April vacay

I'll start with the room: very spacious, NICE walk in shower with lots of room. The only complaint I have with the room was the a/c....not cold at all. We alerted front desk and they came up to fix it but it remained the same temperature,. After talking with other guests, it's the same in all rooms. I've been to other resorts and only one actually had cool airconditioning. One thing that was annoying was the taxi drivers for the hotel..if you were going to town the fee was like $12-$14 US dollars for 2 people. If you stated you were going to the airport it was automatically $26 US dollars for both people. Now the hotel chain probably does not control this but just advice for future travelers. The staff was fantastic... very friendly and helpful. They offered entertainment nightly that we really enjoyed, also they offered a movie night by the pool that was really neat. I probably enjoyed the movie with the big projector even more than the dancers. I would def use this hotel chain again and recommend to others as well. Pool bar tender was always on key, very nice and friendly.

Great Trip With Friends

My stay at the Occidental Grand Hotel in Cozumel was very good. The property is beautiful with mature trees and plantings, which appeared carefully groomed and maintained. The rooms are comfortable but a bit tired. I never got anyone to fix the leaking, running toilet. The pillows are lumpy but I'm fussy. Beautiful, accessible beach. Generally friendly staff. My biggest complaint would be the average food. Not horrible, just average and not enough regional cuisine.

Not What We Expected

Amenities-The amenities were decent. The staff kept the placed very clean. The workout room was okay, just hot and crowded. The bars were great and had a great selection. The pools were nice and there were chairs out everyday on the beach. The food was HORRIBLE. The restaurants are definitely the way to go (not the buffet), but they limit your reservations depending on how many nights your stay. Location-The water was not very pretty. The other side of the island had much more beautiful water. Room cleanliness-The room was clean and they came to clean it everyday. Room comfort-The bed was HORRIBLE. It was hard as a rock, but we did not spend much time in the room. The bathroom was nice, but our shower did not drain well. Staff-The staff was just okay. They were cordial, but there was definitely a language barrier and they weren't huge on customer service. Value-It was a pretty good deal for the price and a great family atmosphere if that's what you want. It is a little bit of walk from the rooms to the beach/pool but that is bc you are surrounded by a jungle pretty much. Very nice if you like the outdoors. We would not go back to this resort.

Entertainment tip: Short drive from hotel

Coconuts was a very fun restaurant/bar to go to outside of the resort. The lighthouse was fun to visit and the beach was nicer down there. Chankanaab was a fun Sea World-like beach park that was nice. We rented scooters and got tickets for several attractions through Occidental which was nice and convenient, but I don't know about saving money.

Charming resort for two

We enjoyed our stay very much! Staff are great! Beach is awesome! Food is fine, not great. You can snorkel right off the beach! It's cozy and the grounds are so pretty! The resort is a little in need of sprucing up...seems that has started with wonderful new showers! Stay away from the sales people that want you to buy into the resort, if you say no they leave you alone. We think the resort is more of a 3 star as opposed to a 4 star resort. If you book knowing that you will be very satisfied! We will go again!

Cozumel Vacation

When we arrived at the hotle we were told that they were overbooked for the night. They blamed it on the website that I had booked with. They moved us next door to another Occidental resort which was ok but not what I expected of a 4 star resort. When we returned the next day I was expecting a warm welcome and a welcome drink. Neither happened. The check in went smoothly but they need to work on making a better first impression. The rest of our stay was good. The place is very clean and the beach was excellent. The bar service was a bit slow. It was also unusual to have the bar open at 10am (which actually meant 10:15-10:20) Overall a nice place but they need to work on customer service.

Mediocre at best!

