High School Spring Break trip
There are actually 5 "hotels" to choose from in this resort. We chose the Caribe for the price, but when I go again, I will stay at the Tropical. The rooms at the Caribe were bare minimum rooms and not cleaned daily. We hung out at the Tropical pool and resturant most days. That is where the action is!

Good times
Best restaurant is the sea food , I wont recommend the steak house ,buffet is very good and depending who you get for the fresh juice they are amazing , no service in the beach area but overall it is a very nice resort very clean the shows at night are very nice , I will come back to Barcelo Maya Tropical \ Oh wake up early and before anything reserve a chair by the beach

Relaxing, yet fun!
Upon arrival, we learned the Tropical resort, which we reserved, was full. So, we were upgraded to the Palace... which made us ecstatic of course! Our entire experience overall was amazing... the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. It was nice to have the feeling of being taken care of with any request we had! The only negative comment we have is that our room was missing a coffee maker, an ice bucket and the foam pad on our bed. However, when I called the front desk to request these things, our request was immediately taken care of! We were very impressed on the cleanliness of our room... when we'd return from being out all day, we'd come back to an emaculate room! Regarding our stay overall, it was a very relaxing trip, but also fun to see the planned activities throughout the day. It was great to have such a selection for shopping around the resort. The food at each restaurant was delicious; as well as the buffet food. We had the buffet every day for breakfast and lunch and were happy with such a wide selection and choices for the food! It was a wonderful experience and we would definitely return!

Was better on previous trip
Stayed at Barcelo Colonial three years ago and it was fabulous. Just got back from January 2013 vacation to the Barcelo Tropcal and it was not nearly as nice. The food was not as good as prior trip and had an awful time getting decent pillows and more than one washcloth. The resort is still beauttiful and the staff very friendly, but the extras were missing this time. The nightly entertainment was terrible. Will probably not return.

Over all experience
The room was very nice, the staff was great, although limited English. Food was ok but not as good as we have had other places. The evening entertainment started at 9:30 pm, wished it started a little earlier, even 9:00 would be better. The entertainment lacked a lot. One night out of 8 was very good (a Micheal Jackson impersonator), other nights were so-so (Mexician Dancers doing native dances. One night of that was fine, but it kept coming several nights.) One night was Karoke which was so-so. The beach is beautiful, free kayaks, and paddle boats to use. Can get free scuba lessons in the pool. For the price it's a nice trip.

Shopping at the resort is good, we also drove into Playa del Carman about 20 miles away and shopping there was good too, plus you get a good look at a Mexican city. We felt safe during the day, but I would not go there after dark.

Tried to upgrade, but at $160 per night not worth it.Breakfast buffet was good. Service at front desk was average at best at the Beach. Much better at the Caribe.Second time at the Barcelo and was disappointed this time.Beach is still awesome with good snorkelling, lots of fish and sea turtles.Room was average but clean and maid service was very good.

Worst thing was the pillows or the lack there of. Sometimes it was impossible to get a drink at the pool bar of the Tropical. Also need rocks removed at the Tropical beach making it almost impossible to get into the ocean. Best thing was the kind staff, great food, and beautiful grounds.

Wonderful experience
We went as a group of 3 couples and stayed at the Barcelo maya beach resort. Everything was so amazing from the food, to the shows, to the staff! This was our first experience with the Barcelo chain and it was a very positive experience. The only down side was that the airport transfer was not included and the wifi access was extra. This trip gave us all a bang for our bucks!

If your looking to shop at playa del carmine, beware of local vendors trying to high ball you for their goods. They start with a high price and then give u 50% off, which is still high... Keep bargaining, you hold the purchasing power!

Bait and Switch
Not all inclusive! You are immediately prodded to purchase an "upgrade" upon check in which would allow you to use all of the restaurants on the property. The description that I was given when I purchased the deal led me to believe that all the restaurants were included. The food was HORRIBLE! I have been to many all inclusives and this was the first time that I left a property to find better food. They admittedly cut the air con off to the rooms at certain hours of the day and night making the room extremely uncomfortable and hot.
