for the money
This was our first time to visit and stay at the Montelimar Hotel in Nicaragua. Our overall impression of the place was good, unless you're the type of traveller who is used to paying 2-3 times as much for a resort hotel, then you're probably too spoiled to stay at this hotel resort. Pros: The staff was very friendly and helpful and when we asked to be moved to a bungalow from the hotel, they were very accommodating to me as I have a bad hip and walking longer distances is quite painful. The restaurant had long hours for each of the 3 meals (3 hours each) served each day. The food was good, but not astounding, and the local fruit was usually excellent. The waiters/waitresses were quite attentive to our desires as well. The pool is very nice, but oddly, closes at 7:30pm, the best time of day to be in the pool in my view. The bar/snack bar was great, and literally, you can drink any mixed drink on the menu and as much beer as you can hold, or soft drinks/juice. They also serve hamburgers and fries and the like, but I didn't have enough room in my stomach from the other meals to sample the snack bar fare, though it looked good. The location is wonderful. Right on the Pacific Coast, the restaurant has a view to die for, not 200 yards from the crashing surf. The grounds are a semi-tropical paradise. Probably the best feature of Montelimar. Negatives: They give you a wrist band to wear for the duration of the stay, that as far as I could tell will not come off. As my wife and I were celebrating our anniversary, at night, the band had a tendency to scratch us at the wrong times. Say no more. The Saturday evening show was laughable at best. The choreography, if it could be called that, was horrible, and the dancers were worse. The movements were sloppy. The outfits garish. And don't take your kids to the show unless you want to explain the birds and the bees early. As stated earlier, the pool closes at 7:30pm. Stupid stupid stupid. Never been to a hotel that even closed the pool if it was semi-decent! Charging US$12 per day for the internet. One of my pet peeves is hotels that charge for the internet. It costs them probably $1000 per month (it is expensive in Nicaragua), but raise your rates like $.10 per day, and you'll cover the cost. Still, when all is said and done, I would go back again and again and again for the value. Purchased through this site, the hotel was under $150 a night for both of us, and we each must've gained 5 lbs in 2 days, I think. You can get a total of 7 full meals in those 2 days, which, if you were eating out, would exceed $150 for both people within half that many meals.

Nightlife tip:
Short walk from hotel
The Casino has slots, blackjack, and roulette. No poker. If that's OK with you, go for it. To me, there are no good casinos in Nicaragua.

Breathtaking Views
The grounds, pool and beach are stunning. What a beautiful place. Spent an hour or so every day catching crabs (they're everywhere) with my son along the beach. Always seats available at the pool and the beach. Food, rooms, etc. were average like most all-inclusives. Only main difference I saw was the activities were lacking. The place has a lot of activities staff... yet, all they seem interested in doing is dancing by the pool. They're not very interested in organizing a volleyball game.... or even helping you get a ball for that matter.

I'd recommend renting ATVs near the hotel. They're reasonably priced ($35 per hour) and lots of fun to drive along the beach.

Nice Hotel "But"
I stayed at this hotel a few times in the last few years. This time I found the staff, specially at the front desk to be a little less friendly that in the past.

If traveling from the city of Leon to this hotel do not use "the old road to Leon" it is safer to go through the new highway to Managua then catch the "old road to Leon" where it joint the "Carretera Sur"

Relaxing Week
The Barcelo Montelimar all inclusive resort had a gigantic swimming pool which was extremely clean, well located with delightful pool boys (and girls). The nearby beach was beautiful with bathwaterwarm ocean. Most of the evening entertainment included great dance productions. We didn't care for the audience participtation activities prior to the show, but most guests seemed to enjoy them. The staff was friendly and helpful. Plenty of daytime activities. We had trouble getting the maids to deliver 3 towels and 3 bottles of water to our 2 double beds room, but received the extra towel and water w/o any problem when requested. Abundance of food and drink. Tipping not required but gratefully accepted. Middle of the week is best as the locals descend on the week-ends.

Hotel has a list of destinations to visit and prices. One price included all in our party of three. Must request English speaking driver as many of the taxi drivers speak only Spanish. We visited Granada and the Islands one day and Managua and a volcana another day. Very happy with both excursions.

Relax at Barcelo Montelimar
Before you reach the actual hotel, you are hit by the beauty of this place as you enter the gates (secured by a guard). It is a long drive to the reception desk. You feel like your driving through a tropical jungle. Check in was a breeze. Quick and easy. Hassle free. The room is very clean and roomy. The staff is very freindly and seems eager to help, but limited English language abilities. If you know a few words in Spanish, or don't mind gesturing, you should have no problem comunicating. Even the security guards who roam the grounds are nice and helpful. The food is not what I would expect from a 5 star restaurant but then again, this is a resort, not a restaurant. Food was in a buffet style. Typical Nica traditional food mostly, and even though I am not big on seafood, the fish was actually the best. The grounds are well kept, and for those who are interested in different types of trees and plants, they do have signs telling you what they are. Beaches were empty, seemed that people prefer the pools, but that is ok with me. Made for nice romantic walks on the beach without having to worry about stumbling over someone. Maybe since I was there during the week, that may have made a difference. I was there only 3 and a hlaf days, but now I wish it was longer. To enjoy the whole experience, try to be there at least a week. I know the next time I go, I plan on taking many members of my family with me and probably stay at least 6 or 7 days. Only drawbacks I can say about this place, is that they should give their staff more training in English. Also they may want to incorporate some type of courtesy shuttle to and from the airport( even for a small fee) As of right now, you have to take a taxi and it is a $60.00 (American money) ride each way (on average 1.5 hour trip one way).
