5 Star Resort Lives Up to Promise

Enjoyed every moment at this first class resort. Immaculately maintained. Functional and attractive room looks exactly like website, with right amount of closet / storage space, lovely bathroom, ultra comfy bed... The cuisine and service exceeded our expectations. Staff is so courteous and friendly. LOVED the ease of making all our plans thru a personal concierge. The view across the infinity pool to the gulf / Caribbean is as good as it gets. I have stayed in many top hotels / resorts - but this one is special. Good place to shake off the corporate stress and do nothing but sleep, sun, swim, eat, drink, spa, smile and RELAX. You need to go!

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

1) When they tell you to have the shuttle / taxi pick you up 4 hrs in advance - it is so you will spend your last dime in the duty free shops / over-priced restaurants at Cancun's It'l airport. They don't assign gates until 50 min's before departure so you are left roaming the airport aware that you are NOT in a 5 star resort anymore Toto. Eat a big meal at the resort before you leave 2.5 hrs before your flight. 2) Book all of your dinner reservations for the week the day you arrive. Otherwise you will miss out on the best experiences / times. 3) Do NOT sign up for excursions through the vendors in the airport upon arrival. they are scams for timeshares and will cost you 1/2 day of your valuable vacation and excursions are 2nd rate.

Right resort for singles

I was at the RH Playa del Carmen for one week. The resort is in a great location to reach the lively downtown; it is a very pleasant 30 minutes walk in a safe neighborhood, passing even near an archaeological site. Rooms and facilities are clean and well maintained; the staff was outstanding, impeccable and friendly (never over-friendly). I would recommend it (also to any solo traveler!)

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

Highly recommend walking to the end of the long beach; there are some small coves with black volcanic rocks and white sand clashing with the shades of blue of the water: stunning.

Beautiful, relaxing resort

Just got back from a week's stay and loved it! It is definitely a high end resort, mostly catering to older couples. There were a few younger couples there and for the first part of our stay a wedding party and guests were there. I love the all inclusive concept, and the food was delicious in all 5 restaurants. We were able to walk to the town of Playa del Carmen in about 25 min along the beach. All the staff are very very accomodating, service is top notch! The negatives: Internet extremely slow in the rooms, prone to disconnecting; not many electrical plugs in rooms; chaises by pool fill up early; required reservations for dinner get to be a hassle; I did get some sort of stomach virus or food poisoning that was quite awful for 24 hours. Not sure what caused it as I was careful re: water, etc. That said, the pro's outweighed the cons for us, we had a very relaxing vacation and would go back!

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

If you don't want to walk to the town of Playa del Carmen, there's a pretty good sized shopping area across the street from the hotel, with a Starbucks, and several souvenier, silver, t-shirt shops. Also, you can take a taxi to town for about $6.

Relaxing Vacation

Not a 5 star resort but one of the best 4 star all inclusive resorts in Playa Del Carmen. Staff is attentive, curteous, and conversational. Most speak fluent english. Beach is beautiful with soft, white sand, aquamarine water, and spacious lounge chairs and cabanas. Infiniti pool is beautiful although birds arrive in the afternoon. Sophisticated, adults only atmosphere on the resort grounds with no need to wear tacky ID bracelets. I didn't frequent the gym or spa.The cuisine is great for an all inclusive resort with a nice variety of restaurants and menus. Breakfast presents, among other delights, fresh squeezed OJ and eggs cooked to order served with a beautiful beach & ocean view. The resort, although dated, is beautiful and well maintained. Never a wait to play tennis on the 2 courts - day or night. Spent most of my time during the day at the beach or in a cabana with great wait staff service. Sunny 6 out of the 8 days I stayed. Entertainment at night was limited but it is a short walk or quick cab ride to downtown 5th Avenue. This was my 4th stay there and I've always enjoyed myself. An excellent value.