The resort was ok but I'll never stay there again. I expected it to be much bigger/nicer. Upon arrival the staff attempted to book a time share presentation with us before we were ever shown to our room, which was highly annoying after traveling the majority of the day. The rooms were ok. We booked a room with a king size bed but ended up in a room with 2 double beds. The mattresses were so uncomfortable. Nearly every night during our 4 night stay we heard awful crashing noises outside our room. It was loud enough that others guests, like us, got up to investigate. The food was mediocre at best and I'm not a picky eater. Only once during our stay did we have a waiter take drink orders on the beach. The rest of the time we had to walk to the buffet restaurant to get our own drinks. We were able to book our excursions right at the resort which was convenient. However, some required cash. I used the ATM there & it broke right in the middle of dispensing my cash. It shorted me $100! The resort could do nothing about it bc the ATM was owned by a private company. We called our bank immediately & explained the situation. We are hoping to have it resolved within 10 days. Also, the resort is situated on a swamp! There was a 40 yd wooden bridge you have to cross to get from the resort to the beach. You can only imagine the bug bites...yikes! I will say the staff was very friendly & the beach was nice. Also the resort has its own pier and we were picked up there for our excursions (snorkeling & deep sea fishing). All in all, we had a nice vacation & were able to relax...but will never recommend this resort to anyone!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

We discovered a little bar/restaurant situated on the beach called Alberto's that was a short 5 min walk from our resort. It was AMAZING!!! Had we known about this place sooner, we would have eaten there every night. They only serve what they catch each day. One night we had king crab & the next night we had lobster. Also bananas foster right there on the beach! I could go on & on about how great it was!

Great Relaxing Getaway

Check in was a breeze. It was nice to be taken to an office where all your paperwork was ready for check in. We were told we would have a basket of fruit and a bottle of wine delivered to our room. I had to call the next day to get it delivered. Not sure what happened on that. The refigerator in the room was restocked and that was much appreciated. It's the first place we have ever stayed that somone asked us if the music at the pool area was too loud. The music was nice and not the disco beat. That was saved for night and the disco. It was very pleasant and relaxing. This is also the first place we have ever stayed that had golf umbrellas in the room for our use. That was a very considerate touch being that it rained several times during our week day. There was a variety of food so everyone could find something they liked. We would definitely consider staying at the resort again on another trip and would recommmend it to others. In fact when I was at the bank today, I shared information with a teller who is considering a vacation in MX. Thanks for the great service.

Good place for diving

Great for diving and snorkeling. No intertainment to speak of. Food is average in the buffet, good in the Mexican restaurant and pretty bad in the Los Olivos. No free Internet like in most others. Otherwise it is a good place to stay and relax.

Cozumel July 2012

Traveled as single parent of 2 teenagers (14 and 17), value not good value for teens who did not like the food and do not drink alcohol with limited activities for teens. They did use the kayaks on one day but other than that there wasn't anything on the resort for them to do. Most resorts now have Kids programs however are lacking activities for teens. There was nothing to do at night for my teens and they couldnt even watch TV as the programing and TV were in bad condition. We went off the resort most days to participate in our own planned activities and thus did not really utilize the all inclusive features of this resort very much. The food at night was terrible, there was a theme each nigh for the buffet (which is your ONLY option for food if not utilziing one of your reservations at the alacarte restaurants, which we got 3 of for a week stay). The food seemed to look very much the same no matter what the theme was and the kids did not like the food. When we tried to get them something to eat we were told there isn't anything else or we could order room service. We thought this was a good answer but when we called room service we had a choice of a cheeseburger or ham and cheese sandwhich. Needless to say the kids did not get to eat that night. When I pay this much for an all inclusive resort I want to sit down and be waited on at dinner, not buffet only. I do not like cleaniliness of buffet restaurants, especially at dinner. The beach side restaurant, only open for lunch, had the best buffet, but only open for lunch. Overall the resort is beautiful, rooms average, housekeepng excellent, bar tenders excellent. Food..not so good. I did read the reviews which stated this but did not really understand that you only had one place eat, buffet, every night. not really what I expect from an all inclusive reosrt of this price. Cancun probably better choice for families with teens....
