2nd Honeymoon

Great place, Great location, Great price when I bundled the flight with it, lots of places to eat and shop close, the pool was to die for, we were in it every day. Our trip was the end of January, swam every day, never got cold, even at sunset, well maybe a little if the wind was blowing when we got out, but never in the pool itself. Only complaint would be that the beds are a little hard, but that may be just my preference. Several good restaurants inside the Hotel, front door cab service, whenever you want, they sit right in front of the hotel. We went on several great tours. I didn't want to come home, ha ha ha.

Week in Mazatlan 12/29/13-1/5/2014

The weather was perfect but this hotel is only a 2 star. Could be a 3 star but little things bring it down. Local owner runs this hotel on the cheap. He also owns Luna Palace that is bigger, better, and gets better upkeep as he tries to sell timeshares there (they cruise the Oceana Palace looking for potential customers). What drags the Oceana down: lack of towels(they usually only leave 2 bath towels per room. You have to always ask for washcloths and hand towels every day and you still might not get them). You have to go to to bar in lobby to get ice, bring your own bag, and have your own container in room in which to put ice. You have to get new wifi card every day by 9PM (and sometimes they run out). They sometimes run out of beach towels and you have a card you use to check beach towels in and out. Also no vending machines and small elevators. The new highway from Durango, Mexico has brought lots of families and kids to this hotel. In spite of these small irritants we had a great time as this is not a large hotel (we like small to medium). It has a great beach with very fine sand and the oceanview rooms had nice balconies and great views. The hotel is very close to ocean so we could fall asleep every night hearing the oceans waves roll in. Plenty of convenience stores and inexpensive restaurants close by. This hotel is not fancy or quiet so go elsewhere if that is what you want. If you want very close location to beach, less than 5 minute walk from room to beach, good ocean view rooms with nice balconies (180 degree views), great beach and can put up with the small problems then the Oceana Palace is a good value and you should enjoy it. FYI - The English level of staff at hotel and Mazatlan in general is lower than the other four Mexican beach cities to which we have been.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

For fine dining we had great dinners at El Cid Marina Hotel and El Cid Beach Hotel. Don't miss the Guava Pie with Ice cream. We only tried it because waiter suggested it but it was to die for.

NOT a 3 STAR!!!

Let me start with a positve comment, the BEACH and location ARE AWESOME!! I loved the view from our room. However, I called before we went to make sure we had an ocean view and was told we did. Upon arrival they charged us an extra $150 to get the ocean view/balcony room. We fought the bugs all week, silverfish in the bed and pool, roaches in the bathroom and crickets and sugar ants coming in from outside. We had to ask for a face cloth and fresh towels every day. The bed was a hard flat mattress on a cement slab. I love a hard mattress but this was unbearable!!! Around 3/4 every day the place was overrun with locals. There was not a space in the pool for all the local kids that were in it. Not sure what the arm bands are but I think they allow locals to come in for a fee. I love a good party but this was by far the NOISIEST place I have ever stayed. A couple nights they had a tuba/trumpet band playing on the beach with a DJ in the restaurant. Both BLARING and you couldn't hear either for the noise. The staff was helpful but you will be hard pressed to find someone who speaks good english. Was told by a staff memeber that it is more of a MEXICANs hotel, they don't get lots of americans or canadians. NO ICE, NO ICE buckets, we had to go to local convenience stores to get some. The hotel restaurant was very good food and resonably priced. Again, ordering was a challenge because they don't speak english. There are several restaurants within a short distance of the hotel (you can get there by beach) that had AWESOME food and drinks!!! If you want a bare bones hotel, this is it. I would give it 1/2 a star NOT 3!!!
