Honeymoon Stay
What an awesome resort! We stayed for our honeymoon andhad the honeymoon suite and it was perfect. The staff is the friendliest I have ever met. If something was needed it was done right away, from food to a light bulb. You must do the tequilla tasting at El Patio, it was very resourceful. Friendly, beautiful grounds, and you will find many more couples just like yourselves. Would go back again.

It All Depends on What You're Looking For
This was our second time to stay at an all-inclusive on the Riviera Maya. We have a strict no-whining policy when we are on vacation and make the best of anywhere we go....that being said, here is our take on the trip. We can't say enough good things about the Entertainment Team, especially Big Willy, Muppet, Mani, Bambi, Sasha, and the "new" Alberto. Very upbeat, learned our names the first time we met them, and kept the grounds "lively." The entertainment which was brought in each night was actually pretty good, especially compared to what we saw at the first location. We didn't make it to the Mexican or Italian restaurants but the rest served very good food. Service was consistently friendly, but very slow at times. No big deal if you plan to spend the evening at the restaurant vs going to a show, and I suspect if you let them know your time constraints they will accommodate you. Grounds were very well kept and beautiful. Here are the aspects that kept us from giving this resort 5 stars in all areas. The main thing is that the focus of the resort was on the grounds, themselves. You can walk a long time without seeing the beach. None of the restaurants really had a beach view and the ocean was not visible unless you stayed on an upper floor or were at the outboard edge of the pool. Check-in was smooth, but we were then ushered over to the VIP desk where they tried to get us to sign up for a 90 minute tour of related resorts. Unless you are interested in this kind of thing, turn down any free coupons and avoid the desk. Also, this was a very costly stay compared to Now Jade where we stayed last time. I believe it is due to the fact that the shows, food, and staff are generally of higher quality #though not in all cases.# In fact, many more of the staff at Now Jade spoke conversational English. Now, if nightly entertainment isn't your focus #and it was not ours# the staff and food at Now Jade were plenty good enough and EVERTHING was centered on the Ocean which is what we want to see the most when we are on a beach vacation. Not sure how to put this delicately, but if you are modest at all about bodily functions, you won't get much in the way of privacy in your bathroom in the junior suite. May not be a big deal, but we agreed worth mentioning. We got a room with a swim-out pool and enjoyed it every day except for our last when it started looking pretty green. The hot tubs were really luke-warm to cold tubs. We figured it was because the hotel did not want to be responsible for medical issues arising from people consuming large quantities of alcohol and jumping in 103 degree F water. Didn't stop us from making many new friends in the tepid waters every afternoon :) We tipped just about every time we ordered a drink and also at our meals, but this did not seem to be prevalent and our service did not seem to be better or worse than those who did not. Overall, a very, very nice all-inclusive that is a bit over-priced. Well..if you waded through the entire post, hope you found it helpful.

Dining tip:
In Hotel
Well...actually drinking vs. dining. We found the Margaritas and Pina Colodas to be sub-par, but the bar-keeps more than made up for this with other incredibly good drinks. Here is a tip that worked quite well for us: Whatever bar-keep you come across, ask him or her, "what is the very best drink you personally know how to make?" Following a big smile will come an incredible drink. Worthy of note were Salvidor's Drunken Monkey #not the Dirty Monkey# and "Salvidor's special."

Great trip to Mexico at Maroma Beach.
My wife and I just got back from a much too short 3 day stay at Secrets Maroma Beach. The hotel is beautiful, the hotel room was well appointed, clean and had great views of the ocean due to its 4th floor location in building 15. We booked the ocean view, non-preferred club, suite and were very happy with the accommodations. The food at all the resort restaurants was excellent and I really cannot offer any complaints on that front. The staff at this hotel deserve special recognition as they were uniformly pleasant, helpful and really went out of their way to assist you. We travel often and have stayed at other resorts but if you are planning trip to Mexico you can't go wrong with Secrets Maroma Beach.