Great spot

This hotel was great! The rooms aren’t anything to write home about but that was fine since we were only in them to sleep and get dressed… you did hear the DJ at the neighboring hotel at night once in a while so request an inner room. This is the first time I've been to a resort where the rooms were cleaned so well that not a piece of sand could be found anywhere! And we stationed ourselves on the beach every single day. The food at the hotel was spectacular… they had a buffet breakfast every morning and two of the seven days we were there, they also offered an a la carte restaurant option for breakfast. It was all a la carte for lunch and dinner- 2 lunch restaurant options and 4-5 dinner restaurant options. They did have a buffet lunch set up during the day, most days, by the pool too if you just wanted to grab something quick, but we didn’t really use that. The only dinner spot that I was not crazy about was the Asian restaurant. If you go, I recommend just sticking to the sushi menu as the hibachi was kind of boring (unless you love hibachi and you may just love it). Las Ventanas was unbelievably good. There was nothing on the menu that I was dying to order but everything I ate was perfect and delicious. I could have been sitting at a 5 star restaurant in NYC, it was that good. There were a few menu items listed incorrectly (a cutlet came out as a chop, things like that) but that's just a language barrier issue. I'd recommend they have these issues corrected, as ordering would be much easier. The spa was very nice, my husband and I both got massages, mine was a well done prenatal massage. I was confident that the therapist knew what she was doing. There are only a couple hundred rooms so there was no competition for beach chairs. And lots of beach space to spread out. Only on our last day did the beach seem a little crowded but there was a group of people who knew each other that space-invaded us. When we walked down the beach, along the shore line, you notice how completely overcrowded the other HUGE hotels are, beach chairs literally on top of each other and all occupied. Gross. All top shelf liquor (not that it mattered to me as I was pregnant) as requested. All the service was top notch, waiters, beach cocktail servers, concierge, etc. Everyone was just so nice and willing to help. A few dollars here and there also ensured continued service. The people who work here deserve it. Overall, I’d highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking to just relax and take it easy. There isn’t really any nightlife which was A-OK with me! I heard that other people at the hotel went into Playa del Carmen to party. The location (Playacar) was also very safe, it’s an area with hotels and condos where all cars coming in and out have to check in with a security gate, provide their license and it’s returned to them when they leave. I felt very safe walking down the beach and around the hotel, at all times.

Wonderful trip to Playa Del Carmen

The Royal Hideway was a great hotel. The location was great, you can walk to town from the hotel. They offered bicycles if you prefere. The beach and pools were nice. It is a very quiet, relaxing hotel. The hotel staff is all very friendly, and most spoke English as well as Spanish. The food is magnicient. If you want a rejuvienating experience this is the place to go.

Great Getaway

Almost everything about the Royal Hideaway was perfect, but there were a few things that just don't make it 5 star. The pool, beach and waitstaff were fantastic, but one thing REALLY annoyed me, which was that we couldn't get dinner reservations before 9:00, sometimes 10:00 ANY night we were there, though we asked our concierge for early reservations REPEATEDLY. The whole point of going on vacation is being able to do things on your own schedule, and this was a huge disappointment for us. Not only could we not get dinner reservations until such a late hour, but there is no place to go and get a light appetizer in the entire place. The best you can hope for is a bowl of peanuts at the bar. There's no food in the minibar, only a few cans of soda, beer and small waters, so that's no help either, and the room service menu is also small and very disappointing. But other than that, things were great. The service on the beach was great and the food itself, once you actually sat down to ate, was incredible.

Beautiful quiet place

We go on vacation to have a restful time so this was a great place. It is a bit "sleepy" and would not be good for anyone looking for a crazy time. The grounds are gorgeous and well maintained and the staff does everything they can to please the guests. We did bring cash to tip the staff and they were always appreciative. Some of our favorite things were the restaurants, the piano player and the special musicians they bring in most days. And the Mexican show/night was fantastic! The beach is beautiful but we didn't sit out there much because of the birds flying around and nearly getting pooped on. We found a very quiet pool back by the spa that we liked to read by. The one thing that my husband missed was a sports bar to watch the football games. We have been at other resorts and had fun cheering on our teams with a crowd. Tis time we had to watch the games in our room. All in all, we had a wonderful time at the Royal Hideaway!
