Cure For The Mid Winter Blues

Avalon Baccara, nice quiet, clean no frills traditional styled hotel. The good: really nice beach, no crowds, convenient location. Room 301 needs reconditioning, older furnishings and A/C that didn't blow cold. Room 303 is much nicer with new furnishings but no hot tub. Room 403 is awesome in almost every aspect, 2 and 1/2 baths, panoramic views, both beach and lagoon balconies with 4 person hot tub. Only complaint is overly firm smallish full sized bed... The bad: no elevator, hotel staff not really going out of their way for guests, no access to ice machine by guests. Overall, Avalon Baccara is the kind of Hotel those who can fend for themselves will find appealing (we took the R1 bus to Walmart for food/ beer/supplies#. Good value, with a secluded feel. Already looking forward to going back next year. Oh yeah, the food at Tancun #street side restaurant below hotel) is top notch. Traditional Mexican fare, at very reasonable prices; good stiff drinks too. Tell Gustavo that Eduardo from the U.S. sent you.

Great Location....needs improvement!

Well, we had 'upgraded' in order to have a kitchen, which meant the room came with a microwave and a mini-fridge. We had to complain about dirty linens at least 3 times. The staff was very attentive, but the food (except breakfast) was extremely over priced. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. I think that for the price we paid for one of 'higher end' rooms here, we could have stayed at a better hotel in an average room and been more comfortable. Needless to stay, we will not be in a hurry to go back anytime soon.

The Perfect Spot!

The charm and the location of the hotel could not be better. A great stretch of beach right on the Caribbean and beautiful mosaic tile pool, across from the Flamingo Shopping Center and minutes from La Isla and Plaza Kukulcan. The charm of this hotel is that it only has 27 rooms and you are not PACKED IN like some of the other resorts truly a relaxing experience. The Staff is the best. They make you feel right at home! Almost forgot the hotel does not have a elevator it looks like a huge mansion, so if stairs are an issue ask for lower floor.

great slice of life

We needed a layover in Cancun and this little hotel sandwiched between many large and ungainly complexes is a sweet little slice of quietude with the most charming, if not whimsical architecture, psuedo-colonial, but tasteful rooms, fantastic little colorful pool complete with swim up bar, patios....the food was top notch, breakfast included was mexican or american offerings. I wish I knew about this when our kids were little, it felt safe and small and cozy. Very nice staff. The beach is gorgeous, but MIND the undertow signs before you swim!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Even though the hotel food is very good, a short walk north will bring you to the the best little mexican street restaurant you would ever want to eat in....grilled pork, shrimp, chicken, small tacos with shredded goodies, unusual icecream desserts.

Loved this place~

Quiet, charming, loved the family suite! The only negatives for me was there is no gym or fitness activities, and the beds/pillows were not great but they were ok! The hotel itself is just really nice if you like small and quiet! I hope to go back again!

Very very good

To some extent, it is as good as a 5-star hotel that you can enjoy the beach all by yourself, without any crowded people because it is really a cute one. We enjoy our holiday so much

Amazing Hotel!!

The staff at the hotel were great! Juan was always fast and took care of us! Everybody at the hotel were a great help. This was our first time to cancun sobwe were new to the exchange rates and how peso money worked against usd and the staff were very helpful explaining it to us. We had the best room! 403 was a studio room one bedroom 3 bathrooms and a full kitchen! We were very impressed and we love that the hotel had the old time mexican look and feel. The bed on the other hand was hard as a rock. That was the only bad thing about the hotel! If we ever go back to cancun we will defintly be staying at the Avalon again. There was a couple that came in and said that they have been going to the Avalon hotel for 20 years!! So Avalon must be doing something right!! :-)

Worked for the occasion

We booked here based on some fairly charming photos of a hotel that didn't look like a Cancun monstrosity. We only stayed in Cancun due to desire to take a whale shark tour prior to our departure- well worth dealing with Cancun but next time would go to Isla Mujeres and do it all from there. The hotel did maintain this appearance, having more tile and a Mexican feel to it than most places. The pool also has a nice mosaic. The lagoon view room was highly undesirable because the sounds of traffic are heard all night long and the view isn't of much of the lagoon but an ugly shopping center across the street. There are two small taco restaurants on the road besides the hotel that are unassuming but we had a very good meal there at a great price- this was the better part of the stay here. We considered hanging out on the beach the one morning and having some coffee but no one could be found in the restaurant at 8 am other than two guests who seemed to be waiting forever for someone to arrive. There are no coffee shops nearby either so we just left altogether to find some kind of service. The staff was polite but not very useful here.

Nightlife tip: Short drive from hotel

We left for ferry ride to Isla Mujeres for an evening and had dinner, explored and headed back to Cancun late that night. This was well worth it and it's such an easy quick trip.
