Upgrades needed
While not the worst place in the world, I doubt many LGBT travelers would find these accomodations desireable. The staff were friendly enough, but overall, from the beds to the decor an upgrade is needed. We fondly referred to the bed as the "Flintstone bed" as it was like sleeping on a rock. Chiropractor, here we come!

Hotel Mercurio - PV
As noted above... the staff is great, the location perfect for gay men... the rooms are spartan and the place could use a coat of paint.... but breakfast is included and the value pretty good... if you want luxury look elsewhere... bit for convenience this is the place... also, the guests tend to be very friendly and overall this is a great place to stay..

Convenient for the gay traveler
While this hotel has its downsides, I keep coming back for the following reasons: (1) helpful, friendly staff, (2) convenient location about 6 blocks in either direction to the gay beach, the island, the malecon, and most gay bars, and (3) unlike most Mexican hotels, this hotel will let you bring guests to your room as long as they leave a government ID. Other pluses include modern A/C units which work well, a flat-screen TV with half a dozen English-language channels (no channel guide in the room though, and I didn't find a news channel), delicious and varied hot breakfasts, and a fridge in the room. Many of the negatives relate to the bathroom. The sink has no hot water, so I had to shave with cold. Because the shower taps are on the opposite side of the shower door, you have to suffer with a spray of cold water until the water gets hot. It's a tight squeeze getting out of the shower--you have to kind of go out sideways, and I whacked my knee on the toilet paper dispenser once. Also, there's no elevator, although the staff will thankfully help you with your luggage, especially nice if you're on the 3rd floor. I guess that the disadvantages are worth putting up with given the significant advantages this place has for the gay traveler.

Long walk from hotel
For a real treat, Puerto Vallarta has at least two great dining experiences I love: Cafe des Artistes, and the Vista Grille.

Get what you pay for....
Not exactly what I am used to in comfort or style, but remembering that I was in Old Town Mexico...... that thought made it 2% better. They stated that they have updated the hotel, but it has much more needed to make it equal to a 2 Star in the United States. I told the front desk that I did not have hot water in bathroom sink. They quickly responded that it will be fixed. Five days later and after three requests there was still NO hot water in the bathrom sink. If you little creatures (ants) running around the place, this place is for you. Again I mentioned about the ants and they came up to spray the room, but their spray did little to kill the ants but made the room smell like something was done. When I loooked at my pillow and bed and saw hundreds of ants on the bed and pillow, I went down town and found a store that had bug spray and sprayed the room myself. That seemed to work until I left the place. I was there only five days. Also I was told that I had internet in the room, but yet it would not connect until I left the room and went out in the hall towards the pool. It has a good location, but dont go there expecting an updated place. Trust me its old and looks it. The front desk people were always attentive and kind.

Will be back
Staff are very warm, welcoming, and attend to questions/requests promptly. Breakfast is good. One word of caution. If staying in a single room, these are usually located on the first floor which is the same level as the pool/bar. Bar opens at 3 and the music cranks up making a siesta impossible. Rooms on 2nd or 3rd floor are preferred. Plan to stay there on my next visit.

Don't tip cab drivers...its not the custom in Mexico. Only tip if they handle or luggage or do something beyond just drive.

Perfect for a gay vacation
Every time I go to Puerto Vallarta, I stay at this hotel. The staff is exceptional, the breakfast is really good, the king size bed rooms have a small kitchen. You will meet great people during happy hour (2 for 1 drinks from 3 to 6). Mercurio is a gay hotel. Clientele is half couples, half singles. This place is well kept. The wifi is good, with no download limit - good if you want to rent movies from iTunes. You have access to free phone to Canada and USA.
