Love this place. I've been privilaged to stay here twice now. It's a nice size resort in a great location. The staff are excellent from the maid service to the entertainment staff, bartenders, waiters and front office. Only complaint is the sound that carry's in the upper rooms. Not much you can do about it, but the thatched roofs allow alot of noise from the birds on the roof and noisy neighbours. A great holiday none the less. Location is perfect. Walking distance to Playa along the beach.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Right across the way is a great market for shopping. Also..be sure to go deeper into the stores for the "local priced" items. IE.. $1.00 beers..lol

What a Disappointment! Do not Stay at Allegro Playacar

We had great hopes for Allegro Playacar and wanted not to believe all the bad reviews. We were wrong. Even though the service, food, beach and pools were good, what did it for us was the lack of attention of the room we stayed. Let me start by sharing that the beds we got had cement box springs. That's right - CEMENT BOX SPRINGS. They were hard like a rock. The mattresses were old and ripped when we lifted the sheets. We complained with front desk staff and they brought "mattress tops". Well, let me tell you, the "mattress tops" were old and ripped too. Needless to say, my and wife's back were in pain for a week. The AC units are old and noisy. Front desk staff are not trained to problem solve or make room changes. You have to wait for a manager who is not always available. In conclusion, we will never return to Allegro Playacar. This is definitely not a 3 star hotel. Also, right when you arrive, when you're tired from your flight, they have concierge staff that want you to buy their "member' s only" and are like sharks pushing you to go to the presentation. I got tired of these people. Do yourself a favor, and find another hotel.

maintenance problems

It seems that the different departments in the hotel do not communicate with each other. The first night we had a problem with the shower and asked for an extra pillow. The shower was repaired but it took them 3 days to get the extra pillow. The shower broke the second day and we were transfered to another room. This room had a defective safe and the security officer said he would have someone look at it the next day.He also said he would write a report about what he found to be wrong.Needless to say, the maintenance person had no idea what was wrong with it and took it to be repaired. When it was returned and we had stored our belongings,we couldn't open it and had to call security again. This nsame room had a broken shampoo dispenser and when we mentioned it to the maid, she said she filled it and left the bottle on the rim of the tub.No one came to fix it. The third room was better but we had to constantly call reception for them to leave the complimentar coffee in the room. Other than these setbacks, the stay was enjoyable. The beach area was great and the personel was very friendly.

We enjoyed our stay.

We stayed from 06/12/12 to 06/17/12. We arrived after midnight; there was just the one guy at reception so we had to take our own luggage and find the room. The room wasn't luxurious, just average but was clean and what you would expect for a 3 star hotel. It included a small fridge, safe and hair dryer. The adjoining door in the room, (for access for people with large families that needed two rooms), was paper thin and we could hear everything in the adjoining room, including snoring! The mattress was hard. Brush up on your Spanish or you will have trouble communicating with some of the staff. Unfortunately we didn't have a view of the beach, (we were near the tennis court). The beach is beautiful and plenty of space for all. We enjoyed the food. The grounds are well kept and I enjoyed the bird sounds in the morning. Playa del Carmen is more for couples than singles and is not a party destination. You can walk into playa de Carmen, it probably takes 25 minutes, but if its very hot this can be a chore. To take a taxi is $7 USD. Make sure you take pesos and pay in pesos, we made the mistake of paying for everything in USD and soon learned they will try to scam you at every chance they get. We did four activities and we enjoyed Xplor the best. We used the collectivo transportation a few times, but make sure you agree on the price beforehand, (it should only cost $2 per person) but we can one driver who had us pay more and because he was intimidating we paid, I wish now I hadn't. Overall we enjoyed this resort.

TOTAL SCAM

Travelers, beware of this bait and switch scam. When we arrived at Allegro Playacar we were told they had overbooked and our reservation would be honored at Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret. I told them we came for the beach and shopping in the area and that would not do. [...], the manager assured me that the beach was beautiful in Xcaret and if we were not happy we could check into the Allegro the following day. She showed me photos of the hotel on the internet, and the picture showed a beautiful beach, so we went. BIG MISTAKE. There is NO BEACH, just rocks and a small manmade "lagoon" that is filled with water from the underground river, not even salt water. The hotel is in the jungle! We were not happy being lied to about the situation and irate when we couldn't get into the Allegro. It was a total waste of a week, we go for the therapeutic effects of the salt water. Don't think this is an isolated incident, folks. They overbooked the Allegro by 50 to 100 rooms per night the entire week we were there, December 1-8, 2010. I think they did it to fill up the Grand Flamenco. In the event this happens to you, we talked to people who got tickets to the park, day passes to the Allegro, cab fare, etc. So, demand lots of perks. I was told that they were even putting people up at Viva Wyndham Maya in Playacar. They would do nothing for us and we are currently pursuing it through our travel agent. Now, the Grand Flameco Xcaret is a nicer hotel than the Allegro, also three times the size. So, if you have kids and want to go to the Xcaret Park right next door and hang out at the pools, you might be happy here. There is nothing else in this area, not even one other hotel. Otherwise, I suggest you don't book the Allegro.I have been traveling the the Riviera Maya twice a year for over 25 years and this is the worst experience I have ever had.

humid buggy unhelpful

i tried to call the room for a wake up call. 15 times i was hung up on. i spoke both english and spanish in my attempts. I never got any assistance. when i went to the front desk and let them know i had killed more than 20 ants in my bathroom and yet they continues to crawl around my sink and safe, the staff assured me it would be checked out.. nobody came. when i tried to use my US dollars given to me from the occidental "tour" of the facilities at the gift shop to pay for internet which i thought was going to be free and apparently was not, i was told i would receive no change. where i live i dont just give away 5 dollars.i asked where i could find the "disco" of 3 staff and nobody could tell me. I found it when i wandered in on the last night of my stay. the mattress was extremely hard, i had little to no working air conditioning in my room.when i woke everyday my clothes were damp from the moisture of hanging out. i killed two rather large cockroaches. One i took a picture of on my wall. the bed had ants crawling on it so i slept in my hammock one night because it was cooler outside than in my room and had no bugs to crawl on me.no resolution was ever made except the help i received from other guests as to how to get the air conditioning to work better by closing the bathroom door on the very last night of my stay.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

instead of going to "5th avenue" if you want some cheap souveniers turn left out of the hotel and walk about 2-3 min. you will find many shops and a starbucks with FREE wifi.

Allegro Pyayacar - All Inclusive

I was a little disappointed in the hotel. A little run down. I also thought the rooms were too small. I loved the look and the layout of the accomodations. I also loved the balcony or patio that each room had. Pool water was too cold. The Italian restaurant on the property was wonderful, GREAT food, wait staff very attentive. The Mexican restaurant was awful, food nothing special, wait staff extremely slow and short handed. The restaurant was not full, I think maybe 6 tables were being used. Maybe that is why they turned customers away, with the explanation that they did not have reservations. Being a business owner I could not see turning a customer away when there were empty tables in the room. The food from the hotel itself was excellent. Nice variety. We booked a day at the Xplor. Wonderful!! All of us had a great time. Beautiful park. We did some shopping and ate at several restaurant in town. Great!! Nice that all were within walking distance. All in all we had a great time. Nice place to vacation. I don't know that I would book again at this hotel. SORRY