The ocean view rooms are very nice. I didn't see anyone using the first floor swim outs and the views from those rooms are totally obstructed. I would rather save some money and get the better view from the balconies on the top floors where you can actually see the ocean.

Nice place BUT there are some drawbacks
The hotel is beautiful and the grounds are equally as magnificant. The staff is extremely nice and plenty and attentive. Alcohol is pretty good and they have a few upper shelf liquors available, which is a plus. The food at the restaurants is decent, although the best place to go is the Hibachi restaurant. The biggest problem with the place was that they try to pitch you on a time share right after you check in, which is really annoying. You are clearly there to enjoy time off with either friends or your significant other and the last thing you want is to get marketed to. The other issue we had is that we used the transportation company the site shows you as you are booking your trip. They not only had the audacity to call at 7:30 in the morning the day after we arrived to "meet to schedule your return trip", BUT they tried to sell us on side trips while bad mouthing the hotel recommend tour company tha tis in the lobby of the hotel. This really left a bad tast in our mouths and is why we would not recommend going unless you were prepared to deal with this. We dont think you should on your vacation so that is why we have the 3 star rating.

While they dont explicitly tell you the hotel is a time share, it is. When the staff sits you down after checking in, just make sure to state you are not interested in a time share and that you are there to enjoy your vacation otherwise you will lose 1.5hrs of relaxation.

Nice but with issues
My husband and I are frequent travelers to the Mexican Riviera and have stayed at around 15 different properties. This was our first stay at Secrets Maroma although we have stayed at other Secrets resorts. First, this resort has the best beach of any we've stayed at with El dorado Maroma coming in second. We did have some issues the first few days of our stay. Upon checking, I asked that we not be located near the disco and theater because of the noise. We usually don't go to the shows and we like to turn in early because we are usually on the beach at sunrise. The man checking us in assured us that we would not hear any noise at all and upon being led to our room we noticed that we were literally less than 30 yards from them in building 12. I gave them the benefit of the doubt but at 9:30 the music and drums began and pounded our wall. There was no sleeping until around 1:30. Also there was a screeching all night long coming from our balcony area. I hoped on the second night that I would be so tired that the noises wouldn't matter, but they did. Again music and screeching. We finally asked to be moved because we paid a lot of money to be able to rest and relax and that wasn't happening. We did get moved to building 22 and it was much quieter. They were also moving another guest in building 12 because of the same balcony noise which he described as a train whistle. The new room was good except in the middle of my shower, the water pressure, which was very light to begin with got even lighter until there was no water at all. I had shampoo in my hair and soap all over me. My husband called and they told him they would have to call him back which they never did. Finally after about 15 minutes of standing in the shower freezing, the water came back on. I saw another post that said they had the same problem with running out of water. We have never had this happen in our 20+ stays in the Mexican Riviera and it is unacceptable for this type of upscale resort to not have an adequate water supply for their guests, especially considering it is one of the most expensive properties there. The food was good, but with hit and miss, the pools were pretty, the staff was friendly, and there were plenty of chairs. If you don't pay for an upgrade to the Preferred, you will not be in a building close to the beach and there will be a lot of walking. That wouldn't have been a problem, but my husband has some difficulty after an ankle surgery, so it limited us and made it hard. We requested a room close to the beach before we came and were told they would do their best but when we got here they told us that unless we were preferred we couldn't be close to the beach and they told us preferred was sold out. We would have probably gone back to El Dorado Maroma had we known that because it is beautiful and small and easy to get around. We chose to try this Secrets because we thought we would be closer and the walk wouldn't be an issue. I only mention it in case you are handicapped and the size of the resort is an issue. One other issue was there is a constant stream of people on tour trying to be sold timeshares. They are everywhere and especially on the beach, so you can't just relax because every five minutes someone is bringing a group there to try to sell them and you too have to listen to the sales pitch as they stand right next to you and even block the walkways. Other than that, beds were comfortable, they went all out for Oscar night and had a great Oscar watching party. Maid service was the best of all the resorts. Buildings were very pretty and grounds were beautiful. Room Tip: Do not accept building 12 if you want to sleep.

