Great vacation spot--if you're "privileged"

Experience exceeded expectations. We had been to a previous resort further south, near Tulum, which was a step up, but honestly this one was just as good in most respects. Not always as much top-shelf liquor and the restaurants weren't *quite* as good, but still very good food and excellent at times, with beautiful grounds and lots of pools. Great beach too with snorkel opportunities right there. We did the "privileged" suite, mainly just to have a separate room for baby sleeping, but came to find that it had lots of extra perks with that status--had we NOT done that privileged status, I think we would have been rather annoyed at the extra things we would have had to pay for/ask for etc. So I doubt I'd recommend it nearly as highly without the "privileged" status.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

a: The Dolphin Discovery is a short walk away, and you can just go see the dolphins in the water without paying to swim with them (the concierge told us differently). b: If you want to golf, the 9-hole course that is a short walk away is quite lovely, and contrary to what the guys below the lobby area will tell you, it is a full par-36 course (not just a par-3 short course, as they tried to tell me in order to get me to play a more expensive course). Only 9 holes but you can play them as many times as you like!

Catalonia Riviera Maya

The room was average. We asked for non-smoking room, but got a smoking room instead with crack tiles, stained mirror, and smoke stained table stand. We were a little disappointed, but the room was always kept super clean. Staff members were super nice, extremely hard working, and energetic. Night life was amazing! Overall, I had a pleasant and relaxing experience and enjoyed the pool, beach, and food. I would definitely go back.

Not Good!!

We're a family of 4 ( 2 Adults and 2 Children) our trip was on 7-15-2014 to 7-22-2014, this trip was at the last minute also , also our 5th time in the Riviera Maya, we have tried other resorts , and they have been excellent, but Catalonia Riviera Maya, was the worst from the check in, Barbara at the front desk was very impolite, she talked to guests in a bad way, she was disrespectful to a Mexican lady that was staying at the resort like a guest, no matter if Mexican or not. The Beach was very rocky, if you're a beach person, don't go to this Resort, the food was ok. Beware if you're staying in the first floor, there is SO MUCH NOISE, any time. Be carefull with the Timeshare people, they said that's a Vacation Club, but it's not: it's a Timeshare!!! They offer you a thousand of things, but, they're liars. I'm trying to advise you about it. The Riviera Maya has a lot good Resorts for the same price. The beach bar has better drinks! They show it to me like its a 4 star, it's not!! I give this hotel 2 and a half stars. I hope this review helps other people to save money and to stay in another resort. Thank you!

Relaxing Stay

Really like the resort. Very relaxing. Would have like more of a typical beach to stay at. This one was sloped and rocky which made it tough to enjoy. Other then that nice place to stay. Probably would pick another place to vacation to next time. 1 hour drive from Cancun so be prepared.

Great trip for family with young kids

I stayed in the privileged suite with my wife and 17 month old son. The room was perfect for us because we had a separate living room and bedroom (perfect for naps). Our son loved the beach, kids' pools, and food (every restaurant offered a kids menu). Staff was great with us! The only recommendations would be to get the privilaged rooms, get to the restaurants right at 6, and bring water shoes (2 of the 3 beaches were rocky). Everything was great! We would definitely go back again

Great bang for your buck!

I have to admit that I was not thrilled about this resort per the location and prior reviews. Then when I arrived, I also was not thrilled at first glance. I have conducted many all inclusive trips recently and this was the farthest south I have gone yet. I also was aware of the lack of a white sandy beach. I was wrong. Here is my review in a nut shell. The service was AWESOME! The food was OK. The rooms were clean, ok bed, and decent appeal The placement of rooms, beach, pools, and restaurants were great! Beach was ok but the coral reefs and snorkeling on site was AWESOME! You pay to see this at other resorts. All of this for a great cost. If it was just me and my wife to get away at a romantic resort this would not be the place. But a getaway at a great price.......well this is it.

Resort was OK, but I would not come back

As you first arrive at the Catalonia Riviera Maya, the lobby was rather small, hot (as of lack of ventilation), and did not offer that welcoming feel. Our room was just an ordinary room. I expected a mini fridge and an iron for which none came with. The various buffet restaurants in the resort offered great selection of food items, but each item ran out fast. People had to wait a while for the kitchen to bring out new food. The beach was a disappointment. It was rocky and people can barely walk into the water past your knees. As a tip, you can walk onto the beach from the resort next door. The one left of the Catalonia. We snorkeled there and swam with lots of fish. From the dates we traveled, the Catalonia Riviera Maya was the most economical package among all search results along the Mayan Riviera. Our regret is that we should have paid a little extra per person for a better resort.

Dining tip: In Hotel

In addition to the two buffets in the resort, guests also have the option to dine at several A La Carte restaurants for Japanese, Mexican, Italian, and fine cuts steakhouse. They are ready to serve dinner at 6:00pm daily. They don't take reservations, only first come fist serve. If you get there after 8:00pm, you won't get a table at all. So, get there early if you want to eat at one of those places.

I was very cool with the resort except for the fact that I had to pay extra to use a safe in my room. It is totally ridiculous, the hotel should provide a safe for every room so that customers will have that confidence that their items are safe without having to pay extra for it.

Awesome Vacation!! but theres always room for improvement

I had a great time on vacation. Before I get into the details on the hotel please be advised that the resort is about an HOUR away from the Cancun airport. I didnt realize this until I booked the vacation. While for some people that may not be an issue, but I am still apprehensive about the safety off the resorts in mexico. But nevertheless we were safe. We took a shuttle to and from the airport. it was about $125.00 per person round trip but it was worth the safety. I wouldnt trust a taxi. Anywhoo, once we arrived at the resort we were welcomed with drinks and they took our luggage. Check in was easy. Everyone was very friendly. The food on the resort was ok. I was excited about all inclusive but I felt like I was in college at the cafeteria with the buffet style setting. We had unlimited drinks all day and night but I never got drunk (which never happens). Maybe they dilute the alcohol. The beach was beautiful but please be adviced that the beach is VERY ROCKY!!!! I read a review that said the same thing and I brought water shoes from Walmart for $5.00. My bf did not buy any water shoes in advance and had to pay $40.00 at the resort for his water shoes. Overall, we had an amazing time. I loved snorkling, the hibatchi restaurant was AMAZING, entertainment was exciting, the weather was perfect, jetskiing was fun. I recommend this resort for the price, but in the future I know what things I like and do not like on my vacation. :)

Great Couples Retreat!

What a great value! The location was amazing with a beach and some areas with less rocks so you could actually enjoy the water. There's a small city center about 10 min walk away with multiple bars, restaurants, and stores.
