family vacation

Overall we had a great experience. The resort and rooms were very clean and nice. My only downfall would be very very firm beds, the pools were nice and clean and the whole resort was very clean and well kept. The beach area is very nice and lots of lounge chairs to choose from. the food was very good but mostly the same almost every day with a few different things. The steak restaurant was very good, would recommend that. The staff were very friendly and helpful during our stay. We took the catamarian across to the other island which was very nice shopping and we rented a golf cart to drive around and that was a lot of fun. The day we went was very windy and the ride was very rough, I would recommend for 17.00 taking the ferry and going to the island. You could spend as much time there as youd like. the boat ride included a buffet for lunch and free drinks but id prefer the ferry and you can go back at your leisure, but very nice. Overall it was a very nice vacation

Disappointed Spring Break

Nothing Special

If you are looking to stay at the Riu chains I would suggest staying at the Riu Palace or any other hotel if you're looking for a nicer place to stay. The Riu Caribe is okay for spring breakers just needing a place to sleep but not a place to hang out for spring break either. The staff was not very helpful when we asked questions. The food was very mediocre. We also weren't aware that you could book days ahead for the nicer restaurants at the hotel because it was only mentioned that you need reservations. We only were able to eat the buffets and the pizzeria. The drinks are very weak. It was disappointing that they "request" that you don't swim in the pools after 7:00 and the hot tub isn't even open in the evening. We also were forced to go all the way back to our room to retrieve our beach towels before we could check out, which I found odd because house keeping should be able to take care of that.

If you want to eat the nicer restaurants in the hotel book make the reservations during the allotted time slots they require you to and make it for when you want to eat during your entire stay.

Just OK

All in all this hotel was not terrible. The food was absolutely horrible and most of the staff was less than friendly and not very accommodating. The drinks were watered down and the coffee was disgusting. The one thing we loved were the massages which we had to pay for. The pool was nice but the swim up bar was located in the shade which seemed strategic.

best yet

We have visited Cancun 3 times now, the Riu Caribe was a wonderful place to stay. The staff was more than haapy to deliver any request, the rooms were very clean, only complaint was the bed was hard. No need to fight for lounge chairs by the pool or beach there are plenty, never had a problem. The surf on the beach was calm and easy to swim.

Excellent, for the price.

You get what you pay for and that saying doesn't just exist for no reason. This hotel is an excellent value for the buck. If you are a picky person, this may not be for you and you might want to pay more and go to a Riu Palace.

The malls are higher class and more expensive, but the shop are where you get the deals. Cut the asking price in half and be ready for high pressure negotiating. Stick to your guns and you will get a good deal.

Great value, most of the staff are great, but a couple cons

I was very fond of this hotel. First, it is a GREAT value for the money. The bus line is right across the street, very cheap, and it's only about a 5minute ride to the main strip of shopping and bars/clubs. The staff is fantastic, especially the wait/kitchen staff who work tirelessly. Make sure to tip them! I was disappointed it seemed liked we were the only ones tipping often times. The only two "bad" experiences I had at the hotel where 1) My friend and I tried to get a raft from the beach sports staff, which are supposed to be free. The guy acted kind of "shady" and whistled for another co-worker to come out, who informed us that the water was too choppy, but said he could sell us a $65 yacht trip. Meanwhile, there were two other groups of people out on rafts on the very calm water at this time. The second bad experience I had on the last night. I came here with a friend of mine, and we met a group of girls (also vacationers) who we spent time with on the trip. On the last night, one of them came up to my room for a couple hours. Upon us leaving, the front desk worker at the hotel informed me that I would have to pay nearly $200 for having a non guest up in the room. I thought this was a bit absurd seeing as she stayed from maybe 2a-4a in the morning (I had to leave for the airport at 5am). I argued the point a bit, but finally gave in as I had to quickly pack and get ready to depart after a later than expected night at the clubs. Overall, this hotel is a great value and has a great staff, but two instances with certain staff left a sour taste in my mouth to the point where I may look elsewhere if I decide to return to Cancun.

Fantastic Time With Wife and Daughters in Cancun!

This is my 4th time to Cancun. On this trip, I took my wife, four daughters and niece (ages 18,15,12,7,12) from 12/23/12-12/30/12. The front desk staff was pleasant and helpful. The rooms were clean and relatively comfortable, plumbing and air conditioning worked well. The food was fantastic and did not seem to be the same stuff simply put in a different bowl/plate the next day. Being able to observe the staff cook the meals, at least for me, was a definite plus. The entertainment team was friendly, fun, active, helpful, energetic, enthusiastic, truly devoted to/interested in the guests and very entertaining. The "kids disco" and the "icebreaker" games each night were fun and hilarious, and it was nice to see the staff give out "award certificates" to the guests who participated in the daily beach/pool activities. The beach was spectacular and I was even able to build a few large sand-sculputres (aligator, Lightning McQueen, great white shark), which the staff and guests seemed to appreciate. The snorkeling was great, right near the hotel. The nightly shows were always well done, no let downs on any night. Moreover, we were able to meet wonderful people from all over the world, who seemed to be equally pleased with the accommodations, facilities, staff, food, etc. The only minor issue for me was the size of the beds: to have two adults sleep on a "double" bed was somewhat of a challenge (how about a queen size bed?); but "Dramamine" tablets seemed to make our sleeping arrangements more workable. Finally, for reasons not readily apparent to me, this hotel is noted as a "3 star;" yet, having gone to Cancun many times and stayed at different locations, I would place the Riu Caribe in the "4 star" category. This was our first experience at a Riu, and certainly will not be the last. I clearly recommend this hotel for families traveling with children of all ages -- we were not disappointed whatsoever.

It really helps if you know Spanish. The moment the locals/shop owners, vendors, cab drivers, etc., hear someone speak Spanish, all of the prices become lower on everything!

Great Remodeling Completed

We've stayed at the Riu Caribe several times and always enjoy it. The staff is great. Jeremiah at the door is tremendously helpful with anything you need. Gabi, Tomi, Gerardo and Natalie in the Lobby bar are all great! Benjamin, Celia and Elda in the restaurants are super friendly and helpful. Vincente at the pool bar is the best... The hotel has been remodeled and it's great. New pool area, rooms are remodeled and lobby has been redone. There is a new quiet pool where the outdoor theater was.. it's nice! The other pool area wasn't nearly as loud as before... not a lot of drunks which is nice. The entertainment / activities are so - so. A lot of the same routines & acts we've seen for years. The food is not gourmet, which pleases us, but it's good and there's a good variety. The rooms are bright and comfortable. The entire hotel is immaculate... The housekeeping staff does a wonderful job.