After All These Years
Winter Anniversary
My husband I stayed at SMB for our anniversary during the last days of January/first days of February, 2013. We had a great time and definitely enjoyed our stay. The weather was mostly good, with only one day that had to be spent indoors. (However, that is the chance one takes when vacationing at this time of year.) SMB is a beautiful resort, with a staff that is ultra-friendly and seems willing to do anything to make your stay perfect. The beach is gorgeous. There were guests of every age, shape, and size. We loved that they have solved the problem of one person "saving" multiple lounge chairs early in the morning: the pool concierge will remove any unattended personal items left on a lounge chair before 10:30 AM. No exceptions! Food: We loved the coffee shop, where we were able to order cappucinos, frappes, etc. throughout the day. The restaurants that we visited - French, Italian, Japanese, and World Cafe were second to none. We enjoyed the World Cafe breakfast buffet every morning of our stay. Bar service throughout the resort was typically good, and getting top shelf alcohol was not a problem. The Barefoot Grill provided excellent snacks at the pool. Rooms: Our standard room was very, very comfortable, beautiful, and clean. The bed and pillows were excellent. Maid service was typically very good. Amenities: The gym is attractive and well-equipped. There are the usual ellipticals, weights, etc. There are three treadmills, but one was out of service throughout our stay. The pool situation is somewhat deceptive from the pictures provided by the resort. The main pool is the only one that is heated, so was really the only usable pool during our visit and frequently became crowded. There is a smaller pool near it, but the water in it was quite cold. There are other large areas of water situated in the center of the resort, but they are only about 12 inches deep... Nightly entertainment was fun, and much better than some resorts where we have stayed. We especially enjoyed American Idol and the Sensuality shows. The staff was welcoming and helpful to everyone. Our only complaints about SMB were about the smallish usable pool and the pool entertainment staff. Although these people were very pleasant, they did not stay in one area. Instead, they began in the morning at one end of the main pool and worked their way to the other end by the afternoon, with noisy water aerobics, water volleyball, etc. This meant that anyone who wanted peace and quiet was out of luck at some point. We did notice something that has been mentioned by other reviewers: there seemed to be many large groups of people traveling together. Some of these people behaved as if they were entitled to sit side by side at the pool as a group (taking up an entire side of the pool), and became perturbed when someone else was seated in "their" area. (This certainly is not the fault of SMB - just something to watch out for.)

Ask to be seated side by side in the French or Italian restaurants. It was romantic, intimate, and easier to have a conversation no matter how busy the restaurant was.

Fun and Relaxing Stay
Perfect stay! Our profile: We are in our 40's, live in San Francisco/Marin County, are healthy/active and have done a lot of traveling. The beach is gorgeous, staff is personable and attentive, the property is attractive and the entertainment is great. We had a swim up room and used the pool twice a day. Other highlights include renting a palapa on the beach (Nicasio and Ubano took great care of us), breakfast is awesome and playing beach volleyball twice a day. The entertainment staff really enhanced the fun factor. Everyone on that team is great! Because of the activities we chose, we particularly got to know Big Willie, Carlos, Manny and Diana. Another activity not to miss is the free photo session. We had a fun time and our photos came out GREAT! We bought a few to remember our trip. We stayed at the Grand Velas last trip and the only category that 5 star hotel had over Secrets was the food was a bit better. We highly recommend this property!

Great beach, but Food was not great!
You gotta love the beach, but the food was not great. Staff and amenities were good. I was not impressed. The staff is very strick on the hotel/company policies. I asked them for a few things, but they were not flexible. Their response was... It's company policy.Dinner was the gourmet restaurants were ok, but not great. I recommend the main cafe where they serve breakfast.

I recommend not to upgrade on your room unless you want a swim-out suite. Must people spend all day at the pool or at the beach. Also it's cheaper to get a taxi at the airport. Buy the round-trip transfer and pay with a credit card. Don't buy it online.
